Works for me as well. I also think Mario is well known enough for people to realise that he's not exactly portrayed like that now.

I would agree with 3 that OP needs a caption to sell the point.

[up][tup] to that

OP + caption will work. "Mario, before he became The Everyman hero."

EDIT: Or OP paired with an image of Mario looking a bit more jovial/heroic, like this.

On second thought, OP seems to show Art Evolution or Early Installment Character-Design Difference. Characterization Marches On implies a shift in character behavior. Is that coming out in OP?

[up]Yes, his design is different, but the important part is that he's abusing Donkey Kong, which is very unlike his current personality.

A second pic of them in their current relationship would help.

I'm fine with the OP.

You've got roaming bands of armed, aggressive, tyrannical plumbers coming to your door, saying "Use our service, or else!"

So, do we agree on my suggestion? What about a caption?

I'll go with the OP matched with a more modern take on Mario.

Harder than I thought it'd be to find a more modern take on them, but maybe OP combined with something like this?

There. Alternatively this for the lower image.

Still not sure it qualifies. If the point is that Mario's attitude now is contradictory to his early behavior, it should go under Early-Installment Weirdness (according to second paragraph on Characterization Marches On).

I think it's meant to be that Early-Installment Weirdness encompasses a shift in an entire work, as opposed to a single character, like the Characterization Marches On is.
