Glen Quagmire: Likable or not?

Has anyone ever had a specific feeling towards Family Guy's Glen Quagmire? Because, for the most part, i'm pretty sure i don't like him.

The fact that he's a sexist pervert is a gimme, but the fact that he calls Brian out for constantly hitting on Lois when he himself has tried that dozens of times, that just makes me dislike him. And what happened in "Brian's a bad father", that just hit a new low.

I know that we should see Quagmire's side of things, seeing as Peter's the one who shot him in remarkably stupid way, but when he said "I'm gonna shoot you like a dirty animal" and "The only thing that matters to me is a bullet in your arm", that just struck me as cold-hearted.

I'm pretty sure that whole thing was the joke. They took the cliched plot of someone doing something to someone else and them getting mad at them for it, and when they beg for forgiveness they have to endure the same thing they did to the person (optional: making them stop right before it's done since it's "clear they would've done it no matter what") and... well, instead of some harmless or disgusting or insulting thing, it was shooting them in the arm. C'mon, it's Family Guy; it relishes in Refuge in Audacity all the time, what did you expect?

I honestly find him to be the absolute worst character on the show now. Ever since his speech to Brian, he's lost a great deal of coolness points to me, and it seemed to snowball from there. His douchebaggery levels only seemed to elevate when he acted all pissy at Brian during that Road to the North Pole thing. His only redeeming moment was taking down that abusive boyfriend. And even though it's pretty much never happened due to timelines and all, his indifference during Brian's funeral will not be forgotten.

I like Quagmire. He's funny and caring, though he is a sick perv.

I'm not sure if I like him if my favorite Quagmire moment is when he slams the window on his penis watching Lois beat up New Yorkers.

I'm mixed on that dude. I mean yeah I get it was a joke but dude sometimes is crazy. If I had to choose between him and the wheel monster (Joe) I'd choose Joe. My favorite character is Brian.

Eh, I thought he was funnier before the Running Gag with Brian, it was Cringe Comedy at it's worst. The only one I liked was 'Tiegs For Two' where they made both of them act more like arrogant rivals to each other, like Stewie and Brian's old feud, though they ironically got rid of the gag after that.

Quagmire, like so many other gags in Family Guy, is one of those characters that works better with the additional whimsy and cartooniness the original episodes had ("Who else but Quagmire?") rather than dumping an unsettling amount of Cerebus Syndrome onto the matter and making it pure shock comedy.

He used to be hilarious. Now he's a complete stick-in-the-mud. I miss the loveable sex maniac he used to be.

I do think that Quagmire's sudden, out of the blue hatred for Brian was used to pander to certain viewers, but I won't get into that now.

Like other gags, the writers ended up overplaying their hands when it came to Quagmire's Take That, Scrappy! treatment to Brian.

Family Guy has this 'LOOK LOOK WE'RE LISTENING TO FANS' approach, Lampshading their complaints for awe appeal...but then not doing a thing to actually fix them. Quagmire isn't the only case of this cheap approach.

@Psi001

Eh, Brian and Stewie as pals are funnier than when they were enemies. Seeing as how they're both two guys have live in the same house they have a grasp on the nature of each other. Stewie acting like a jackass to random people is funnier than directing it at Brian.

To touch on your comment further: smack talk is funny when Brian sometimes acts like he's knows something but doesn't and Stewie blazes him. Their back and forth banter over intelligence is what makes up a bulking load of good dialogue on the show.

[up]Maybe but I thought Quagmire worked better in something of that original dynamic where both he and Brian pompously smack talked each other than the Cringe Comedy dynamic of Brian sniveling at as he offends and enrages Quagmire more and more.

It was kinda funny in almost a Character Development manner, first Brian discovers Quagmire hates him and worms his way only to get shot down. Then Quagmire becomes more gratuitously hateful towards Brian leading him to slowly retaliate and by their last appearance he's equally vindictive towards him. It would have been interesting to see if they took it any further, making a real He Who Fights Monsters dynamic between them (ie. a refined, well meaning but completely pompous side vs a hedonistic but earnest one, I mean if they really wanna go Cerebus Syndrome with it's Crapsack World that's at least an interesting way to go about it).

I think the most telling part about Quagmire shooting Peter back was not only that Quagmire shot him in the brain, but also didn't even appear the slightest bit fazed about it. Guy's a prick.

The only thing that's preventing me from hating Quagmire as much as he hates Brian this episode is the fact that Peter actually shot him and Joe two seasons ago. Peter being Peter has been able to go the end of an episode without being fucked up like someone else is unfair. From the episode "Lottery Fever":

I honestly think Quagmire is a hypocrite. While I do think Brian kind of deserved that Take That, Scrappy! speech he got, Quagmire is just as bad, and if not worse, than Brian. I mean, granted he does have his Pet the Dog moments (relationship with Meg, anyone, it doesn't change the fact that he was flanderized and made angrier each season.

I could say the same about a number of shows. Everybody has different taste.

I can't help but think that if that post referred to any other show (except for Sponge Bob, which is also apparently an Acceptable Target around here), there would be a lot more people calling it out.

I was just about to say something similar. I mean, I'm not that much of a big Family Guy fan, but these types of comments are unnecessary, and it offends people who do like the show.

Agreed full stop. Making comments like that really is pretty insulting to people who do enjoy the show in some form.

I agree that he was funnier before they made him a Brian-hater, as then his character began to develop at last, but in the direction of a hypocritical and self-righteous ass, the inverse of Brian at his worst in season 7 is what they've been trying to make Quagmire into ever since then.

I actually never saw the Brenda episode. At some point i realized i just didn't like the show much and stopped watching it altogether. Same thing happened with Big Bang Theory.

@Pretty Coco

Why people like you come in threads and randomly make comments like that is a mystery to the entire world. Not everyone likes to be apart of the Hive Mind that inanely hate on Family Guy. Family Guy has just many pros as it does cons. If the FG gags weren't memorable or iconic to various populations of people then maybe your remark would have some merit.

Don't post anything like that again or someone will call a mod.

[up]We're all guilty of using generalizations at one point or another note  so yeah it's cool.

Having seen the episode in question, yeah it's them overplaying the Cringe Comedy.
