So, I'm downloading this game. Is there anything I need to know before I start playing this?

It's been 3000 years…

Be prepared to fail several times over at the start. Your dwarves will die, starve, and be murdered. My very first time playing a wood cutters kitten got killed by a goblin thief. He went berserk and hacked my fort of 20 dwarves to death before stripping naked and running around outside until he died of thirst.

You should probably find one of the various tutorials out there to help you learn the game.

It's not going to happen that way this time. Tantrums don't hit anymore unless you do really badly for a very long time. Most likely starvation, or an engineering mishap. Or a werecreature ambushing you when you least expect it.

Dig under ground and hide your dwarves, make sure to start a farm and a brewery. Traps are important.

Don't do an above ground fort unless you're prepared to have the whole thing go wrong because of a single weregecko.

That's why you build up your surface defenses over time, and get a drawbridge set up within the first year. Giving your mason some Mechanic skill with embark points certainly helps with that.

My very first fortress… I remember it was brought to ruin by a forgotten beast of all things, along with that outpost liaison guy that occasionally appears.

Now known as Cibryll.

Mine was a lack of farming. By the time the caravan came we were having tantrums.

This forgotten beast was very aptly named.

In other news, my current fort's world just passed into the age of goblins. I think this happened on Granite 1, after I killed a titan during the preceding year, so it seems likely that my killing the titan brought about this change.

Sweet! I don't know how many recorded age changes we have in this thread. I don't recall very many, if any at all outside of yours.

whelp. suddenly got the urge to play dorf fortress again.

aaaand i embarked on an area with no trees no grass and no vegetation

as a result, 2 sheep, a horse and a camel have starved to death

and they all died on top of a surface- mechanic workshop. i cant seem to get any of my dorfs to actually move the corpses to the corpse/refuse stockpile, or dump em in a designated garbage zone.

In [o]rders you need to enable refuse hauling on the surface. Took me a bit to figure that out.

ive set dwarves to collect refuse from the outside, but they're just not touching the corpses.

You might need to deconstruct the workshop first.

Then I'm not sure what's wrong. Might be a bug?

It still has a few odd bugs with work shops and fetching things from time to time and can lead to weird scenarios like madness and murder because it causes a chain reaction. Of course the other events in the game are all very interesting like being attacked by killer bots, raiders, slavers, savage cannibals, angry exploding rodents and antelope, psychic storms etc.

Honestly it is pretty fun.

Oh goody. That's better than I feared. I thought you were about to lay down a Towns-level calamity on me. "Oh Armok, no, don't buy it!" type stuff. I can handle "Fun, but a bit buggy".

No, it's good. It's like pre-Z level Dwarf Fortress I think. One of my complaints about the game, but they all pretty much revolve around the lack of depth. Which in this case is a style thing I think, because they're more focused on the story of your colony in particular than in changing the entire planet. Hell, it's even got a win condition. Not spoiling what that is, just in case.

oh i figured it out.

the corpses werent going to the refuse pile because the were tagged to a zone i made for all the surface animals. once i removed that they went straight to the refuse pile.
