Having watched War Dogs, is the military-industrial these days a vulture fight waiting to happen?
The Marines will be adopting the Modular Handgun System starting next year. [1]
They should have sent a poet.Ok someone phone Satan and check the temperature at the gates. First they are working to try and replace the M-16 and now have finally selected a new handgun.
Who watches the watchmen? What are the odds of Navy and Air Force picking up the MHS next?
I heard a few reports of less than stellar reliability but pretty much anything would be an upgrade over the M9.
They should have sent a poet.Looks like Ottawa announced the deployment of Canadian soldiers into Mali for the first time since the 90s.
I've heard the P320 it's based on has issues with getting dropped real hard because it uses an iffy striker system but the M17/18 are real beefed up and don't have the same problem.
Oh really when? The drop risk was overblown in general given it has to be dropped at just the right angle. While that sort of thing should be accounted for and where possible adjusted for it is hardly damning. The M-16's floating firing pin means you can't carry the M-16 with a round in chamber regardless of selector lever setting.
Who watches the watchmen?A floating firing pin does indeed carry the slim risk of a drop-fire. But then again, I can't think of any modern military weapon that doesn't have a floating firing pin.
I've heard of some SKS rifles being modified (by civilian shooters) to use a spring-loaded inertia-type firing pin, but that's about it.
This Space Intentionally Left Blank.I thought MHS was a joint Army / Air Force program to start with.
"Yup. That tasted purple."pwiegle: It wasn't a slim risk but a common source of negligent discharges. Which is why the most common ordered carry of the M-16 on sentry duty is condition 3. You were only authorized to chamber a round if you were about to need it. Condition 1 carry for sentry duty not in forward deployed areas with immediate risk as part of the sentries duties such as at check points for example, was almost never authorized. "Outside the Wire" is obviously a whole other situation.
Who watches the watchmen?Plus the whole utility of the Dramatic Gun Cock in the escalation of force ladder.
"Yup. That tasted purple."It was, but I don't think the Air Force decided to buy it. They had been angling for the Glock from the beginning, and I guess ended up being unsatisfied with the Sig offering.

Russian Military Expert: Moscow Must Focus on Defending Itself Against Hybrid Wars
Kind of strange that people don't know that Gerasimov (creator of the term) when writing his article on "hybrid war" was actually talking about the Russian perspective on United States doctrine.

Si Vis Pacem, Para PerkeleFirst For Finland: USS Abraham Lincoln Welcomes Partner Nation Pilot
Capt. Juha "Stallion" Järvinen preformed an arrested landing on the Nimitz-Class aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) and is currently attached to Marine Fighter Attack Training Squadron (VMFAT) 101 to become qualified as a pilot instructor.
Those silly Russians.
AFP: The US though isn't exactly rushing into it and has several decades of experience. I would be leery of Chinese equipment. Not saying it is bad or incapable but I don't think it is as dangerous as it is sold to be.

Who watches the watchmen?
I agree that Chinese equipment still has quite a way to go before catching up with the West. They're getting there, but they're not there just yet.
Don't forget the progress they've made on carrier ops. They're determined, I'll give them that.
They should have sent a poet.
Very much so.
With the shift in focus on expanding into the South China Sea, the subsequent disputes with Vietnam and protecting foreign business interests in Africa, the PLN has received a lot of funding in the past year.

Yah, of course, but then they don't have to be nearly perfect to be very dangerous.
In China's case I would argue at best it is a case by case basis just how dangerous it is.
Who watches the watchmen?
The US Air Force has reported that one of their HH-60 Pave Hawks has gone down in western Iraq with seven airmen aboard.
The Pave Hawks are normally used to transport special forces types or Pararescuemen.
