This thread is for quick questions. A "quick question" is a question which has a relatively quick, generally factual answer; a question which is not likely to inspire an extended discussion.

e.g.

Quick Question: How tall is an average ten-year-old boy?
Not a Quick Question: Why are Americans obsessed with guns?

Quick Question: Why is ALS sometimes called Lou Gehrig's Disease? Who was Lou Gehrig?
Not a Quick Question: In Alan Dean Foster's Thranx Commonwealth series, is Pip a Mary Sue?

Get the idea?

According to Google, they keep them short through a combination of biting and their day-to-day activities wearing them down.

Yeah, nails and claws grow because they get worn down by regular use. We humans have to cut ours because we don't do anything more intensive with them than scratching ourselves.

Is the meal "fish and chips" a thing in America?

You can get it at some restaurants (under that name even), but it's not really a staple here.

We only call potatoes done that way chips if we're deliberately invoking British cuisine.

You can get fish and fries at Long John Silver's and other places you get fish. But nowhere I've lived here has particularly had much interest in fish.

Yeah, potatoes that are cut up and fried in a fryer are almost always called fries here unless you're eating fish and chips.

Probably because that's a catchier name than fish and fries.

I do appreciate the alteration of fish and fries though. Sometimes.

I live in Ohio and I go out to lunch pretty often with coworkers at bar-type places. The vast majority of them have fish and chips and even call it that.

It's not exactly a staple in American restaurants, but it's not rare, either. You're most likely to find it at, again, bar-type places or seafood restaurants.

That's interesting. Are there shops that sell it as their main meal? Like, sell fish and chips, and maybe burgers or something?

To me and many (most?) other Americans, fish and chips is synonymous with British food. It's as quintessentially British as spaghetti is Italian. I've literally never seen it at any restaurant I've ever eaten. At least not under that name.

Is that a Wocket in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?

That's very interesting! Here (Australia) it's such a staple that it didn't occur to me that other places might not eat it. You go to the beach, or you're having lunch in the park, or you just want something cheap and easy for lunch? Fish and chips. But I never saw it on American TV shows so that's what made me wonder. Now I wonder what foods are common in America but nowhere else, heh.

Long John Silver's is a batter-fried fish fast food chain, but as I said, the fried potatoes they put in the basket are called fries there.

You can get fries with your fish at Red Lobster, but if they call it fish and chips, it's specifically fish done the English way.

I guess the theater with restaurant service calls the dish fish and chips and isn't generally English themed overall, but it's definitely the English style.

I usually get fish and chips at the English-style pub though.

On the west coast, fish and chips is very much a common thing, and we've got a number of places that specialize in it. Practically every restaurant in Seattle that fries things has it on the menu.

I suppose fish & chips is probably more of a west coast thing, isn't it?

Not really. I live in the middle of flyover country and there are easily a dozen places here I can get a basket meal of what a Brit would recognize as fish and chips. As mentioned, Long John Silver's is a nationwide chain and there is —or used to be anyway — another one that was called "Captain D's."

LJS is definitely nationwide. It's part of Yum food groups, a division of Pepsico.
