- Since Panty Shot is now a Definition-Only Page, examples are not allowed and must be removed, but references to the term can stay. Sandbox.Wick Cleaning Shot is being used to list which namespaces have already been cleaned.
Panty Shot seems to be suffering from an assortment of problems at the moment. It's defined as being a gratuitous shot of a (female) character's panties/underwear explicitly for Fanservice reasons, but it has a tendency to be used for "any time underwear are visible" or non fanservice underwear displays (ie: Comedic Underwear Exposure). There's also an issue of it attracting ZCEs, likely out of fear that going into detail will sound creepy or weird (which it can be at times).
The wick check gave results of...
- Correct Use 12/51: 23.5%
- Misuse: Panties/underwear visible without being fanservicey 8/51: 15.7%
- Other misuse 2/51: 3.9%
- ZCE 19/51: 37.3%
- Unclear/Other/Pothole 10/ 51 19.6%
And I was being generous with correct use too, if we cut correct use down to only correct onpage examples rather than correct uses of it with clear context as potholes, it goes down to only 7 correct uses ( 13.7%), and if we include only completely played straight examples, it goes down to only 4 (7.8%) correct uses.
I'm not sure exactly what fix will solve the issues here, myself... but there are definitely several problems plaguing the trope at the moment. Perhaps a rename to emphasize the gratuity would help? (Gratuitous Panty Shot?)

This example is on Neon Genesis Evangelion:
- Panty Shot: Subverted twice. The first instance is when Toji tries to teach Shinji how to turn cleaning the stairs into a peeping opportunity and gets caught by Hikari; despite the boys looking up at her, her panties are barely visible if at all. The second is when Shinji, Toji, and Kensuke first meet Asuka in the arcade. Although she's in a skirt and uses a lot of kicks to both abuse the video game she was playing and take out the bullies threatening them, she's never framed at an angle that would allow her panties to be seen even though she thinks the boys got a good look.
I feel like the first is a good fit for The Peeping Tom, but I'm not sure about the second. Thoughts?

I'm not sure the second is really an example of anything, closest things to my mind were either Scenery Censor or maybe a lampshaded Fanservice? I've never watched Evangelion or read the manga version, so my knowledge is based entirely off of the entry as written.

Oh huh, I missed this becoming DO.
I'm fine with it but I feel like this is definitely a thing (I don't like it but it exists even in PG-rated works) that could be moved somewhere — starting from the ground-up would probably cut down on creepiness.
I know someone said they could just be moved to Fanservice but that supertrope is so broad and needs its own work, so it feels like just making things harder to punt it there.
Maybe move the more specific "this is a hot girl whose underwear is shown for no reason" examples like... Underwear For Fanservice? So we could A) expand to other unnecessary underwear shots (like bras maybe?) and B) make it more specifically about a work showing off a character who is intended to be attractive.
EDIT: Actually never mind, I forgot DO still allows potholes and most gushing problems come from examples anyway, I just got confused and thought we were salting the earth.

Okay, I've cleaned the Panty Shots redirect again (I've removed 10 wicks; 2 remain — both sandboxes connected to this TRS).
Hopefully, it stays clean this time. However, I'm not hopeful — I still periodically check Fetish Fuel because people still pothole to it. I suspect Panty Shot will suffer the same issue for some time to come.
If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.

Panty Shot was defined as a gratuitous fanservice/sexual trope though. People voted to turn it into a definition only term because most of the wicks that were checked didn't have enough context to indicate that the trope was being used to provide gratuitous fanservice or were just listing of underwear shots. It was also difficult to add context to the examples without going over the line. The crowner concluded long before you posted on this thread.
Another thing: Please don't come here to just complain about how things are done on the site. That's not productive.
