Picture is Misleading and Unclear: One Winged Angel

I'll admit that for the longest time, I had no idea what One-Winged Angel was about. I mean the trope name evokes a sense that it'd be some kind of sympathetic Broken Angel with one wing, but then the picture seems completely contradictory since the trope is called One Winged and the character has in fact Seven of them. It wasn't until later that I finally found out that the character was actually Sephiroth and the trope had nothing to do with Wings at all but instead the Big Bad turning into some kind of Super Monster. Hell, even the trope caption "There's more than one wing..." even Lampshades that the picture is completely misleading.

I understand that Sephiroth was the Trope Namer or Codifier in this sense, but seriously couldn't we use one that's a bit more descriptive? I don't really have a problem with the current picture, as long we could put a picture of Regular Sephiroth next to it for comparison, but the picture alone is completely misleading and does not seem to describe the "transformation" aspect of One-Winged Angel. Either that or maybe use a picture of a Big Bad transformation that doesn't really have wings, so that there's no confusion between the [Trope Name] and what it actually means.

Yeah, this trope really needs some sort of "before and after" type image, otherwise it just looks like it's showing a monster rather than a transformation.

For me, it's not even that. The [Trope Name] and the Trope Picture just seems to give the impression that it's some kind of sad or Broken Angel.

I suggest we put Ganondorf from The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time in the left half of the picture, and then his Ganon transformation from the same game in the right half, with the accompanying text being: "Big Bad(right). Monster Transformation(left)" or something along those lines. Since that particular sequence is the "cleanest" straight version of the trope that's widely known, even mainstream in fact.

I'd rather use the Ocarina of Time version, then the Twilight Princess version since you fight the non-OWA form after the OWA form in TP.

Unfortunately, given that the Trope Namer is Final Fantasy VII, the image is from Final Fantasy VII (or rather, the artwork for it) and it's a Trope of Legend, I think you won't find much support for this image replacement.

If we're stuck with FFVII, though, it might be a good idea to at least do a comparison pic of what Sephiroth looks like normally and his iconic seven-winged form.

This topic is making me wonder if the trope needs to be renamed. Even on the trope namer, the trope's name is misleading: His actual monster form has many wings, and in later games where he actually has one wing, it's not the trope.

Would these work? Ganondorf: Before and After.

I'm not sure how to edit them together while making it look good. An idea for the caption could be something like "The Big Bad got Bigger".

That doesn't mean bad images get to stay. It just means good established images are preferred.

Plus since the trope is before and after, just use a two part picture.

I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid.

Do we have a picture of Sephiroth's Transformation Sequence? If we did, that would make it slightly more clear (although the name is still misleading).

^There is no transformation sequence, it just fades to black after you defeat Bizarro Sephiroth, then fades back to Seraph Sephiroth.

Im thinkin a simple name change will fix this right up. Sephy is pretty well known and fits the trope to a glove so lets just make the name a little more obvious just call it something simple lik e "Final Form"

Such is the problem with this site with each passing day.

More and more inbound links through Google are added each day, making it more and more difficult to rename any long-standing titles, no matter how horrible the name is.

Forget renaming it and just add to our current pic for clarity. Normal Sepiroth + current pic= a fair visual representation of the trope.

Yeah, this is something that definitely needs a before/after to fully explain it.

A couple suggestions, from Tales Of Phantasia- [1] [2]

Or, if we want to stick with Sephiroth... [3]

A before-after of Sephiroth would be the safest bet, since he's the trope namer and it's a Trope of Legend, but nothing's saying we can't have an Image Links page for all the other final bosses who turn into monsters.

Either the first Tales pic, or the before/after of Sephiroth. Actually, one of the "before" pics of Sephiroth that actually has him with that one wing on his back might work a tad better.

^agreed. Since Sephiroth is the Trope Namer, stick with him and just use the Before/After image.

Since no other images of Sephiroth have been suggested, how about this image of Bowser to Giga Bowser?

[up] If you aren't familiar with what Bowser "normally" looks like it might not be obvious that he is all badass crazy in the bottom panel.

I dunno, I like the Sephiroth pic. Myopic? And how!

I'm partial to using Sephiroth as well, him being the Trope Namer after all, but the problem is is that from the images of him suggested so far they do an even worse job of detailing the transformation than Bowser to Giga Bowser does.

Perhaps a screencap of the exact One-Winged Angel transformation of Sephiroth would be clearer but as it stands, the image is still unclear.
