Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

[up][up] Damn, I didn't know the Simpsons got that dark.

And yes, Rick and Morty is worth seeing.

[tup] Talia and Kakre.

[up] I second that, Rick and Morty is great.

Does Rick and Morty have any CM canidates?

Clown-Face, I saw you requested the fixing of the typos for Maax for the CM page; could you please change it on the YMMV page?

[up][up] Very doubtful, Rick is guilty of sorts of heinious crimes, most played for laughs and many really grand in terms of scale. Not mention Rick loves his family (well except for his son in law Jerry, he doesn't like Jerry).

The only other character I think of is....the jelly bean creature that tried to rape Morty, despite the bizarre circumstances of that scene, I heard it was meant to be serious, not joke. The Jelly Bean creature also seemed to like child porn. But Rick is more heinious.

[up][up][up] Not at this time, I don't think, though Evil Morty might end up qualifying later down the road, depending on the direction they decide to take him in.

Aside from that, I'd say that the closest to an example would be the giant talking jellybean who tries to molest Morty, but he fails the heinous standard for sure.

A giant talking jellybean rapist? That show seems like another one of those that's just too damn weird for anyone to count.
I think I'll submit these tomorrow, and cut Malekith (image is broken).

  • Added Maax's rewrite.
  • Still would prefer Vandal Savage's image on Monster.DC Comics, but if nobody wants to, I'll drop it.

[up][up][up] Yeah, Rick and Morty is a really weird show, and yet there's something about the weirdness that just works. Definatley worth checking out, very unlikely to have a CM candidate.

Anyway kinda covering something else Deadpool related, I'm guessing Mr. Sinister from the Deadpool video game is just a GDV. I watched a couple of walk through video series, he doesn't seem to get much characterization. Does anyone else know about this game and would agree or disagree?

In the game Deadpool seems to be ignoring Sinister's evil plot and the X-Men's attempts to stop him, essentially doing his own thing, Deadpool doesn't want to kill Sinister because Sinister wants to destroy humanity and take over the world, he is mad that Sinister killed a guy he was contracted to kill and wants Sinister to pay him out for his lost contract. So we don't see much of Sinister's evil plot, because Deadpool is not playing attention to it.

Would a character being considered redeemable in-universe be enough to disqualify them?

[up]Yes, a Complete Monster is never viewed in a sympathetic light.

Depends. Sauron was viewed as redeemable, but pointedly rejected all chances at redemption. Same with multiple Star Wars villains

That depends on what (or who) considers them redeemable.

If the story itself presents them as redeemable, then they probably don't count. If it's a character who views them as redeemable, then they probably could, since there are a few examples of a character In-Universe trying to redeem a Complete Monster and failing.

[up][up] It wasn't rejected but the character's arc is still ongoing (though it's a case like Akainu) but it could be years before another appearance. Their last appearance (which happened after they were voted up) however had them still considered possible to be redeemed.

Tomorrow, I am going to be doing my first effort post in a while. It will be on a new Runescape candidate named Nomad who I believe qualifies based on the most recent quest release.

As a forewarning, even though the quest only came out Monday, I see no point in waiting two weeks since I am the only person on the forum who likely plays the game currently and because the quest has steep skill requirements so a new player wouldn't even be able to do it. It will be done tomorrow with no spoiler tags.

To put it bluntly, in the new quest he steals countless souls and twists them into a new Eldritch Abomination God that he plans to use to cleanse the world and recreate it his image. Runescape's nightmare fuel page is going to get a lengthy addition.

As for Amascut, her brother Icthlarin still wants to try and redeem her and begs the player to save her since he still loves his sister. At this point in the story, I think she is way past the point of not return and it likely play out as a Mercy Kill more than a legitimate redemption.
