Preschool shows cleanup

Go To

It has been discussed on the wiki that the trope pages of shows aimed at younger children have repeated issues, ranging from misuse of darker tropes added to make the shows seem "cooler" to presumably older audiences, to massive amounts of complaining on more-maligned series. I have also noticed large amounts of natter, formatting, and ZCE issues on some of these pages.

Inspired by an idea from ~War Jay 77, this cleanup has been created to help deal with all of these issues, as well as others that come up in regards to these pages.

[up] Don't know about the latter, but the former can probably go since I highly doubt that a moment in a young children's television series could "induce Adult Fear in older viewers."

YMMV.Caillou had two examples removed for complaining re-added (albeit slightly rewritten), both pertaining to the show's removal from reruns:

  • Misaimed Fandom: When PBS announced that the show would be pulled out of reruns, many parents who complained about the show celebrated it being gone.
  • Narm: When PBS Kids announced that they pulled the show off the air, they posted some pictures of advice on social media about how to help kids say goodbye to the show as if someone recently died. It even has a picture of Caillou crying in his mother’s arms.

I don't think the former really counts (they're not part of the fandom at all, and they're not hating the show for missing the point of it, they just disagree with the intended tone of the announcement), but the latter could count. Even those who like the show would probably find the announcement so melodramatic that it looks like a Serious Business joke.

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.

This thread has not been touched for almost a month...

Anyways, one thing I notice with WMG and Headscratchers for preschool shows is that the latter tend to complain about elements which can simply be answered with Rule of Funny given the target audience, and borderline meta examples questioning the fourth wall breaking elements (e.g. Calling Dora the Explorer an idiot for not noticing certain things), while in the case of the former there are tons of dark and farfetched inappropriate examples, blatantly joss-able, which can best be seen on WMG.Dora The Explorer.

Should these entries be removed without discussion?

[up] Eh, I'd say so, what most parodies of preschool shows don't really get is that the shows are meant for little kids who need help with things like properly sharing or saying "thank you".

I found this entry in WesternAnimation.Bluey

  • Abusive Parents: Bluey somewhat inadvertently plays one in "Kids," doting on "Snowdrop" (played by Bingo) and belittling "Diddums" (played by Bandit). It's not until she openly declares Snowdrop her favorite and Diddums, visibly crushed, slumps off to sit dejectedly in time-out that she realizes this whole thing has gotten far more sad than funny, and apologizes.

I really don't think they were trying to potray that subject matter in a preschool show. It sounds like someone trying to make the show sound edgier than it actually is.

[up]Sounds more like Parental Favouritism than Parental Abuse. Also, the example is marred by Weasel Words ("Played somewhat unintentionally").

Deleted that entry, since the example is already listed under Parental favoritism.

While I'm on that show, the main page description of it says that Bluey is 7, but her character page and main page tropes says that she's 6. Which is it?

The official website I found said she's 6. Maybe she had a Birthday Episode, though?

[up] Checked Wikipedia and it appears there was not one for that character.

Reviving this because I found PB&J Otter and had to spend a good deal of time commenting out ZCEs and fixing indentation problems. Putting this here because the page may need more serious help too—I saw some other problems I wasn't really able to fix.

Reposting this because no one replied to it:

Wonder Pets! has a bit of a complaining problem about Ollie and about the show's Aesop about teamwork. I took it to the complaining cleanup thread, and they agreed that it was overly negative but couldn't agree on what to change since Ollie is kind of supposed to be annoying in-universe.

I grew up on that show, but not enough to make substantial edits. But I remember Ollie being The Load in several episodes.

The biggest example of a show whose page needs a MASSIVE clean-up is Ready Jet Go!. There's too much for me to go through myself but while the Trivia and YMMV pages have already been (somewhat) cleaned, and certain pages were deleted after cleaning, there's still a lot of work that needs to be done.

Let me put it this way - despite not being very well-known and having just two seasons, it has three trope sub-pages, which is usually done for either long-running shows like The Simpsons or shows with heavy amounts of lore/fans like Gravity Falls.

I just checked the A folder, and I already noticed a few borderline ZCE examples, some natter, speculations and opinionated examples.

The Fandom Rivalry section on YMMV.Daniel Tigers Neighborhood is an absolute trainwreck. I don't know enough about DTN or most of the other shows mentioned to fix it, though I'm leaning slightly towards cutting it entirely.

I really dislike one-sided Fandom Rivalry examples and I'd love to ban them outright. (Might make a Trope Talk thread about it...)

The MLP example is also really complainy for no reason.

[down] Well that's a little rude...

That Fandom Rivalry section just makes me think of this.

EDIT - I apologize if this link comes across as rude, what I was really trying to say is "people care enough about these specific shows enough to have big fights about them??". I should probably also note that the last time I regularly watched PBS Kids was when I was 11 or so (so we're talking 2011-2012).

"The show also has a rivalry with fans of just about every PBS Kids show currently running..."

No. No it does not. DTN may have Adored by the Network status with PBS Kids — that's a definite fact — but it's about as far from a rivalry as Neptune is from Earth. The first bullet point, where I quoted, also seems like complaining, especially towards the end.

As for the second bullet point, it is null and void. I have never heard of DTN and MLP: FiM being brought up in the same conversation and the two shows have absolutely nothing in common aside from being edutainment. So that being said...

[up][up] Hard agree on that example being complaining. And...

[up][up][up] Hard agree on cuttin' 'em.

It just seems like a list of things the entry writer felt, which they then slid onto the page under Fandom Rivalry

...Do shows intended for audiences this young even have fandoms large and developed enough to have proper rivalries?
