Needs Help: The Oughts

Should UsefulNotes.The Oughts be renamed to UsefulNotes.Turn Of The Millennium?

I find it confusing that it's named that way, and there's no Useful Notes for Turn of the Millennium and I usually click subpages on this... what do you call this?

Plus, what I heard, "Oughts" or "Aughts" is a British term, but I'm neither British nor American, and I usually use the 2000s for the decade. On TVW, I use the Turn of the Millennium.

This one seems obvious. The Main/ and UN/ pages should match, and "oughts" is specific to one variety of English. "Turn of the millennium" it is.

Cool. Anyone else cool with this?

I agree.

Personally, I'd rather have all of the decades be more clear in terms of their naming, while keep the old names as redirects: The 1980s, The 1990s, The 2000s, etc.

And don't forget, we're now three months away from having to create a new one of these.

Googling...

• the oughts: 439,000 results. Google says I can't spell and suggests correcting it to "aughts"
• the aughts: 744,000 results.
• 2000s: 10,640,000,000 results. There's probably some non-decade stuff in here. First results is 2000s (decade) Wikipedia entry
• 2000s decade: 394,000,000 results
• turn of the millennium: 99,400,000 results

It definitely should not be called The Oughts.

I agree. I checked and "ought" does not mean "zero"; "aught" is the correct word in that case. TRS previously renamed Millitary-Rank Superhero/villain Names and Role Reprisal due to a misspelling and word misuse, respectively (the new names are Military Rank Names and Role Reprise). That said, it does appear that calling the decade the turn of the millennium is more popular than calling it the aughts.

tl;dr version: "Oughts" is a misspelling of "aughts" in this case, so this page ought not be called The Oughts, regardless of whether we change it to The Aughts or Turn of the Millennium.

Edit: I checked again (I had only been up for a few hours when I originally wrote this post, and having a persistent headache isn't helping) and apparently "ought" is an alternative spelling of "aught", but based on the above post, it might be considered non-standard compared to "aught".

The Aughties I have seen the most used and would fit the rest of our names. The Eighties, The Nineties then The Aughties.

But according to Definition.net "The Noughties, The Aughts, The Aughties, The Oughties" are all used in various places.

Can't we just call it "The 00's" to keep it consistent with the other decades?

We would mistake that to the 1900s and the 2100s should this wiki remains up.

Can we go back to renaming the Useful Notes page to UsefulNotes.Turn Of The Millennium.

Aside from the alternative names, and renaming the other decades, which would be a topic on its own in this thread, anyone agree on renaming this to UsefulNotes.Turn Of The Millennium?

I would also prefer the 00's, for consistency with the rest of the decades. It can be pronounced as "the aughts" or "the 2000s" as preferred. Nobody calls the 1900's the 00's, so that overlap shouldn't be an issue.

Let's just call these pages The 1990s, The 2000s and so on. Much simpler.

Again, we have thread for the other decades, though it's mainly for cleanup.

I made a Single Proposition crowner to make it easier to gauge consensus. If consensus for this crowner is in favor of a rename, we can compile all the suggestions into an Alternative Titles crowner.

I've been for "The 2000s" since the very beginning. Not giving that up now.

For the sake of making it easier to access the subpage whenever you go from the Main/ page of the Turn of the Millennium, I'm going to pick UsefulNotes.Turn Of The Millennium.

That I support as a redirect, though.

Despite the 2000s having the most search results, I'm still going to stick to "Turn of the Millennium" for easy access and less of a confusion.

I mean, the Useful Notes of other decades pages go in sync with the Main decades pages.

Unless we rename the other decades pages that is, much like Brainulator has suggested, OR renaming them by their nicknames like The Bustling 1880s, The Gay '90s, The Edwardian Era, The Roaring '20s, The Great Depression, TheFightingForties, The Fabulous Fifties, and The Swinging Sixties.
