Outdated Administrivia Pages

Go To

This is a thread to discuss those Administrivia pages in need of a little updating- you know the ones. The ones that still cite rules we've long since changed, or the ones that don't properly cite our current standards. Some of them are even scattered in Main/!

So, this is the place to take those pages and fix them up with the help of the community.

For a list of current projects, see Outdated Administrivia Pages.

Note: This thread is not for asking mods to make one-off edits to Locked Pages, Administrivia-related or otherwise, such as requesting additions to an Example Sectionectomy index. Please use this thread for that.

Proposed wording based on the latest Unreleased Works crowner vote - this is for Creating A Work Page For An Unreleased Work.

  • Early access to new instalments or related works via a paid subscription (e.g. webcomics or songs released early to Patreon supporters) doesn't count as a release. This differs from normal early access as you can't buy a specific work or instalment — and the payments are intended as an ongoing commitment.

Look ok?

As it's been a few days and there were no concerns, the proposed changes to How to Create a Character Page (detailed here) and Troping Works Created in Other Languages (detailed here) have now been made.

Characters.Dragon Ball Frieza has been split into 2 sub-pages, so I was proposing to edit the Administrivia.Character Specific Pages to include Frieza's example in the Characters who have their own sub-pages.

Considering Character-Specific Pages was always a project list, that got recently upgraded into a policy page and locked, I feel the examples should be subsplit into another page so the cleanup can edit.

[up] Administrivia.List Of Character Specific Pages ?

There's been some offsite mod conversation about doing this more widely, but that probably goes beyond the scope of this thread - we've got Summary (e.g. Musicians), Sandbox (e.g. Unreleased Works) and Administrivia pages all listing pages for similar purposes, and it may be worth handling them all in the same way, in the same namespace.

(With things like Locked Pages remaining locked as Administrivia pages, though)

I overlooked the fact that Administrivia.Character Specific Pages doubles as a list of character-specific pages in addition to being a policy page, so no objections to spinning the list off into its own page. The previously mentioned title sounds fine.

I moved list of character-specific pages to Administrivia.List Of Character Specific Pages. It might need to be double-checked in case I missed anything, particularly because the original text of Administrivia.Character Specific Pages was split between the new page and the policy page. Both were also indexed on the Administrivia index.

Was there a talk about broadening American and Commonwealth Spellings to general "equally valid grammar types" or that suggestion didn't get past the idea phrase?

Renaming it to National Varieties Of English was also suggested, but since some of these differences can coexist within the same variety of English as each other (which is something that came up regarding "dialogue" vs. "dialog" in a TRS thread from a year or two ago), I wonder if English Spelling And Grammar Rules (or maybe just English Spelling And Grammar since the current name doesn't have the word "Rules" in it) would be a better name.

The suggestion was also to include not just types of English, but also punctuation rules that aren't universal like Oxford Comma and commas inside quotations, as well as some spellings that are regarded as equivalent, so people would be discouraged to "correct" them.

I'm wondering if Administrivia.First Come First Served would be a good idea, covering different versions of English, punctuation and some of the points raised in the translated works policy.

They all feed into the same approach, after all.

Having a dedicated Administrivia.First Come First Served page and folding the English policy page into it sounds like a good idea.

Given conversations elsewhere, I'd like to add a note to the end of How Crowners Work to say that we don't use Crowners for situations where anonymous voting can present problems. Specifically, not for:

Any concerns about this?

We do hook crowners to TLP to decide a name though if there's a request, or is it in the past?

TLP still get crowners on request (there's a thread on FAQ for it here) yes but consensus is a bit nebelous there because mods usually aren't to call crowners because well its not easy to monitor like threads crowners are . People are on TLP are usuallyleft figure it out on their own

It would also be a good idea to list the reasons crowners won't be done in each case.

In the main drop down index, the tips section of it has a Word Cruft link that should send you to the Word Cruft administration page but it instead sends you to the main Word Cruft page that no longer exists.
