Wiki and Forum Policy - General Discussion

Go To

Note: The thread currently has a limit of one post every two hours for non-mod users. Currently, this is hard-coded by the admins, but there are plans to give mods the ability to toggle it without admin intervention. After mods are given the ability to do that, the time limit may be further reduced or removed entirely.

This thread is for discussing the following topics:

  • Questions and clarifications about the site's rules and policies pertaining to wiki editing, forum posting, trope launching, and so on.
  • If you have an idea for a thread on another part of the forums but aren't sure if creating it would be allowed, feel free to ask here.

This thread is not for any of the following:

  • Reporting complaints or concerns about specific moderation decisions (e.g. suspensions and thumps). Report these directly to the admins via the contact form. Selecting "The Staff" sends your message to the admins only, without making it visible to moderators.
  • Queries about thumps applied to your own forum posts (reply to the relevant moderator via PM).
  • Ban appeals (use the "Edit Banned" thread in this forum).
  • Reporting problems or requesting moderator action in the wiki or forums (use Ask The Tropers or Hollersnote  or specialized threads such as "Locked Pages").
  • Queries about locked On-Topic Conversations (OTC) threads or banned discussion topics. OTC has its own moderation discussion thread here, and the latest statement on the locked US Politics thread and other banned OTC topics is here. Bluntly, when certain OTC threads and topics have repeatedly caused problems, we're not going to provide forum space to discuss them again until the moderation toolkit is equipped to handle those conversations.
  • Cut List challenges and queries (they have their own thread here).
  • Requests for changes to the site's code or discussion about such changes', as mods cannot change the code; only the admins can do that. Please direct tech requests to Query Bugs or Query Wishlist, and take other tech-related discussion to the Changelog thread.
  • Crowner actions. Please use the holler function instead.
  • Discussion about changing or implementing policies. Please use Wiki Talk for that. (Asking whether it's OK to make a specific thread is acceptable; using this thread in place of such a thread is not.)
  • Asking about the whereabouts of inactive mods (or other inactive users) before they return, if they return at all. Use the Absent people thread for discussing inactive users.

Posts that use this thread in place of the sections listed in the bulleted list above are off-topic.
We're aware that the Edit Banned thread has a Non-Indicative Name, due to it also covering non-editing suspensions. We're not sure whether the name for that thread can even be edited without breaking the special coding that keeps posting restricted to mods and suspended users, so we're leaving it alone for now, because better safe than sorry.

Violating the rules of this thread is completely unrelated to violating the rules of some other thread. There is no recusal issue.

1. The moderator code of conduct clearly says it is site-wide

2. "Moderators will recuse themselves from mod action in any situation they are personally involved in" (emphasis mine)

[up]Why are you repeating this? This was already made clear. And Mrph1’s comment clearly explains why fighteer thumped some comments, he was the only mod around at the time. Further discussion about this isn’t productive.

As I just said, there is no place to discuss moderator actions. That’s just the way it is. If you aren’t a moderator, you aren’t allowed to discuss these things.

The administration is also the ones who place the moderators in power, not the users. WE trust them and that’s what matters. Just because they make a mistake or some users don’t like them doesn’t mean you’re allowed to break the rules or demand anything be done.

This is an absolutely abysmal policy to have if you wish the community to have any faith and trust in you.

Likewise 'if you have problems email us but we don't promise to address your concerns or even email back'.

What was allowed in this thread was changed because the admin promised to police moderators, this statement apparently rolls in back to "like it or lump it because we don't give a fuck".

You don’t have to like it. But you do have to follow the rules.

We also didn’t change what was allowed to please the users. The users obviously didn’t like the change but it’s what the administration wanted. I’m the lowest tier employee here and I don’t have a say in what gets changed either.

If you want to make sure someone responds in a meaningful way to every single email then thats taking away hours needed to be coding and doing actual projects for the site. But if you just want a “we’ve received your report” type of response that I can make sure that at least happens.

I don't want to seem accusatory or anything, so I apologize if I do, but tvtropes is both a wiki maintained almost entirely by user work and pulls volunteer mods from said userbase. It seems to me that that's a situation in which it does matter that the users trust the people in charge

It also seems necessary to note that people aren't inclined to trust the admins themselves. If people aren't getting helpful responses when issues are taken to the proper channels, well... naturally they're going to try again elsewhere. It's human nature. The rules are being followed to the best of everyone's abilities, but I think people have the right to ask what happens if the admins don't take action in a scenario that requires them.

You can trust that the company I work for will keep paying the bills to keep T Vtropes online. And if a moderator is causing more harm than good then yes they will be removed, but they don’t think that fighteer is at that point at this time.

~kory

I question that, given nearly every headache you guys have had to endure from this thread stems directly from some action of Fighteer's.

I've said it with every Fighteer fiasco, people who misbehave without consequence have no reason to stop misbehaving.

I genuinely have to ask: Is Fighteer worth it?

I already answered that question in my previous post. If fighteer hasn’t been removed yet, then the answer is obviously yes as of right now.

Alright I’m getting back to coding.

It’s been made clear more than once. This thread is for asking for clarification on policy, not debates, pot stiring, complaining or anything related to the mods beyond what’s already been asked about the mod code of conduct. If you don’t have questions about policy unrelated to the fighteer situation then you’re off topic for this thread. That situation has already been dealt with and policies related clarified. Nothing productive will come from continuing it.

A site policy question. We have a "no importing drama" policy which is self explanatory, is there and equivalent "no exporting drama" policy? Like, let's say megagutsmanand I go into it over Mega Man X, we get told to stop by the mods here, and one or both of us go offside to continue the behaviour is that something the mods would take action over? Or does it have to spill back over to this site to count?

Drama import and drama export are both covered by the forum rules. Both are prohibited, as you might expect.

Don't use our forums for a battleground, don't encourage or instigate others to use our forums as a battleground, don't use our forums as a launching pad for a fight, and don't drag us into a fight somewhere else

That's from the summary in the pinned post on the rules thread, but a longer explanation is here, later in the thread.

We reserve the right to take action based on drama exportation, but are not obligated to do so, and would only do it if there is clear and unambiguous evidence of the link between a TV Tropes account and an account on another site.

For example, we have in the past banned people over Discord behavior when provided with sufficient evidence. It has to be something worse than arguments over site policy, though... like exploitation of minors. Or, as noted in that rules post, inciting/provoking raids or vandalism on TV Tropes. That includes encouraging harassment or stalking of specific users or groups of users.

I suppose the bottom line is that if any user, mod or not, makes a comment of that nature, we should just holler them. This thread isn't about reporting individual mods or users.
