If Oscar Wilde had lived in our time, he would be a /b/tard.

Actually, scratch that. He does, and goes by Jethro Q Walrustitty.

[up][up] But I'm not going to have any multicolored kids! If I had a UR one, then I'd have to have nine more to account for all the other Guilds! And I'm sorry but I'm just not down for raising 21 kids (give or take one that might be a dog).

So in Ages of Wonders 1(and the other wonder games too) there's a monster called a Beholder, which as I understand is a dungeons and dragons creation...how they avoided legal trouble is mystery to me.

Proof,as it were

I don't think Wizards of the Coast actually hold exclusive copyright over Beholders.

Just Illithids/Mind Flayers.

Given how Beholders were their original creation,I'm surprised they are not included.

Beholders are part of the Open Game License, IIRC.

Nope.

"The beholder is considered "Product Identity" by Wizards of the Coast and as such is not released under its Open Game License.[1]

I remember one of my first internet memberships, Sploder! Ah, the memories... I could probably write a trope list right now! (For reference, I left around 2012 or '13)

  • Scunthorpe Problem: Up To Eleven. The auto-censor (which replaced with "splode", by the way), not only ignored swears being hidden inside words (as per the trope), but also censored things such as "gay", "stupid", and "loser" (not even caring that an important gameplay mechanic is called a "closer"). It could be easily fooled by an extra vowel, self-censoring or an inner space.
  • Hmm.. actually.. that's pretty much the only trope I can summon for the site itself. Has anyone else seen that site?

I think there's other stuff besides Beholders and Illithids that WOTC hold copyright over. Githyanki and githzerai, for example.

I always find it interesting what unique, classic DND monsters aren't under copyright. Like owlbears and gelatinous cubes.

I heard of Owlbears as part of the Cryptid culture long before I saw them come up in games.

My AP Chem class, in the wake of totally failing the test, decided to schedule a school trip to the local zoo...

Why would a chem class take a field trip to the zoo? To learn the chemical composition of animal droppings?
