A bump, but not without cause. The entirety of Yuki-chan has now been translated. The last volume is set to be released sometime later this year in North America, as will volume 11 of the Haruhi-chan manga.

In other related news The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya is also being re-released on Blu Ray sometime soon, so that if you want to buy it but didn't get a chance to the first time you don't have to pay like $500.00 USD for the privilege.

You've never heard of Disappearance before? It's really good; I recommend watching it immediately, before someone spoils you on anything.

Too late, this trailer is too breathtaking not to foist upon some stranger on the internet:

I don't know why they chose Gymnopedies but this absolutely got me started on looking up and researching more classical music.

Hey, I'm a newbie who just watched the dub of the first episode of Melancholy as my introduction to the series proper and I could use some help.

My issue is that I didn't enjoy the first episode and didn't feel hooked enough to continue watching.

My solution to that issue is to share why I felt so displeased and ask the show's fans (i.e. ya'll) why they stuck around, what they enjoy about it, what they wish was different, and maybe just hear them gush about it and see if I feel encouraged to give it another shot.

Now, let's see...

     My Thoughts
  • I found Kyon a working, if slightly bland protagonist. I appreciated him taking the initiative and actually driving the plot by attempting conversation with the other characters, even when they're failing to reciprocate in the slightest, as opposed to being the victim of the plot.

  • Haruhi quickly became The Scrappy for me. She is so rude and sociopathic that scenes involving her her frequently put a bad taste in my mouth. While her Cloud Cuckoolander thoughts were interesting to listen to, that quick, "Nobody asked for your opinion!" really killed the mood. I'm also turned off by her physically abusive and domineering behavior directed at Kyon, the one person that hasn't been avoiding her like the plague, and her sexual assault of poor Mikuru.

  • Mikuru managed to achieve the desired effect rather quickly, but that was quickly shattered when Haruhi decided to engage in some Lampshade Hanging of the Moe archetype and groped her to demonstrate her breast-size, which I didn't even notice up until then because I was too busy feeling sorry for her. I'm not pleased with the writers for pulling me out of the story when I just got invested by reminding me they exist, she doesn't, and they likely added her to the story because 'The chart says...'

  • Yuki got a slight chuckle out of me (which makes her the funniest character I've seen in the show yet, which ain't good), mostly because all the characters started to remind me of a bad RP group. Haruhi kills her conversations and acts creepy and self-entitled, Yuki is given free reign to say whatever she wants and provide details and depth to her character and winds up sitting in a corner, being as colorful as the unpainted sandwiches at the Krabby O'Mondays, and Kyon is the group's Oscar, the only good roleplayer who doesn't feel the need to be superhuman in order to be interesting and is desperately trying to play along with the others but finds himself frustrated when they give him nothing to work with.

  • The editing feels jumpy and weird. It's slightly disorienting. That's all I have to say about that.

     The Survey
1. What's the main appeal of the show?

2. What most frequently turns people away?

3. Are any of my complaints common?

4. Is the first episode notoriously bad and the series Grows the Beard? If so, about when does it hit its stride?

5. When were you sold on the series?

Thanks for helping me out.

5. When were you sold on the series?

  • For me back when I first watched it - it was pretty unique. Part of the appeal is just the series of memes derived from its existence. The seeming deconstruction of anime tropes through Mikuru, Koizumi, and Nagato might be another part of the appeal. It's not some grand, intellectual deconstruction of the concept that makes you feel all depressed and junk, but it's engaging.
  • Haruhi being a Jerkass. I think our 2017 mindsets have generally programmed us to think any and all sexual or social aggression being Played for Laughs stoops into Dude, Not Funny!. Haruhi had quite a bit of that - Haruhi molests Mikuru as a Running Gag. I used to relate to this character when I was younger, but in hindsight, there's no way I'd ever want someone like Haruhi in my life.
  • Kyon's supposed to be kind of bland. He strives to be normal. It's the thematic opposite of Haruhi's I Just Want to Be Special.
  • I'm not sure if you watched the "mock student film" episode or the actual first episode. If it was the former then you're watching the nonlinear "Kyon" order to the show which, imo, makes the show more interesting. If not, the first episode just didn't grab you.
  • Koizumi revealing his solipsistic views in Episode 2 or 3, I think, is when I really started getting into the show.

Haruhi can be divisive.

I didn't think we see anything cool until episode 5. Three episode rule at least.

The Disappearance movie is said to be the ultimate culmination of Yuki and Kyon character moments.

The spin offs are pretty fantastic like The Vanishing of Nagato Yuki-chan which is Yuki-focused and Haruhi-chan which is just takes the series to comedy on the insanity plane. Nyoron Churuya-san is.... A thing.

There was never a monster. And even if there was, it would have disappeared once Haruhi realized there had never been a murder.

Nagato had to go and fix the things that Haruhi altered during the film production. I don't remember how many things she altered, but I don't recall them going away on their own once Haruhi stopped thinking about them or moved onto something else.

She's capable of altering things on the fly - Mikuru's laser beam.

Kyon and Itsuki's concern at the end of the episode implies, or at least leaves the possibility that Haruhi did see some kind of monster ambiguous. Kyon writes it off but he looks unsure, and he typically writes off a lot of stuff, so I'm inclined to believe they left it ambiguous for a reason.

The novels mention that things related to the movie returned to normal after they added a disclaimer that it was all fiction to the movie and that carries over to the anime as well.

Yeah, that was the crux of the plot in the novels: the things Haruhi conjured up for the movie weren't going away and they needed some way to reverse the changes.

Forcing Haruhi to acknowledge that the movie was fictional with that disclaimer was what did the trick.

No new novels, I assume.

I suspect the author is blocked because he wants a Yuki/Kyon ship but can't figure out how to end the Haruhi/Kyon ship realistically.

Or without pissing Haruhi off and ending the universe.

What MBTI types do you think the characters are?

One that is fairly clear to me is Ryoko's type: ENFJ (extraverted-intuitive-feeling-judger). Her cognitive functions are:

Extraverted Feeling (Fe): Her dominant/leading function. She attempts to build social harmony, and to make everyone feel included and supported. Even when she was trying to kill Kyon, she tried to comfort him by getting him to accept her reasons for killing him. (Being a humanoid interface, she doesn't think of death like normal humans, for her death is more like being put in time-out. Because of that, she probably thought Kyon was overreacting.) She is otherwise highly attentive to the social and emotional environment, and also frequently makes moral judgments about what people should do and how they should act (like how she criticized the SOS Brigade for the bunny girl incident, that if things aren't progressing then people in the field should be able to decide things on their own, and that if Kyon wants to start a relationship with Yuki he should take it seriously (in Disappearance)).

Introverted Intuition (Ni): Her auxiliary function. She has a sense of where things are going in the future, and she looks at her actions through general principles like, "It's better to regret something you did, then something you didn't do." She also tries to look at the deeper meaning and implications of things, like why Kyon thought she was joking when she tried to knife him, or when he freaked out at the sight of her (in Disappearance).

Extraverted Sensing (Se): Her tertiary function. She is often eager to make results to happen in the present (desire for immediate and concrete feedback from the environment), and can often be quite forceful in that regard. And not just with the whole kill Kyon thing, but also when she attempts to push Kyon into giving information on Haruhi to her and getting Haruhi to respond to her. Her use of this function is somewhat unhealthy, which I'll explain below.

Introverted Thinking (Ti): Her inferior/weakest function. She is somewhat weak on the implementation details of her plans, and could have killed Kyon had she not spent so much time trying to talk to him. She also had flaws in her data jurisdiction programs which allowed Yuki to gain access to her space. This shows she lacks a complete framework for how to accomplish these things.

Some other suggestions of her being ENFJ, are how she can use her Fe ability to read the social and emotional atmosphere to become a chameleon (for good or ill). Common was the way she used it to build an idealized image that was popular with everyone (except Haruhi, who seemed able to see through her on a subconscious level):

http://mbti-notes.tumblr.com/post/165628524777/how-can-an-enfj-make-more-friends-i-get-along

And for her using Se unhealthily, she let it gain the upper hand which impacted her judgment, which is common in ENFJ (and ENTJ). She got caught in an "Se loop":

>Se loop means that you are impulsive and compulsively respond to every little thing that happens to you, but in such a way that the reaction is completely out of proportion with the original stimulus because you have blown it up to be bigger than it really is (i.e. unable to use the lower function properly). Unconsciously, you have excessively rigid Ni expectations that reality should be a certain way, and when it inevitably isn’t, Se overreacts in a lame attempt to force things.

http://mbti-notes.tumblr.com/post/172669422772/hi-im-an-enfj-im-sorry-if-this-is-a-common

So that's my typing for Ryoko Asakura (ENFJ). Has anyone else done any typing?

I've no psychological experience. I just wanted to post this:

The direction in this movie is absolutely incredible, with this scene as one of the greatest examples of that. The slight movements and reactions of the characters, the dulled colors with Haruhi's ribbon as the highlight of the introduction of the scene, to then be brought back to normal colors represented by Kyon's decision to act, the amazing choice and use of music, the stupendous acting in both the Japanese and English dubs... It all culminates to a breathtaking scene that truly emphasizes it's importance in the entire series. It's a scene that is closest to perfection as you will ever see.
