Old Complete Monster cleanup thread

Welcome to the Complete Monster proposal thread! This is the thread where new Complete Monster examples are vetted, approved, and written up. If you're looking for the general cleanup thread (for cuts, rewrites, expansions, and the like), please go here

Important: Before suggesting any new examples, please read the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List; if you have any questions, the odds are high they are answered there. Additionally, please check here for the earliest date a work can be discussed (usually two weeks from the U.S. release date) and whether the work has already been reserved by another user.

Here is how the process works:

    Process

  1. If you have a candidate to propose, you can simply come right in and propose them! If the character's run is brief, such as a single issue of a comic book, then a simple summary of their actions and any potential redeeming qualities will be enough; for longer-running candidates, an effortpost (EP) might be helpful for organizing the proposal. An EP is not outright required, but please be mindful that if a post becomes too clunky and unorganized, it can be very hard for other people to follow.

  2. After the proposal, there will be a 72-hour discussion and voting period, where people may ask questions and vote on the candidate. The number of upvotes must outnumber the downvotes by at least five for the character to be considered "approved".

  3. Three days after the proposal has been made, if the character has been approved, you may post the writeup (the text to be posted on the trope page itself) on the thread and send it to the drafts page. Your candidate will soon be added to the CM subpage. If the work has a page, you should add your candidate to the relevant YMMV page. Voila! It's that simple!

Outside of this process, we do have a few ground rules:

    Ground Rules

  1. To keep the thread moving at a reasonable pace, there are some restrictions on when a proposal can be made. There should only be a maximum of four EPs posted both per page and per hour to ensure that nothing gets lost in the shuffle; additionally, each individual troper should only be proposing or writing up characters from a maximum of three works at a time (from initial proposals to end of their voting period). If your proposal would fall outside of either of these guidelines, we'd like to ask you to please wait until they would fit within; feel free to type them up on an outside document, and then when the time comes, you can just copy, paste, and post!

  2. No plagiarism of any kind. This is a very serious matter site-wide, as the website could get in actual legal trouble over this; as a result, this can very quickly lead to mod intervention. This can take many different forms:
    1. Direct plagiarism, i.e. wholesale copying. This is not only the easiest to find, but is also the most likely to warrant quick moderator intervention. To be clear, quoting in some places is perfectly acceptable, but it has to be very clear you're quoting from something else and it cannot be anything longer than a sentence or two - if you're quoting an entire work summary from Wikipedia, no one is going to believe you've actually consumed the work, so even if you cite your source, your candidate will be downvoted anyway.
    2. Self-plagiarism. Even if you can prove that you wrote the same text in both places, the site itself can't contain any of the duplicated text. If you already wrote something once before, it's not too hard to write it a second time.
    3. Using another site's work as a template for a proposal. Just because you don't copy and paste something directly doesn't mean it's any harder to detect if you're basing parts or all of your proposal on text someone else wrote. To be clear, this doesn't violate site rules and won't lead to mod intervention, but just like if you directly plagiarize, no one will believe you've consumed the work if you're clearly basing your proposal on something else. This thread largely operates on the honor system, and tweaking someone else's work to pass it off as your own is one of the fastest ways to lose trust.

  3. Votes must be for specific candidates, meaning no blanket voting (i.e. "yes to everyone I missed").

  4. If you are the first person to downvote a candidate, please provide an explanation of why when you do so. We're here for discussions above all, and a hit-and-run downvote doesn't facilitate anything.

  5. If a work is already reserved by another user, please don't comment on the work or any potential characters worth discussion before the discussion date. We know how exciting it is when a work has a keeper that you're waiting to talk about, but it's not fair to the person who reserved the work who is just as excited to lead the discussion to see the discussion getting spoiled before they get to do it. On the other hand, if the reservation only has one name attached, shoot them a PM - they may be down for a collaboration, which will get you in on the fun as well!

  6. Please keep the thread on-topic. While discussing the trope is fun and we encourage people to enjoy it, questions like "who's your favorite CM" are off-topic and can lead to thumps. That's the kind of question to take to people's PMs if they're willing. Similarly, while we encourage friendliness and familiarity with other users, posts should always have some kind of thread-relevant purpose; for instance, if you want to wish someone a happy birthday, feel free to, but if it's the only thing in the post, it's off-topic and needs something else alongside it. Again, though, while we strive for a friendly atmosphere, this is not Facebook; life updates are fun, but unless they have some kind of impact on your thread participation, please do not bring it here - we have Yack Fest for that.

  7. Please refrain from asking anything along the lines of "How Did We Miss This One?" In almost every case, the answer is simply "No one thought about it before". This Is a Wiki where everyone has different interests, and the fact that people missed a particular candidate, even one that seems like a textbook example of a trope or a character who is particularly iconic in pop culture, means absolutely nothing. The question is disruptive, has a simple and consistent answer, and provides nothing to any discussion.

  8. If you are suspended from parts of the website, it is still possible to participate!
    1. For users who are suspended from editing the wiki, you still have full access to this thread. You can propose candidates and write them up with no issues whatsoever; while you will have to ask someone else to post the entry to the relevant pages once it is done, all write-ups are considered thread-approved - as in, done by consensus - and thus doing so does not violate any rules regarding meatpuppeting.
    2. If you are suspended from the forums, your participation is limited but not impossible. It is still possible for a forum-suspended user to assist in creating the write-up for a character who has already been approved; as previously mentioned, write-ups are inherently considered a consensus-based edit and thus not tied to any one particular user. However, you can not assist in the proposal of a character; as a proposal is based around the forum rather than the wiki, doing so with a forum suspension qualifies as meatpuppeting.

  9. Please keep all discussions "in-house".
    1. What other wikis use for CM equivalents is irrelevant here.
    2. Please be wary of using other wikis, Fandom or otherwise, as sources of information. They are just as fallible as a site like Wikipedia in regards to accuracy because they can be edited by any user, just as this site can.
    3. Do not attempt to force a communication with an author in an attempt to gather evidence or settle a debate; besides the fact that this is a YMMV trope and thus author intent has variable weight depending on the circumstance, doing so may cross the line into drama exportation, which is prohibited site-wide.

If you would like to use an EP for your candidate, here's the general format. This format does not have to be followed exactly, but these are the main topics that need to be covered:

    Effortpost Template

What is the work?

This is a brief summary of the work you're going to discuss. We don't need a full plot summary here, just however much we need to understand going into the discussion — it can even be as simple as quoting the summary on the work's page.

Who is the candidate and what have they done?

This is essentially the character's biography — who they are, their story, the crimes they commit, and, preferably (though not required), what happens to the candidate at the end. It does not have to include every single thing they ever do — for some villains, we'd be here all day if that was the case — but it should include the highlights of their journey.

Any redeeming qualities? Freudian Excuse?

This is where any potential redeeming characteristics or tragic backstory should be discussed. Do they have a tragic past? Do they show that Even Evil Has Standards or Even Evil Has Loved Ones? Maybe a Pet the Dog moment or two? This is where these should be discussed in full. Not every potential redeeming moment is a clear-cut disqualifier, but we should hear of any potential issues to ensure the character is discussed in full.

Are they bad enough?

A Complete Monster has to be particularly vile by the standard of the work they appear in. Therefore, you should look at what the character does compared to similar characters in the same work. This takes into account things like:

  • Their resource level (a human Serial Killer can't stand up to an alien Omnicidal Maniac, but they can be bad by the standard of other human serial killers)
  • The amount of time they have to work with (such as a one-shot character versus long-running antagonists)
  • The quantity vs. quality of their crimes compared to others (someone with a lower victim count but far more visceral and personal crimes could be considered as equally bad overall as someone with a higher body count but less horror involved)

Essentially, this section is an analysis of the kinds of villainy shown in the work and an explanation of why this particular character's villainy stands out within it.

Final verdict?

This is where you post your final conclusion on the character in question. You can continue elaborating on your reasons or even just say a simple "yes" or "no"; at this point, we've heard everything we need to hear.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: This thread tackles very serious and dark matters on a daily basis. We will be discussing things like murder, rape, torture, human trafficking, crimes against children, and in particularly dark cases, several of these issues at the same time. We keep a lighthearted air, but all candidates carry the general assumption that these are awful individuals committing disgusting crimes. We ask that if you participate, you do so with the requisite seriousness such dark topics require; exclamations of how gross something is, whether serious or sarcastic, are disrespectful to the topics at hand, and if you cannot handle such topics, please do not participate.

And that's everything you need to know. Welcome to the thread!

[up][up]Well he didn't bring it up to me. I don't care what he told you, I didn't know about it.

And no, I did not forget the heinous standard. One would think overseeing mass slaughter and enjoying it is bad enough, but pardon me for not mentioning Hojo...not doing that?

I recommend you get off my back next time.

Hojo has the same position as Scarlet and you mentioned the other Executives but left out Hojo when discussing competition

So yes I believe that is worth pointing out someone with similar authority doing worse then her

Also how the heck is mass slaugheter bad enough in a series where that is common place by both Shinra and Sephorith?

It seems a like ridiculous downplay of the FF 7 standards

Also Hojo not doing mass slaughter?

uh

no he has done that

so even more damning to Scarlet counting.

And I do not see the reasons for the agressivness here.

You left out vital information and i pointed out why that was the case.

why are you being defensive?

[up][up]I did not discuss other executives in terms of competition, except for in a broad sense as a group, and Hojo is a member of that group.

Regardless, you and others have made your point, I'll drop her and see what happens in Part 3 to elevate her heinous standard.

EDIT - I'm being defensive because your initial post was to accuse me of "bad form" for not taking into account information I didn't have. And as I've dropped my candidate, this conversation serves no further purpose.

If their are only three other human traffickers out a series with nearly a thousand episodes, I don't think there is any issue with them keeping (honestly his dragon sounds like he might keep as well, unless he's just Krzychi's trigger man).

I'm gonna hit back on the votes in a minute. But for now...

In this rendition of "I Tried Playing an Old-School Game Then Got Salty Because the Memory Card Corrupted My Save Data"...

Vigilante 8 is a Vehicular Combat game from the 90s inspired by Interstate '76. The plot is pretty basic: an oil conglomerate known as OMAR has been gradually buying all the oil companies around the world, with the exception of the ones in the United States. In order to destabilize the country, OMAR hired Australian terrorist Sid Burn to destroy all of the oil and gas foundations in the region. Sid and a gang of criminals named the Coyotes steal a bunch of hi-tech weaponry for their cars and go to town, blowing up everything in sight. When law enforcement can't handle them, a man named Convoy forms a group of Vigilantes called...the Vigilantes to swoop in and save the day.

Despite dismantling the Coyotes and "disappearing" Sid Burn, the Vigilantes fail to stop OMAR from taking over the rest of the world and turning it into a smog-infested wasteland by the 2010s. In Vigilante 8: 2nd Offense, the CEO of OMAR is frustrated over failing to conquer America. After he and two of his subordinates steal time-travel machinery, they go back into the 70s to kill Convoy, destroy the Vigilantes, and take over America (and the rest of the world) for good.

So let's chat about the company's CEO...

Who Is He?

Lord Clyde is the Big Bad of the second game and the CEO of OMAR/new leader of the Coyotes.

What Has He Done?

So Lord Clyde originally started off as Slick Clyde, your stereotypical country hick who drives in a Clydesdale jeep. Originally a drifter going to an Auto Show, Slick Clyde chose to help out the Vigilantes after Convoy and his second-in-command, John Torque, were impressed with his vehicle and imposed. So he does, assisting the Vigilantes in taking out the Coyotes while growing more irritated by Convoy's demands and the damage his jeep sustains. As the Vigilantes gradually mop up the Coyotes and Torque ends capturing Sid Burn, Clyde considers murdering Convoy and taking over the Vigilantes. Before he can do so, he comes across cyborg Houston 3's armband (which she managed to pry off) and straps it on...which takes over his mind and turns him evil.

Jumping into 2nd Offense, Slick Clyde has started working for OMAR, selling pricey oil to impoverished nations and doing dozens of dirty dealings. Over the span of decades, Slick Clyde soon becomes CEO of the company and successfully ends up owning or destroying every single oil company around the world (except America), now donning the moniker "Lord Clyde." Unfortunately, Lord Clyde's illegal dealings and "acquisitions" did not go unnoticed; the CIA and United Nations started investigating him. Not helping matters was Clyde's deteriorating health, as the man was pushing seventy now. Refusing to pass on without seeing America crumble, Lord Clyde discovered time traveling capsules at Stanford University. He dispatched Obake, his trusted assistant, to steal the device so he, Obake, and his cybernetic assassin Dallas 13 could travel back to the 70s and turn America into a wasteland.

Now back in the past, Lord Clyde works quickly, recruiting Nina Loco and former Coyotes Molo and Boogie and "killing" Convoy to dismantle the Vigilantes. The Coyotes start mowing their way through America, robbing a ski resort, blowing up an oil refinery, and destroying a nuclear power plant. Clyde also sends Dallas 13 to kill Houston (who underwent a Heel–Face Turn after taking off her armband), which fails repeatedly and results in Dallas 13's death. Running out of manpower, Clyde steals more cash to hire more assassins, but hits a major setback when Houston hijacks Dallas 13's vehicle to go back in time and bring back Convoy. With Convoy back, the Vigilantes hunting him, Dallas 13 dead, and Agent R. Chase on his tail, Clyde decides it's time to cut and run. As he's fleeing, he's stopped by Chase...and then suddenly knocked out by Obake. When Clyde wakes back up, he discovers he's handcuffed in his car and that Obake has betrayed him. Why, you ask?

Weeeeeeeelllll, Obake's storyline reveals that her best friend/partner, Darius, went missing. And after working with Dallas 13 for some time, she realizes that Dallas 13 is Darius; Clyde had him converted into a biobot and routinely tortured him to suppress any emotions and thoughts about his former life. To make matters worse, she also learns that Clyde murdered her father during his rise to power to eliminate any competition. As expected, Obake does not take this well—especially after Dallas 13 is killed on top of all this. So she knocked out Clyde, went back to the future, and handcuffed him inside his limo. With no hesitation, she engages the limo's autopilot, flies straight into OMAR's HQ with the weapons armed, and bails out, leaving Clyde to perish in a fiery explosion.

Mitigating Factors?

Okay, so I have an issue here we should chat about. The first one is not that he was a true hero loyal to the Vigilantes. He was the group's Token Evil Teammate / Attention Whore who considered overthrowing the Vigilantes because he didn't like Convoy and Torque. So we'll scrap that.

My problem stems around his Face–Heel Turn. The armband he puts on was a mind-control device that kept Houston under OMAR's control. She broke free, became good, and joined the Vigilantes. When Clyde puts it on, it warps his brain and he becomes evil. Neither game explains how or why this happens—and this is further muddled because Houston is a cyborg...Clyde is human (or a mutant since he has lightning powers). Yet somehow he was susceptible to the armband's powers. What makes even less sense is that Dallas 13 is a full-fledged robot with a human's brain inside of it, and Clyde has to reprogram him several times because he keeps gaining his memories of his past life and hesitates to fight for Clyde.

All this being said? After Clyde slaps on the circuitry, he has no complaints. When he starts working for OMAR selling oil, he becomes filthy rich. The second game also makes it clear he doesn't even care about that. He's in it "for the power, the action, the dirty dealings, and above all — he's out to make history!"

Overall, a forced Face–Heel Turn, but one that Clyde was okay with, if not flat-out happy about.

Heinous Standard Issues?

Pretty easy clear. Padre Destino tries to start the apocalypse, but it's implied he's a bit unhinged. Sid Burn was the Big Bad of the original game, but despite all he's done, he never set out to achieve global domination. That being said, still tempted to do an EP on him since he more or less succeeded in starting an oil crisis and caused wanton destruction with the Coyotes. All the other Coyotes have a Heel–Face Turn, Freudian Excuse, or don’t make the mark. Lord Clyde, meanwhile, is a narcissist who only joined the Vigilantes to fuel his ego. In the sequel...he does just that, going back in time just to kill Convoy and the other Vigilantes, as well as taking over all of America so he'll have full domination of the world. Not to mention other tidbits, like him brainwashing Obake's best friend and turning him into a murderous robot, killing Obake's father and manipulating her into working for him, sending Coyotes on multiple missions to rob and/or blow up American monuments...y'know, the "little" things.

There's also no need to compare it to Vigilante 8 Arcade, as that game has its own continuity and straight-up removes Clyde...for some reason.

Final Verdict?

Unsure. The means concerning his Face–Heel Turn give me pause. I'll let y'all decide what to do in that regard.

Abstain on Clyde for [up] reasons

I have another Fanfic Palpatine for us.

What is the work?

What If Darth Sidious SECRETLY Cloned Anakin Skywalker is another Pente Patrol Star Wars Fanfic video. As you can guess plot is that Palpatine had Anakin cloned.

What has Palpatine done here?

Shortly before Anakin is wounded in battle of Maridun, Sidious had a vision of him being irreperably burned and damaged. When wounded Anakin was brought to Coruscant, Palpatine has Nala Se clone him as back-up plan. On Mount Tantiss, countless Clones of Anakin are created, majority of them being failures who dies either shortly after creation or in Bakta tanks. Palpatine and Kaminoans were able to make clones Force sensitive thanks to Anakin not drown in the Dark Side like Palpatine, cultivating minds of Jedi and turning them to Dark Side.

Sidious had Inguisitors hunt Jedi and bring them to Tantiss to help cultivating the Clones with the Light Side, while Vader was given mundane tasks like enslaving Wookies and other species Palpatine describes as lesser beings. His plan was for Vader to either completely loses godness in him or to eventually get killed by one of his own clones. Year after rise of the Empire, Palpatine organises for Vader to face clone on Thyferra under guise of being sent to hunt down Jedi survivor. When Vader kills clone and returns to Coruscant, Palpatine electrocuted him and plays of fight as manifestation of Vader’s uncentrainity, having clone’s body replaced with body of Jedi killed during the purge to mantain illusion.

When three Clones were finished, Palpatine took them to Exegol where he builds Final Order as Contingency in case he needs to take over galaxy by the force. He trains Clones to be better than Vader in ligtsaber battle, eventually having them battle until only one remained. After Vader was beaten by Kenobi, Palpatine sends clone to kill him. Palpatine arrives on Mustafar to watch battle, mocking and personally killing Vader with Ligthning. Now with Anakin clone as his apprentice, Palpatine continues with his ultimate plan, create army of clones with Anakin’s midiclorian count and drain them all to become Force God.

When Death Star was destroyed, Palpatine sends his apprentice to kill Luke and Obi Wan (who survived events of new hope). While second Death Star nears completion and it superlaser used as prototype for Final Order fleet, he prepares for his final Victory. Coming to Exegol where nearly hundred clones of Anakin and Jedi he captured, where he spends 3 years cultivating Dark Side to point where he can make his plan a reality. Meanhvile Luke and Leia, alongside Kenobi and Yoda who trained them, face clone Anakin on Chandrila after he comited “a small genocide” to get their attention.

Clone Anakin wins and kills them, starting to plot ot overthrow Palpatine while he is called to Exegol. Palpatine drains essence from his apprentice and does starts draining clones, becoming God for a moment before he is destroyed by amount of power he absorbed and takes Exegol with him. Empire is left withous strong leader and made into more democratic goverment, eventually to be reformed back into Republic while both Jedi and Sith arts are lost to time.

Reddeming qualities?

Palpatine.

Heinous standard?

All his prequel era crimes, tyranny across the galaxy, planning to drain all Clones and become God to rule over universe and lot of personal nastines along the way.

Conclusion?

Yes.

[up][up] That's why I'm iffy. I don't know; I've been combing through the game's cutscenes for more clarification, but I don't think it's explained. All I can say is that, whether or not Clyde is brainwashed, he's perfectly content with his new position. To quote the game:

"It may seem ironic that Clyde's life's work was determined by a piece of OMAR circuitry, but Clyde sure ain't complaining — selling pricey oil to impoverished nations has made him a fortune."

I really can't tell just how aware he is of his current predicament. But regardless, Clyde's reaction isn't "Damn it, I can't control my actions!" It's more so "...Oh hey, I'm rich now. Fuck it; I'm staying with the bad guys."

I will point out, since you asked if he has capacity of doing good...keep in mind he only joined the Vigilantes for fame and glory, and it's outright stated he doesn't care about their cause. This is before he got brainwashed.

It doesn't seem like the game is actually flat-out saying he's brainwashed, though, if it's ascribing his motives explicitly to greed and power-thirst as opposed to "this thing made him evil." And if was already willing to consider cold-blooded murder before he put on the wristband, it sure doesn't seem like he's changed much, if any.

Unless there's in-game evidence saying outright he's not in control of himself, I'm saying yes to Clyde.

Palpatine is Palpatine. So that's all that needs to be said about my vote. tongue

Y'all, I can't find much of anything else regarding Clyde. There's no quotes, no backstory, no moments in his campaign of him trying to break free of control, no moments of him regretting his decisions, no moments of him stating he's being brainwashed, and nothing showing that Clyde is being forced to be evil and do OMAR's bidding. Okay—this is all I can do now. I'm gonna compare/contrast Clyde with Houston and Dallas XIII, the other brainwashed characters in the series.

  • Houston 3
    • Was originally a young woman named Tanyah.
    • Kidnapped by OMAR, turned into cyborg, forced to do their commands.
    • Repeatedly questions why she does what she does and why she has feelings for Vigilante leader Convoy.
    • Cuts off her armband through sheer Heroic Willpower, joins Convoy, becomes a Vigilante.

  • Dallas XIII
    • Was originally a young man named Darius.
    • Was "recruited" by Lord Clyde, and at some point, converted into a cybernetic assassin.
    • Repeatedly questions why he remembers the name Darius and repeatedly hesitates to follow Clyde's commands.
    • Hesitates to kill Houston at first.
    • Is repeatedly tortured/reprogrammed to have his feelings and memories of Darius' life suppressed until what remains of his humanity is completely gone.
    • Tragically killed by Houston in self-defense.

  • Lord Clyde
    • Was originally a young man named Slick Clyde.
    • Joins the Vigilantes solely to boost his ego, despite not liking Convoy or Torque or caring about their cause.
    • Repeatedly gets irritated with Convoy's demands, but lets them go since he's in the spotlight.
    • Gets fed up with the Vigilantes and conspires to kill Convoy and take over.
    • Finds Houston's armband in the bathroom she pried it from and puts it on because this man is smart like that.
    • Willingly tries to get the Coyotes to come back after they disbanded; this fails.
    • Willingly joins OMAR and starts working for them without them needing to "persuade" or threaten him to.

[tdown] Clyde, mind control issue sounds too hazy

[up] x7 Minami has a few too many comedic scenes and his crimes fall short on gravitas, maybe if his finale teaser scene was followed through, but it ended 14 years ago...

[tup] Janusz and Another Palpatine

I'm personally leaning "yes" on Clyde, even if it's ambigious whether or not he's brainwashed, from the details presented I feel the story does ultimately lean into the interpretation that he was already evil beforehand and willingly chose to use the wristbands instead of him being forced to use it.

[tdown] to the Combine. I'm fine with letting groups with 4 to 6 members onto this trope, but an Evil Empire is still too large for all of the members to be given characterization in my eyes.

So there's no indication either way if Clyde knows he's brainwashed? Or even what the armband would do? That's too ambiguous. Switching to abstain, but leaning no.

As for Janusz...

[up] Only one actually dead. One almost killed. And many women are seen entering the home to a "party". Admitteldy, what happens to them after the party if they "obey" and how long has it been going... that isn't elaborated on."

Yeah, that's too reliant on implications for my liking.
