Ban-Evader Reversion Thread

Please read the outline below before proceeding any further.
Important Note: This thread is devoted to reverting the edits of Tropers who have repeatedly chosen to evade their bans and suspensions, since serial ban-evasion is an act which is by its very nature a display of untrustworthiness, the fact that some ban-evaders outright engage in vandalism or add false information notwithstanding.
    open/close all folders
    Overview
As mentioned here, due to the prolific nature of serial ban-evaders, there needs to be a team effort devoted to reverting any and all edits made by ban-evaders, especially serial ban-evaders, and investigating otherwise suspicious edits.
    Sandboxes
In order to accomplish this admittedly Herculean task, sandboxes for Ban-Evader Reversion have been created for the purpose of identifying problematic pages which are edited primarily by ban-evaders.

Depending on how much of the pages can be salvaged, they will either be noted in the B.E.R.T. Watch-List, locked if necessary, or cut if unsalvageable.

Any Frequently Vandalized Pages will also be monitored for suspicious activity.

If you notice a page is primarily edited by a certain ban-evader and/or their socks, please bring your findings to this thread so that cleanup can commence.

Potentially valid examples added by ban evaders should be transferred to Ban-Evader Example Rewrites so they can be salvaged. Make sure to mention transferring examples to the sandbox in your edit reason so others who may be willing to rewrite are aware.

    Resolved Items

Handling General Ban-Evader Edits:

To paraphrase what is stated here and here:
  1. Bad faith is not necessarily assumed with the contributions of first-time ban-evaders, and their contributions can simply be rephrased assuming they're accurate.
  2. Any serial (more than once) ban-evader cannot be taken at their word, so their contributions are subject to harsher scrutiny. Any verifiable examples can be reworded (especially if there are grammatical or formatting issues), but unverifiable, false, or otherwise prohibited edits are removed.
  3. Ban-evaders who deliberately contribute inaccurate or false information are able to have their contributions deleted with little hesitation.
  4. Rewording or reverting can be as simple as expanding on a ban-evader's existing edits, especially if it means adding sufficient context or trimming word cruft.

The subsequent portions of this section outline further how to handle different kinds of edits and contributions.

The following types of edits can be left alone to preserve wiki quality:

  • Grammatical corrections.
  • Spelling corrections.
  • Formatting updates and corrections.note
  • Crosswicked examples from other tropers.
  • Indexing (if accurate).note
  • Accurately written potholes.note
  • Links to the correct Work/Recap/Instalment/Franchise page, including red-linked works.note
  • Archive edits. (See here.)
  • Launched Tropes.note

The following edits might need to be reworded in order to stay on the wiki, and depending on the examples, may need to be re-evaluated/verified in this thread or in the proper cleanup threads.

The following edits should remain hidden until they can be verified, and deleted if proven inaccurate:

  • Zero Context Examples.note

The following items must be sent to the cut-list/otherwise removed on principle (and if applicable, re-created by a trustworthy editor from scratch using a Sandbox):

  • Pages created by ban-evaders using their socks.note
  • Videos uploaded by ban evaders using their socks.note
    Forum Decorum
  • Please refrain from "popcorn posting". This means refraining making comments such as "man, they don't know when to quit", or otherwise unproductive posts.
  • Please maintain an atmosphere of civility.
  • Please do not withhold information about potential sock-puppetry or other ban-evasion related misconduct, as withholding such information makes one an accessory to ban-evasion.
  • When reverting edits, please make notes in the sandboxes, and transfer any potentially valid edits to the appropriate sandbox.
  • When reverting ban-evader edits, please use an appropriate (and civil) edit reason.
  • Should you suspect a ban-evader has shown up in this thread, please do not make open accusations, trash-talk them, or engage in other uncivil behaviour. Quietly holler the post and wait for mod input; if necessary (especially if suspicious edits or issues unrelated to the forum are involved), make a query at "Ask The Tropers".
  • Please respect the thread consensus once it has been established. If an item is resolved, it is usually resolved for a reason.
  • If you have any suggestions for new policies, or wish to contest an old one, do it in the General Policy Discussion, not here.

For the Final Fantasy I character page, should the parts about the novelization that taylorswiftscat added be kept? I don't know if they're really relevant to the article. Perhaps they could be split into another page specifically about the novelization.

[up] If the edits are accurate, and there are at least 3 examples of different tropes from the novelization, feel free to reword the examples and put them on a separate work page for the novelization.

Apparently, Ryzov ban evaded as Book-Buccaneer. As a result, I strongly recommend that Fanfic.Sister Floriana and Literature. The High Seas be locked along with their subpages to prevent any further shenanigans.

Thoughts?

[down] Since I don't intend to read The High Seas, on account of Robert Bitchell (misnaming intended) being a racist douche, I concur that The High Seas can be cut.

[up]The High Seas was created and only edited by the ban evader, so the page should be cut entirely. I don't think Sister Floriana needs to be locked yet because he didn't edit the page while ban evading, but this opinion can always change later.

Buccaneer at least attempted to edit Floriana, though. And I just added an Audience-Alienating Premise entry to the YMMV. The fact that Ryzov did attempt to edit the page raises concerns.

[down] I did notice it on the cutlist. Good work. As for keeping the pages unlocked, that sounds like an interesting proposition, Kev, but I would like input from others as well.

[down][down] That is a reasonable idea, Jay, given that the sock was the sole editor. "Oh boo-hoo. A work page created by the ban-evader who wrote it was cut." [lol]

In case you didn't notice, The High Seas is now on the cutlist, and I reverted all the edits that Serac didn't already take care of. Upon checking Sister Floriana's history, I can see that out of the 69 edits, 62 of them came from Ryzov. This tells me that it would be a good idea to keep the page unlocked because it'll help us identify his next sock puppet faster. And if he removes the Audience-Alienating Premise entry or tries to alter it significantly, it'll be a dead giveaway. Reverting his edits wouldn't be too hard anyway since he shouldn't have a chance to make that many of them next time—we identified the first sock puppet in less than a month.

I agree. We should also keep an eye out for anyone who complains that "High Seas" got cut.

Excellent. Side note; if someone else notices anything suspicious before we do, I think we should direct them to this thread.

I'd hate to remove potentially valid examples from the wiki, so I was thinking we could make Sandbox.Ban Evader Example Rewrites as a place to store ban evasion examples that can be added back once rewritten. Thoughts?
That's not a bad idea.

I was going through the history of Aliens Are Bastards to see what edits Harley Quinn Is Great made, and nearly all of them are him adding examples. I'd hate to remove potentially valid examples from the wiki, so I was thinking we could make Sandbox.Ban Evader Example Rewrites as a place to store ban evasion examples that can be added back once rewritten. Thoughts? And by the way ~Blue Guy, thanks for already rewriting one of the examples.

I think we should also separate the watch list, lock list and cut list into different sandboxes within the main sandbox to organize them better.

Edit:

[down] The locks sandbox is for pages that we are bringing to the locked pages thread. Once a page has been locked, it can be removed from the sandbox.

Sure, I guess, though three sandboxes seems like a lot to juggle; maybe start with one and split it if it gets long. Plus, the locks would be on Locked Pages anyway.

[up][up] I've been busy deleting and transferring examples from Aliens Are Bastards to Ban-Evader Example Rewrites, which took quite a while. B.E.R.T. Watch-List should stay because those pages would be regularly and frequently edited by ban evaders, so it's a good way to let tropers which pages a ban evader would likely edit, as opposed to the main sandbox that's just a to-do list and can potentially have ban evaders make only a few edits to a page, negating any chance at Spotting the Thread.

I don't think the other 2 are necessary because if the cycle is just "add to sandbox, remove from sandbox once page is cut/locked," sandboxes really aren't necessary for that, especially since it'll usually be taken care of within 24 hours. Locked Pages already lists pages that were locked because of banned tropers (although not because of evasion yet), so BERT Locks is redundant as a potential list with it. BERT Cuts is completely unnecessary because it anything we need it for could just be on Ban-Evader Reversion under a ban evader's normal list (in my opinion at least), and regular monitoring of those pages' recreations could be done on B.E.R.T. Watch-List.

I think arguments can be made for the cut and lock sandboxes staying, but they need to be stronger than "add, remove or transfer to another sandbox once cut/locked" to convince me.

Please add this to the Sandbox folder in the pinned post:

Potentially valid examples added by ban evaders should be transferred to Ban-Evader Example Rewrites so they can be salvaged. Make sure to mention transferring examples to the sandbox in your edit reason so others who may be willing to rewrite are aware.

As of today, Nerdanel Nordo has been confirmed as a sock for confirmed ban evader Team Tony, so we probably need to revert their edits as well - here's their edit history. The biggest issues are their edits regarding the MCU, Game of Thrones, and Johnny Depp and Amber Heard.

Adding the following to the Watchlist:

  • Johnny Depp & Amber Heard, as well as their respective subpages: As a result of their toxic marriage going south, certain editors, including a certain ban-evader, have used multiple opportunities to disparage Heard in particular on various YMMV pages.
  • Game of Thrones and its subpages: A certain editor with a hate on for Daenerys Targaryen has taken every opportunity to paint the character in a negative light, even beyond what is understandable. She has even gone so far as defending Dany's abusive brother.

I was going through Harley Quinn Is Great's edits to Alien Blood and I noticed a good chunk of them were crosswicking examples from their respective work pages. Some of the examples they crosswicked were originally written by other tropers. How do we handle those?

Those should probably be kept. Crosswicking is actually in the rules and in that case they were actually doing the correct thing.

Regarding Noldo's 3 Younger Than They Look edits, the first 2 should be left alone because she corrected factually wrong information, which I know because I'm familiar with Thrones. The third one has already been reverted.

42note  of Nerdanel Noldo's edits have been undone, but upon counting her edits, note  she made 44 edits. I do not know what the last 2 edits are. Furthermore, I don't think all the pages she edited are listed in Sandbox.Ban Evader Reversion. I'm too tired right now to do anymore reverts, recount the listed reverted edits, or pinpoint the exact pages that aren't on the list, so I'm just going to make a note in this thread for now and hope someone else steps in after me. I hope I'm wrong and all of her edits have been reverted, but I'm certain we still have 2 left.

[down]That page was not listed in the sandbox (I've since added it), and the edits have been reverted. I believe we got them all now.
