Old Magnificent Bastard thread

Welcome to the Magnificent Bastard proposal thread! This is the thread where new Magnificent Bastard examples are vetted, approved, and written up. If you're looking for the general cleanup thread (for cuts, rewrites, expansions, and the like), please go here

Important: Before suggesting any new examples, please read the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List; if you have any questions, the odds are high they are answered there. Additionally, please check here for the earliest date a work can be discussed (usually two weeks from the U.S. release date) and whether the work has already been reserved by another user.

Here is how the process works:

    Process

  1. If you have a candidate to propose, you can simply come right in and propose them! If the character's run is brief, such as a single issue of a comic book, then a simple summary of their actions and any potential mitigating features will be enough; for longer-running candidates, an effortpost (EP) might be helpful for organizing the proposal. An EP is not outright required, but please be mindful that if a post becomes too clunky and unorganized, it can be very hard for other people to follow.

  2. After the proposal, there will be a 72-hour discussion and voting period, where people may ask questions and vote on the candidate. The number of upvotes must outnumber the downvotes by at least five for the character to be considered "approved".

  3. Three days after the proposal has been made, if the character has been approved, you may post the writeup (the text to be posted on the trope page itself) on the thread and send it to the drafts page. Your candidate will soon be added to the MB subpage. If the work has a page, you should add your candidate to the relevant YMMV page. Voila! It's that simple!

Outside of this process, we do have a few ground rules:

    Ground Rules

  1. To keep the thread moving at a reasonable pace, there are some restrictions on when a proposal can be made. There should only be a maximum of four EPs posted both per page and per hour to ensure that nothing gets lost in the shuffle; additionally, each individual troper should only be proposing or writing up characters from a maximum of three works at a time (from initial proposals to end of their voting period). If your proposal would fall outside of either of these guidelines, we'd like to ask you to please wait until they would fit within; feel free to type them up on an outside document, and then when the time comes, you can just copy, paste, and post!

  2. No plagiarism of any kind. This is a very serious matter site-wide, as the website could get in actual legal trouble over this; as a result, this can very quickly lead to mod intervention. This can take many different forms:
    1. Direct plagiarism, i.e. wholesale copying. This is not only the easiest to find, but is also the most likely to warrant quick moderator intervention. To be clear, quoting in some places is perfectly acceptable, but it has to be very clear you're quoting from something else and it cannot be anything longer than a sentence or two - if you're quoting an entire work summary from Wikipedia, no one is going to believe you've actually consumed the work, so even if you cite your source, your candidate will be downvoted anyway.
    2. Self-plagiarism. Even if you can prove that you wrote the same text in both places, the site itself can't contain any of the duplicated text. If you already wrote something once before, it's not too hard to write it a second time.
    3. Using another site's work as a template for a proposal. Just because you don't copy and paste something directly doesn't mean it's any harder to detect if you're basing parts or all of your proposal on text someone else wrote. To be clear, this doesn't violate site rules and won't lead to mod intervention, but just like if you directly plagiarize, no one will believe you've consumed the work if you're clearly basing your proposal on something else. This thread largely operates on the honor system, and tweaking someone else's work to pass it off as your own is one of the fastest ways to lose trust.

  3. Votes must be for specific candidates, meaning no blanket voting (i.e. "yes to everyone I missed").

  4. If you are the first person to downvote a candidate, please provide an explanation of why when you do so. We're here for discussions above all, and a hit-and-run downvote doesn't facilitate anything.

  5. If a work is already reserved by another user, please don't comment on the work or any potential characters worth discussion before the discussion date. We know how exciting it is when a work has a keeper that you're waiting to talk about, but it's not fair to the person who reserved the work who is just as excited to lead the discussion to see the discussion getting spoiled before they get to do it. On the other hand, if the reservation only has one name attached, shoot them a PM - they may be down for a collaboration, which will get you in on the fun as well!

  6. Please keep the thread on-topic. While discussing the trope is fun and we encourage people to enjoy it, questions like "who's your favorite MB" are off-topic and can lead to thumps. That's the kind of question to take to people's PMs if they're willing. Similarly, while we encourage friendliness and familiarity with other users, posts should always have some kind of thread-relevant purpose; for instance, if you want to wish someone a happy birthday, feel free to, but if it's the only thing in the post, it's off-topic and needs something else alongside it. Again, though, while we strive for a friendly atmosphere, this is not Facebook; life updates are fun, but unless they have some kind of impact on your thread participation, please do not bring it here - we have Yack Fest for that.

  7. Please refrain from asking anything along the lines of "How Did We Miss This One?" In almost every case, the answer is simply "No one thought about it before". This Is a Wiki where everyone has different interests, and the fact that people missed a particular candidate, even one that seems like a textbook example of a trope or a character who is particularly iconic in pop culture, means absolutely nothing. The question is disruptive, has a simple and consistent answer, and provides nothing to any discussion.

  8. If you are suspended from other parts of the website, it is still possible to participate!
    1. For users who are suspended from editing the wiki, you still have full access to this thread. You can propose candidates and write them up with no issues whatsoever; while you will have to ask someone else to post the entry to the relevant pages once it is done, all write-ups are considered thread-approved - as in, done by consensus - and thus doing so does not violate any rules regarding meatpuppeting.
    2. If you are suspended from the forums, your participation is limited but not impossible. It is still possible for a forum-suspended user to assist in creating the write-up for a character who has already been approved; as previously mentioned, write-ups are inherently considered a consensus-based edit and thus not tied to any one particular user. However, you can not assist in the proposal of a character; as a proposal is based around the forum rather than the wiki, doing so with a forum suspension qualifies as meatpuppeting.

  9. Please keep all discussions "in-house".
    1. What other wikis use for MB equivalents is irrelevant here.
    2. Please be wary of using other wikis, Fandom or otherwise, as sources of information. They are just as fallible as a site like Wikipedia in regards to accuracy because they can be edited by any user, just as this site can.
    3. Do not attempt to force a communication with an author in an attempt to gather evidence or settle a debate; besides the fact that this is a YMMV trope and thus author intent has variable weight depending on the circumstance, doing so may cross the line into drama exportation, which is prohibited site-wide.

If you would like to use an EP for your candidate, here's the general format. This format does not have to be followed exactly, but these are the main topics that need to be covered:

    Effortpost Template

What is the work?

This is a brief summary of the work you're going to discuss. We don't need a full plot summary here, just however much we need to understand going into the discussion — it can even be as simple as quoting the summary on the work's page.

Who is the candidate and what have they done?

This is essentially the character's biography — who they are, their story, their goals and methodology, and, preferably (though not required), what happens to the candidate at the end. It does not have to include every single thing they ever do — for some characters, we'd be here all day if that was the case — but it should include the highlights of their journey.

How are they Magnificent?

This is the point where you highlight the character's brilliance. How to they convey their intelligence and charm to the audience? What makes them stand out among the crowd? What are their goals and how do they go about accomplishing them? This part welcomes a lot of creative thinking — not everyone has to be a Machiavellian Diabolical Mastermind to be worth considering here! This is also the time to showcase how the character can think on their feet if it's necessary.

How are they a Bastard? How are they not too bad?

What kinds of moral lines is this character willing to cross for the sake of their goal? Are they willing to let innocents die? Start wars? Commit crimes? The character has to show some kind of unscrupulousness in order to count as a "Bastard". Notably, this character does not necessarily have to be the villain, and an Anti-Hero can cross the line if they're immoral enough, but they have to be immoral somehow.

This is also the section where you then state your case for why they're not too bad. Perhaps their good intentions help mitigate their crimes. Perhaps others are shown to be much worse than them. Perhaps they're prone to Pet the Dog moments or are even fighting on behalf of loved ones. Whatever the case, there are certain lines that an MB can't cross, but as long as their villainy is reasonable for their goal, they can be considered.

Final verdict?

This is where you post your final conclusion on the character in question. You can continue elaborating on your reasons or even just say a simple "yes" or "no"; at this point, we've heard everything we need to hear.

And that's everything you need to know. Welcome to the thread!

Here's the (albeit belated) writeup for Labyrinth Henry! Sorry it took a bit lmao.

  • CG5:
    • Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria Simulator song: "Labyrinth: Henry Emily similar to his original counterpart, was one of the founders of Fazbear Entertainment. Seeking to bring everything to an end once and for all, he designs an inescapable laybrinth disguised as a Freddy Fazbear's establishment, he hires an unsuspecting volunteer to lure in William Afton, his daughter Elizabeth, and the other unrested souls to the establishment. Using the sounds of crying children to keep them occupied, he sets the entire building ablaze, putting an end to every remaining face of Fazbear's, bringing the story to an end once and for all. A Well-Intentioned Extremist fully willing to put others in harms way to get the job done, Henry, just like his canon counterpart, proves himself to be one step above every other character within his debut franchise.

There's another Umineko: When They Cry candidate, and a non-magical one. I don't know if he'll count, but worth checking, Tetsurō Okonogi .

Setting:

Umineko: When They Cry is a fantasy/mystery visual novel and the 2nd entree of the When They Cry franchise. Taking place in a time loop at the Islands of Rokkenjima in the dates of Oct 4-5, 1986, the famous Ushiromiya Family are having there annual family meeting discussing the affairs of the bloodline, but this year is especially important because of the dying state of the patriarch of the Ushiromiyas, Kinzo, and the discussion of his inheritance towards his four children.

Centering Battler Ushiromiya, he finds himself intangle in a game of logic and wit against the Golden Witch Beatrice, after murders has been repeatedly happening revolving around the Epitaph of the Golden Witch and the Legend of Beatrice. Battler has actually found himself in the Meta-World, a plane above the physical world, and the has been set for Battler to learn and remember the truth of what happened in Rokkenjima and the many secrets the Ushiromiya family has kept hidden.

Let's talk about someone in the real world, who benefited from the Rokkenjima Massacre, and masterminds many of the events in 1998, years after the initial setting. Eva having been the only survivor, this is her right-hand who's now trying usurp the Ushiromiya Group for himself playing as Ange's guardian, Tetsurō Okonogi.

Who is Tetsurō Okonogi and his deeds?

The right-hand of Eva, Tetsurō Okonogi is Ange's initial guardian during the story. Having helped Eva put the coglamorate to power after the family's death, he was tasked to watch over Ange after Eva's death, meeting her to talk about her inheritance and the affairs of the Ushiromiyas. Explaining his side of Eva, claiming she didn't commit the Rokkenjima Massacre despite Ange's suspicion, explaining magic to Ange when she inquired to help her like the Devils Proof, Okonogi ordered Ange to stay out of Ushiromiya affairs being targetted by her aunt Kasumi.

Helping her escape Kasumi when she came, Okonogi tasked her to be protected by Amakusa who joined her in her adventure to figure the truth of the Rokkenjima Massacre. Visiting key witnesses, Ange's main story is learning more while dealing with the pressure as the sole Ushiromiya survivor. Okonogi however intends to have her killed, since her unwilling to take over fractured the company, communicating with Amakusa till they the perfect time to kill Kasumi and her men, before killing Ange while he keeps the Group in control.

When Ange arrives in Rokkenjima, Okonogi had Amakusa kill their targets when Ange invoke the Stakes to fight back against Kasumi, ending with them killed and Ange sent back in time to the Meta-World to help Battler beat Beatrice. Things become screwy after, with Ange diving deeper to the mystery while Okonogi remains in the background.

It ends when Ange returns after her initial attempted suicide or at the boat before Rokkenjima, where she either surrenders her inheritance to Okonogi but remains under his protection, or she figures Okonogi's plot, and kills Amakusa and the boat captain, escaping to the sea with a manifestated Erika, coming out victorious either way because without Ange, Okonogi is able to take over the conglamorate.

Magnificence:

He's took the Ushiromiya coglamorate by manipulating everyone, from Ange, to Kasumi and the Sumaderas to successfully take over without a fuss, getting them killed or to leave, while he wins over the Board, even Ange by making him her inheritor. Among the pure humans, Okonogi has supernatural knowledge admittedly, he's a master manipulator.

If Ange is aware of what's happening, he still wins since Ange still leaves, leaving a rift for Okonogi to take over. Only loss is Amakusa, his loyal assassin, which he can afford.

Too Bad?

He'd sacrifice anyone for power to gain the Ushiromiya coglamorate for himself, including his guard Ange, but he has a sense of honor. He gave comfort to Ange despite planning to kill her, hoping to amends her with Eva even after her death, had her protected until he killed Kasumi, and spared her when she willing gives the company, giving support afterwards, dropping his attempted assassination.

He also respects Eva and the Ushiromiya's, and Ange despite his plans. A ruthless man, with some restraint.

There's hints he might be the same Tetsurō Okonogi, but that's neither confirm, and he still shows honor despite him killing villagers, reasoning it's to prevent the Himazawa Syndrome, so extreme but not unreasonable.

Final Verdict:

Not the most interesting keeper, but still counts.

[tup] Okonogi.

Happy Easter to those who celebrate it. Here's an EP completely unrelated to Easter but very much related to my love of Vertigo Comics!

What's the work?

Sebastian O is an early Vertigo miniseries from your comrade in Mind Screw and mine, Grant Morrison. Set in a steampunk Victorian London more advanced than the present day due to the rediscovery of lost secrets from the Library of Alexandria, we follow Sebastian O'Leary, an assassin who wants only one thing in life - to kill tons of people and look damn fine doing it. Formerly a member of Club de Paradis Artificiel, a secret society of fellow amoral hedonists, he was arrested in a police raid on the club and tossed into Bedlam House for being gay (as opposed to any of his innumerable actual crimes, of course), and now he's escaped to make the people responsible pay the piper.

As diabolically cool as Sebastian himself is, though, he isn't our candidate as he flunks some of our other qualifiers - he's extremely classist for one ("How I detest the poor" is an actual thing he says) and sees nothing wrong with being close friends with a sadistic Pedophile Priest. Now, his main antagonist, however...

Who is Lord Theo Lavender? What has he done?

A mysterious aristocrat and member of the Paradis Artificiel, Lavender first meets Sebastian O when the latter is in prison for murder, helping him to secure a royal pardon in exchange for helping to apprehend a notorious serial killer. He recruits Sebastian into the Club, but years later, after the club falls following the raid and Sebastian is tossed into Bedlam, he suspects Lavender to have squealed on him as he was the only one untouched by the ensuing scandal - in fact, he's Queen Victoria's favorite courtier now! Lavender himself has a number of henchmen, including his devoted nephew Piers and his Co-Dragons, The Roaring Boys, a trio of hitmen so bizarre even for Morrison characters that I can only defer to their description in The Vertigo Encyclopedia to give you an idea of what they're like - "one is a caricature of a bullying Dickensian villain, another a paranoid's worst nightmare of a dentist, and the third a sort of jungle ninja who talks like a Surrealist poet's version of a serial killer." They weird yo. When he hears Sebastian has escaped from Bedlam, he sends the police and the Roaring Boys after him.

Sebastian escapes into the sewers, killing the "Dickensian" Roaring Boy along the way, but Theo knows he won't go out in public with his clothes covered in sewage, and he knows precisely to whom Sebastian will go for a change - the corrupt clergyman known only as "the Abbe," a former Paradis Artificiel member and the aforementioned Pedophile Priest; as such, Theo reroutes the other two Roaring Boys and the cops there. The "Nightmare Dentist" assassinates the Abbe but is in turn killed by the robotic defenses on his house, and Sebastian again escapes to the last surviving Club member - lesbian transvestite and acclaimed novelist George Harkness. Harkness tells Sebastian that his suspicions of Theo were right on the money - Sebastian was in fact committed because he got a little too close to discovering that Theo was on the verge of a breakthrough in virtual reality technology with the goal of placing everyone in London into a true, well, artificial paradise. Harkness and the Abbe were aware of this, but were threatened into silence by Theo, who poisoned another member of the club to show he was not bluffing.

Sebastian ambushes Theo on a train journey and kills Piers, demanding Theo intercede with the Queen for another pardon for him. Surprisingly, Theo agrees... and, to prove a point, Theo grants the pardon himself! Turns out the Queen's been dead for several months and all her recent public appearances have been a hologram controlled by Theo, making him the true King of England. He engages in a very stylish Sword Cane duel with Sebastian on the top of the train, during which he reveals that Sebastian is too late - he'd already activated his virtual world project, the Magic Lantern, and everyone in London has been put into it without noticing; as proof, he predicts the weather for 10 PM that night. Sebastian replies to this by punting him off the train to his death. Sebastian returns home, apparently entirely successful (save for being briefly waylaid by the Jungle Ninja, whom he quite literally throws under a bus)... except then Theo's weather prediction comes true. Realizing Theo won 35 minutes ago after all, Sebastian simply decides to get high out of his mind on laudanum.

Mitigating issues?

Theo is always cool and polite, and utterly ruthless. While Sebastian frequently gets the better of himself and his henchmen, he also knows the assassin well enough to read him like a book, right down to knowing exactly who he'd go to for a change of clothes. He's definitely less evil than the Abbe, who completely revolts him, but he's quite the bastard all the same, especially since he's willing to work with the Roaring Boys who are complete psychopaths - the Dickensian one feeds a messenger boy to his trained crows for interrupting him, and the Jungle Ninja kills one of the Abbe's traumatized victims just for getting in his way, among other things.

Ordinarily I'd say his death of being tossed off a train to land with a thud on the ground would be too humiliating, but then Sebastian realizes it doesn't matter anyway because he'd already put everyone into his VR happy land long before. There's ONE thing that gives me pause, though. At one point in their final sword duel, Sebastian calls Theo "ugly," and this, after all he's witnessed and done in the story, isn the single thing that outright pisses him off, to the point where he straight-up screams at Sebastian.

Verdict

IMO he'd be an easy yes apart from that one single Berserk Button panel. What say you?

Yeah im making another experimental candidate

What's the work?

1000 Players build MASSIVE civilization in Minecraft is one of Ish's civilization experiments, in which 1000 people are released onto four islands and tasked with building a civilization, being able to do what they want to achieve this goal. The events are at least somewhat fictionalized, as evident in this video, so I think that there's a precedent for an MB candidate.

Who is Wazz0ck? What does he do?

Wazz0ck is one of the denizens of the Jungle island who plans to "take over the world". If we'll be honest, not much happened in the first half. He became the leader of his own tribe with his right-hand man Darbo, and he engaged in a silly sitcom feud with his tribe members who built a library. He also built a massive sand trap, which will be relevant later.

See, the jungle is kind of a chaotic mess. Due to the maze-like nature and light-blocking cover of the trees, it's very difficult to communicate and coordinate with other members of the Jungle island, which caused several independent tribes to form. The three tribes relevant to this EP is Wazz0ck's, SethHypen's tribe, and the "Sea People". The Sea People are a tribe of peacekeepers, killing any and all criminals in the area in an effort to quell the chaos, and it just so happens that many of the supposed wrongdoers are allies of SethHypen. This understandably flared tensions, which began to worry Wazz0ck greatly.

Wishing to stop an intercontinental war from breaking out (As SethHypen was allied with Sidefall, a plains leader, and he would likely have to be dragged along), Wazz0ck formulated a plan to stop the war by giving them a common enemy: him. Since the stakes were so high, Yeetspeak, leader of the Sea People, and SethHypen agreed to meet one last time to see if they could reach a compromise, and Wazz0ck offered to have his tribe as the neutral grounds. Both agreed, and they began trying to discuss their matters. Unfortunately, neither side was willing to compromise, and as soon as war was declared, Wazz0ck had his second-in-command Darbo activate the sand trap, killing seven high-ranking officials across both sides and instantly turning him into the most wanted person in the Jungle.

And you know what, his plan worked! SethHypen and Yeetspeak agreed to put the war on hold to track him down, and Wazz0ck ran for a day until he eventually chose to turn himself in deciding he didn't want to live as a fugitive. Knowing he would be publicly executed, he gave one simple speech before he was pushed off the top of a large tree and fell to his death, giving the jungle one last moment of unity before the final battle in day 10.

Magnificent?

Not so much in the first half, but he definitely became magnificent. He basically conducted a successful Zero-Approval Gambit and painted a massive target on his own back to have two warring factions form an Enemy Mine before more blood could be shed, and chose to face his inevitable death with dignity afterwards. Simple, yet I think he meets this half.

Bastard?

His goals were unambiguously noble, but he explicitly killed several innocent people to achieve them, so yes. That being said, he's not too much of a bastard either as he's a Well-Intentioned Extremist who only did what he did to stop a war from breaking out.

Verdict

[tup] for me personally.

Question about Okonogi. Should we also take his actions in Higurashi into account, because that could paint him in a very different light (assuming he is the same man, which is heavily implied but not technically confirmed).

Considering Bernkastel is the amalgamation of all the dead Rikas from Higurashi, thus confirming they exist in the same universe, I see no reason to believe this isn’t the same Okonogi. It’s not like Eua and Featherine who are different versions of a god-like entity; Okonogi is a mere human. Unless there is any evidence Umineko takes place in an alternate timeline from Higurashi.

Also, no one has responded to these concerns about song!Magolor.

Understand Ryukishi07 reuses characters from his games to other entrees, but there not always the same character. Battler was reuse in Rose Guns Days, doesn't mean he's the same in Umineko. Ryukishi explained it's like actors playing different roles, indicating alternative versions of the same person, but there still connected since Rika and Bern can summon and talk to each other when wanted.

Best way to say is this Okonogi may or may not, but are similar. St. Lucia the boarder school Shion hated in Higurashi is in where Ange suffered, but the connections are vague. I'm aware Higurashi in Umineko is just a book, but Bernkastel and Lambdadelta indicate it's an alternate world. When They Cry has a multiverse so it fits.

[up][up][up] Oh right, I forgot about that and I can definitely see why somebody would see this things as issues and was unsure about those things myself, but I ultimately feel that they don't disqualify him too much:

  1. While he isn't as magnificent as his original game version due to the songs only adapting the final boss sequence, I still feel like the cutscene that was ripped from the game itself with the flashbacks to earlier moments in Return to Dreamland does just enough to show Magolor's scheming from the original game and still has enough characterization from the song lyrics.
  2. The possession by the Crown was a major concern of mine when I was writing the effortpost and I can definitely see why some would think it's disqualifying, but I didn't think it was far too big of an issue since Magolor does do enough to bounce back from that setback (in my eyes) even if his possesion and downfall due to his hubris and he dropping of his bastard qualities is more re-emphasized than canon.
I hope that clears up things somewhat and if people decide to switch to downvotes of abstains or if he gets approved and later is deemed a cut thanks to these concerns, then I won't mind it too much and he was still worth a discussion and I can use this as a learning experience for potential future candidates.

Yes to Theo and Wazz0ck.

Has anyone called Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire on this thread?

It's been 3 days since I made my EP for the Juno Songs version of Magolor and he only has upvotes at the moment, but there were a few concerns brought up that were mostly ignored (sorry for that), so I've decided to continue the discussion on the cleanup thread here and won't post the writeup until that discussion is finished (and I'm planning on putting it through GHWE first, but that's irrelevant to the discussion).

If you want to potentially change your vote due to these issues or state you don't find these concerns to be issues that disqualify him, then come to the cleanup thread and join the conversation there. I won't mind it if he's rejected/deemed a cut since I wasn't too sure on him as a candidate anyway.
