Vivienne Medrano's works are fairly popular but also quite divisive online, even or especially amongst certain fans. This has caused several edit wars or iffy and complainy entries that have been brought several times to ATT, "Is This An Example?", and several other cleanup threads. Some entries also need fact-checking. I've decided to make this thread to clean up or discuss any misuse or tropes or just misinformation about Viv's shows in general.

Alright, so this was added to YMMV.Helluva Boss S 2 E 1 The Circus

  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: Stella, according to a lot of people. In Season One, people have speculated on the nature of Stolas and Stella's relationship before the affair, with Octavia and Asmodeus implying that they were once happy together (or at least amicable), and considering how she had hardly a few minutes of screetime within season one (and pretty much all of it amounted to her yelling at someone), people were looking forward to seeing what she was like when she wasn't angry. Some were promptly disappointed that Stella turned out to simply be a horrible person who enjoyed tormenting Stolas and treated him like garbage even before the affair. Not only did it contradicted what Octavia said in 'Loo Loo Land', but it removed any complexity from Stolas and Stella's relationship, all but absolving Stolas of cheating on her and the effect it had on his daughter. Additionally, both Stolas and Stella were forced into a marriage they didn't want to have a child neither of them wanted, but the episode plays this like Stolas is the only victim of the situation...because Stella was evil from the moment she was born, shown literally strangling a dog in a childhood photograph. Subtle.

Is it valid?

[up] That might be valid for something (They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot...?), but Wasted a Perfectly Good Character is about someone who is popular but underused, not a previously-underused character getting in to more spotlight and turning out to not be what the fans had hoped.

On YMMV.Hazbin Hotel S 1 E 4 Masquerade, Maybenott deleted this Misaimed Fandom entry:

  • Misaimed Fandom: "Loser, Baby" was criticized by some fans who claimed the song was basically Husk victim-blaming Angel and telling him to just suck it up that he was being financially and physically exploited by his boss. That's not at all the case. "Loser, Baby" is meant to be Husk giving Angel a much needed wake-up call about his situation, telling him in a Tough Love way that he's not alone in being at rock bottom and that isolating himself in his misery will do more harm than good.

With the edit reason: "This is not comparable at all. Husk being an alcoholic is nothing compared to being sexually assaulted for years. They are not both 'losers', their situations are completely incomparable."

Was the entry valid and it should be restored? Or was Maybenott correct and it should stay removed?

I was thinking about adding Too Bleak, Stopped Caring to YMMV.Helluva Boss. There are many complaints about the show's Protagonist-Centered Morality, both the protagonists and antagonists are equally bad (so it does not even work as a Black-and-Gray Morality story, at least that is what I think the creators are trying to go for) with only difference being the former have freudian excuses while the latter is doing it For the Evulz. Side and supporting charcters are the only ones being neither and they can be described as Ambiguously Evil at best.

If anything I've seen the opposite opinion spring up lately — that the character sure are nice and morally-inclined for characters in hell. People seemed to generally favor earlier episodes where the protagonists were all more flawed and unlikable (because it was funnier).

[up]That is another part of it, the narrative itself tries to pretend they are good people, when in reality they are still bad anyway. Blitz not caring about Loona calling Moxie fat, but caring about Mammon doing the same makes him a hypocrite, which is not touched upon at all.

I guess we're just looking at the discourse in different places. The reviews I've seen haven't touched on that sort of thing. At best people dislike Stolas for lacking the moral complexity he was introduced with, while being treated as a victim in his situation. I haven't heard too many of your criticisms.

Should am example from the Hazbin pilot still be in the Web Animation folder in a trope list?

Should Vaggie's entry under Characters.Hazbin Hotel The Hazbin Hotel be spoilers off? There’s a lot of markups regarding a big reveal in the most recent episodes and I feel with one recent entry in particular it just spoils her whole secret. So I wanna see if we can get the green light to unmark all the spoilers on her folder (and her folder ONLY).

[up] It seems we did that already.

Should the misc section in Helluva Boss: Others be split in some other? It appears it's not quite as organized or specific as the rest of the sections.

The fan wiki uses "The Radio Demon".

[up] I really hesitate trusting that wiki. It's been known to be plagued with misinformation. They have doubled down on security and quality control, but I suggest not bringing that site up as a source of info for the Hellaverse.

For now, just keep A Day in the Afterlife

Should the capitalization be Webcomic.A Day In The After Life instead? It looks like the title page spells "After Life" as two words.

(Putting the question of whether that or "The Radio Demon" should be the main page title aside for now, since the other would exist as a redirect anyway)

A hypothetical scenario. Say Lucifer were to appear in a Helluva Boss episode, like say the upcoming "Sinsmas"?

Do we put tropes of him from that episode in his folder on Helluva Boss: Seven Deadly Sins, or place them in his folder on Hazbin Hotel: Hell?

My inclination would be to put his entry on the Hazbin page, with a link to it on the Helluva page, since Lucifer is a prominent character in Hazbin but not Helluva.

I've been here too long. Regretting choosing this screenname ten years ago.
