This thread is for quick questions. A "quick question" is a question which has a relatively quick, generally factual answer; a question which is not likely to inspire an extended discussion.
e.g.
Quick Question: How tall is an average ten-year-old boy?
Not a Quick Question: Why are Americans obsessed with guns?
Quick Question: Why is ALS sometimes called Lou Gehrig's Disease? Who was Lou Gehrig?
Not a Quick Question: In Alan Dean Foster's Thranx Commonwealth series, is Pip a Mary Sue?
Get the idea?

This tread is your best bet.
Why is it when you write material to DVD or CD it's called "Burning"?
Because the data is written to the disc by using a laser to heat material to the point that a chemical change happens in it.
At least, that's how it works with single-write discs. I think what's going on with the ones that can be changed back with the laser doing something different is a bit trickier.
Fresh-eyed movie blogAre there explicitly socialist but anti-communist parties?
Democratic Socialist parties?
Fresh-eyed movie blogDemocratic socialist parties that I know of (such as The Left in Germany) tend to be neutral or unstated towards communism, and they tend to have communist factions within. I don't know if there are parties that are actually anti-communist.
Why did I get a sudden sharp headache after diving deeper than I meant to? Since the pool was 3m deep (deeper than I'm used to), I swum deeper than I meant to and came up for air maybe a bit later than I should've. Then I got a headache. But my friend got me to yawn to pop my ears, and the headache quickly went away.
What happened there?
Everybody's all "Jerry's old and feeble" till they see him run down a skyscraper and hijack a helicopter mid-flight.Pressure changing too fast, it sounds like.
what do you mean I didn't win, I ate more wet t-shirts than anyone elseA metre or two of water is enough to do that? Huh, didn't know that.
Everybody's all "Jerry's old and feeble" till they see him run down a skyscraper and hijack a helicopter mid-flight.Yeah, water pressure a few meters down is quite a bit more than what you have on the surface.
Just think, a few meters down, you have a few meters of water on top of that, which weighs a fair amount.
what do you mean I didn't win, I ate more wet t-shirts than anyone elseThat's very interesting. Thanks!
Everybody's all "Jerry's old and feeble" till they see him run down a skyscraper and hijack a helicopter mid-flight.No problem.
what do you mean I didn't win, I ate more wet t-shirts than anyone else@Trivialis : Nazis, maybe ? They were socialist at least in name (though not much more, AFAIK), and definitely anti-communist.

Worldbuilding is fun, writing is a chore"National Socialist" was deliberately chosen to attract nationalists and socialists, both of which were popular at the time. However, it wasn't at all actually socialist.
Fresh-eyed movie blogYeah. And I think trivialis may have been looking for groups that aren't, yknow, evil.
As far as I know, though, most or all socialist groups are probably just going to be ambivalent, or sympathetic to communism by default, due to the largely shared ideals between the two systems.
"It's so hard to be humble, knowing how great I am."The Moon's gravitational attraction felt on Earth is 3.32e-5 m/s², while the Sun's is 5.90e-3 m/s². Why does the Moon have more influence than the Sun on tides ?
Worldbuilding is fun, writing is a choreWhere do these numbers come from?
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanMy maths.
g = GM/r²
- G = 6.67e-11 is the gravitational constant
- M = 1.99e30 | 7.35e22 is the mass of the Sun | Moon
- r = 1.50e11 | 3.84e8 is the distance from the Earth to the Sun | Moon

Worldbuilding is fun, writing is a choreAh yes. Tidal forces and gravity forces are not exactly the same force - there is a body radius/distance factor. Tidal force decreases with the cube of the distance, not the square.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanOk, I got it. It's not the magnitude of the gravitational attraction that matters, it's the gradient. The gravitational attraction from the Moon on the near side of the Earth is 7.99e-6 m/s² stronger than it is on the far side ; for the Sun, this difference is only 1.06e-6 m/s².
Perhaps it is what you were trying to say ? I don't think I understood your post.
Worldbuilding is fun, writing is a choreAye, this radius/distance factor is because of the gradient. It is much smaller for the Sun because it is farther away.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanJust curious, is his question more relevant for the Math thread or the Space thread?
Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus. It's physics, not math, but there don't seem to be a physics thread. So, I'd say space thread.
Ah, I was only looking for results in Yack Fest. Didn't think of OTC.

Does anyone here use f.lux on their computer? It looks like something I could benefit from, but I don't want to go installing random shit for obvious reasons. Or do we have a tech thread somewhere I could ask in?
