Mikael summoned his knife back to his hand and narrowed his eyes at the machine claiming to be Omega's mother.

"I already used my power today, but it worked on Omega. If she's fully robotic, we can restrain her until tomorrow and I can make her more... amicable, to talking. Or I can just drag her to the Abyss and dunk her head in magma until she talks." Mikael gave Joan a wicked smile as he twirled his knife. "Whatever works."

While Joan was still a bit under the weather, Arthur still couldn't help but be amused. "You can chop me to bits or do whatever else all you want. Why, I might even enjoy it! As they say, no pain, no gain! But that's not gonna get you what you want, now is it? Nor is picking apart my brain like dissecting a frog. Because as soon as you do, well, let's just say you're not gonna find much there. Same with Joan."

"Come on," said Omega, her gun still pointed at Arthur's limbs. "What's wrong with just telling me who made me? At least give me a name."

"No can do! Sides, don't think they'd like that too much. See, we're more or less puppets on a string. They say jump, we say how high. And if we really do something they don't like, well, it won't be pretty, let's put it that way. So what do you think's gonna happen to me if I cough up everything I know?"

"If that's the case, how come I wasn't built that way?"

"Simple! You were made to be as human as possible. Including complete autonomy. Mostly. We'd still send you the odd message now and then, but due to how you worked, it was never anything too complex. Think you did this, angst about that. And we'd never add anything fancy like a self-destruct. If you ever found out about that, that would've complicated things far more than whatever happened tonight, wouldn't it? Though that's as much as you're gonna get out of me. Less you want me and everyone else blown sky high."

"Always quick to quit that one..." Mahvash only did not shake her head at the snow leopard due to being focused on something else, the leverage that Arthur had just given them.

The daeva raised her hands, taking slow steps toward Arthur and Joan, and carefully folding spacetime around the others. "Be at ease, dear Arthur, you are delivered, even if that was not your intent."

Well, that wasn't true. She had no clue who if anyone was listening now and what their trigger point was, but reassurance. Hm.. about that. What yield is that explosion? And what is too much for them to 'cough up'? And how good is that signal, if they're really being watched/listened to? What's their response if the signal goes snowy or static-y. Well, I'll push the envelope by myself.

Via warp ring, Mahvash sent the others, within her ring, outside the Gym. "Too many cooks, you know."

The daeva lowered her arms, putting a hand on her hips and wagging a finger. "'Puppets on a string,' losing a head or some important guts at random." She whistled. "sounds very sad, although I bet that will make a lovely song. Anyway, my fellows are at an impasse, and though hearing them 'be mean' earlier was adorable, I want your attention now. I want to offer you comfort and time."

Mahvash stretched out her hands toward the android pair. "We don't know each other that well, but I'm clearly over hunting you down, what with you being tamed and collared already and reduced to pretend fearlessness. So, please give me your hands and stay tangible? I'll just make those bodies inert temporarily. I wouldn't have you outliving your usefulness before you can reconnect with your 'daughter' and I'd leave you're brains intact of course. You wouldn't feel a thing, and I work quickly. I will even smooth out those bad welds you're ashamed of in the mirror if you point them out. My fellows won't feel the need to condemn you to await a messy end in another dimension, and we stay the Q&A session and have an armistice. What say you?"

They did not know each other, but the daeva hoped that the pair got her meaning. Either they let her undo those whole bodies sans the brain 'to be sure', or, and more preferably, they subtly point out their collars/bad welds and the things disappear before they can detonate. And if things went really wrong, well, the others were out of the way. Maybe out of range.

"That bloody tease! I finally had a willing test dummy and she goes hogs all the fun for herself!" It came as no surprise to Hei that Jacob was annoyed by Matten's sudden teleport, and he quickly summoned a shadow wall to prevent Jacob from smashing his way back into the Gym. "Hei, what the fu-" Sparks crackled on top of his skin, before they were extinguished by a magic array that wrapped around him like a hoop. "Wet blankets, the both of you..." The blond grumbled, shooting a dirty look at Mei and Hei.

"Trust me, it's never a good idea to mess with Matten." Hei spoke, his face speaking volumes of his experiences with the Daeva's machinations. "She means well, but..."

"Indeed, the whims of a daeva are difficult for mortal minds to comprehend." The disguised yokai hummed as she dragged the disgruntled blond back to her side. "Young she may be, earning her ire unnecessarily is still foolishness of the highest caliber."

Jacob growled irritably, but stopped struggling in protest. "...Yes, mom." He muttered, earning a swat on the head from the lady (which he ignored). Turning to the umbrakinetic, he added, "You cost me something nice. It's gonna cost ya."

"Greedy psychotic... fine, what do you want from my stash?" Hei grumbled with the air of someone who was long used to such demands. He never liked parting with the things he acquired, though it was necessary when bargaining with his family. One man's treasure is another's fodder, as the saying went.

"I don't know...it's been a while since I saw ya, and this is a pretty swanky establishment. You must have laid eyes on some interesting trinkets during your stay."

"Rrr...fine." Hei caved in, before laying out his conditions. "You can pick three items for yourself, and no explosives."

"Deal!"

Hei nodded in confirmation before walking over to Lucy's side, posture slightly slumped. "I'm..sorry about Jacob's behavior." He apologized to the rest of the class. "He's a good person...m-most of the time, but he's...always been a little more impulsive than everyone else."

Gym

"Crap!" Rosa had been transported out of the gym with everyone else, all wondering what the hell was going on. She peered through one of the Gym's windows to make sure Mommy and Daddy weren't coughing up anything they weren't supposed to. Of all people, Matten was the only other person still left in the gym aside from the bots. She couldn't hear them, but she could still read lips and knew she was making them an offer they couldn't refuse.

This was bad. She couldn't take the risk they might actually talk or otherwise compromise their situation. Besides, what if they told Matten about her? She couldn't let that happen. If they knew she screwed up that bad, she could kiss her current self goodbye. There was only one thing for it. Besides, that no good hypocrite had it coming. They all did.

She moved away from the window and blended in with the crowd once again, making sure to move as far away from the gym as possible without being too conspicuous. She then spoke into the transceiver in her ear and, for all intents and purposes, ordered Joan and Arthur 's death sentence. "Mommy and Daddy. Code D: Detonate."

And then the whole building went sky high.

Gym → Outside

While Lucy was only mildly stumbled by Matten's transportation, the rest of her family seemed quite disoriented. Apparently Hannah and Jane had edged close enough to be transported, and the latter promptly searched for a place to sit down, her fatigue starting to catch up with her, Hannah quickly moving over in order to check on her, while David chose to lean up against a nearby wall, taking out his coin and flipping it absently in a clear attempt to calm his nerves somewhat.

The fact that a certain hooded smoker wasn't with them didn't help him very much.

Meanwhile, Lucy simply watched the interactions between Hei and his surrogate family with an almost morbid fascination, giving him a soft smile at his apology to the class for Jacob's attitude.

“W-well, I can't blame him for being impulsive, I'm not r-really that much better. Besides... he... he kinda reminds me of David,” she admitted quietly, glancing over to him only to double take at the look of sudden dread on his face, the coin freezing in mid-air.

“...D-David, what's-” was the only thing she could get out before the explosion erupted from behind her, both the shockwave and the sudden cacophony knocking her off of her feet. Hannah immediately gripped Jane (who had taken the initiative to tightly cover her ears) in an attempt to secure her from suffering the same fate, while David's very form seemed to disintegrate, unmaking itself as he shifted into pure zero-point energy.

As the explosion died down, Lucy groaned, her ears faintly ringing as she pushed herself back up onto her feet. David soon rematerialized in a crackle of energy, walking forward a couple of paces to look at the sight of the explosion.

After a short period of time staring in shock at the destruction, his fists clenched by his sides, a few tears rolling down his face.

“...D-Dad...”

Gym

As the dust settled in what was left in the gym, it became obvious that there was a survivor. Up against one of the partially obliterated walls was a large chunk of volcanic rock, an orange glow visible through the overlapping cracks in its surface.

Gradually, it began to crumble away, the large sheets of slate sliding to the side and shattering against the floor. A bony hand fumbled its way out of the rock cocoon, eventually gripping the edge of one of the remaining panels and pulling itself out.

The wiry man coughed violently, looking mildly singed but otherwise none the worse for wear, thumping his chest to clear his throat of any remaining dust particles before straightening himself and surveying the site.

“...Well, #$&%,” he cursed spitefully, stalking over to the centre of the explosion and kicking a charred piece of chassis over and over with his foot. “#$&% you, #$&% you, #$&% you, #$&% you...”

His rage slowly venting, he finished it by raising his foot for a final crushing stamp, only for it to rapidly expand into a blackened rocky mass and slamming down heavily onto the already mangled pile of metal with all the force of a refrigerator being dropped from a skyscraper.

“#$&%. You.

Sam just sighed as he got teleported outside. It's unlikely one could get answers from them anyway.

"Is everyone outside?" He asked, looking at the group, alongside everyone Chris got out during the fight. Hopefully, things got back to normal.

Until an explosion rocked the world and sent him to the floor. But that wasn't the worst part.

Sam's new ears were completely overwhelmed by the explosion, and the ringing coming later. His mind shut down, as he curled down as his hands went to cover his ears, his expression frozen in shock.

Caleb and Harmony were both pretty shocked as they got teleported outside. Caleb was kind of relieved but Harmony considerably less so.

"Nooo! We have to stop them properly!"

She didn't have a plan for how to do that, given that they really needed to obtain information rather than deal more damage, but she didn't have time to come to that conclusion before the gym exploded.

As the shockwave spread, a large shield automatically deployed from Overload's armour. Moments later he dove in front of Caleb, though a little to late to completely shield him. As Caleb picked himself up off the floor, Ace looked at him and forced a grin, even though his faceplate was still up.

"You ok, kid?"

Caleb just stared blankly for a few seconds before responding.

"...Sure."

Caleb looked around as he got his bearings and caught sight of Sam writhing on the floor. An idea occurring to him, he walked over and knelt down next to him. Ooze filled both his palms as he held them out towards Sam's ears and started absorbing the sound, creating a sort of bubble of silence. It wouldn't stop the damage that was already done but it could maybe calm him down a bit.

Gym-Ruins

"Language..." Mahvash admonished the wiry man though it came out slightly gurgly. She gave only mild attention to his show. "And you should not be here." One could see on the daeva Blood from the Mouth, strands of fabric on her skin that may never have been any color but ash grey, and singed and blistered skin but part the course for being at the center of that boom and rather exposed.

Nonetheless, she kept her posture, flying through a wall or three aside. Her aura undid debris and over-pressure, and wisps took out the wall behind her to send her flying rather than have the body she had just made sit and take the whole thing. At the very least, she didn't have to snap her limbs back into place after this explosion.

"Le sigh," The daeva put a hand on her hips, shooing wire-guy away with hand and wolf-head shaped tendrils of hair "Armada and whatever bomb specialists this school has will want to see this scene, find out what device was used, see perhaps where this material came from and whatever else they can find. Plus, bombs aren't perfect. There may be undetonated ordinance, especially with so much of their bodies remaining. You may get her. Begone." The daeva folded space around the hall in a large wave, warp ringing him and anyone in the way off. Had nothing to do with how you feel like Lucy and the rest of the Brady Bunch, but go see about them anyway.

"Well," she leaned against the wall where she emerged, lightly feeling out the area. "You two didn't exactly accept my offer of protection. All the same, you were in my custody, and I don't know what effect this will have on Omega." She gave the debris of Joan and Arthur a once over. "I thought of taking your heads and undoing those bodies, but meh, something for the future, and I'll have a nice reason to do it too. For now, I suppose I can watch over your remains."

She made a phantasm head and sent it outside with a simple message before disappointing, Get Armada. She had given the same task to Hot Wire, but he didn't look all that suitable. If she or anyone can even determine whether the signal for that detonation was long or short ranged that information would help narrow things down immensely.

Gym - Ruins

Mikael had been prepared to try and tele-swipe the robot parents to the Abyss, hoping perhaps that it would put them out of the manipulation range of their mysterious 'superiors', but Matten beat him to the punch by teleporting everyone else out of the Gym.

Annoying, but given that the robots had self-destructed literally right after she did, it was probably for the best.

He popped back into the Gym to make sure Matten hadn't bit it - she was probably fine, but a demon man could dream - and waved a clawed hand to her as she sent out her phantasm.

"I'll grab Armada. Be right back."

Armada's Lab

He reappeared, not five minutes since he'd left, and offered a hand to Armada.

"Hello again. I'm not sure if you heard the explosion here, but uh - Omega's 'parents' self-destructed and took out the Gym. I think Matten may have found some scrap from them, or something - she wants you to take a look at it."

He offered his hand to teleport her back.

Gym/Outside

The man gave the daeva a dirty look as she shooed him along, but nonetheless complied, letting the volcanic substance revert back into his leg and lighting a cigarette with his finger.

“Yeah, I know how bombs work, thank you,” he muttered with barely suppressed irritance. “Sell the #$&%ing things and still people treat you like you're a #$&%ing idiot with 'em...

He paused as she finished her instructions, raising a questioning finger only to suddenly find himself outside. Grumbling under his breath, he whirled around on his heel and trudged over to where the evacuees were, shaking off any disorientation from Matten's rather unorthodox transportation methods in the process.

“'You may get her.' Would help if I knew who 'her' was. #$&%ing simpleton...”

He trailed off from his quiet ramblings as he passed by the shocked David, who was staring up at him with tear tracks staining his cheeks. Briefly looking him up and down, he snorted, flicking his oddly rapidly burnt out cigarette onto the ground and crushing it underfoot, leaving the teen only a simple two word comment before he continued his trek.

“Man up.”

His steps began to slow the closer he got to Jane, his gaze straying to Lucy and Hannah with a hint of what might have been regret before he felt a sting across his cheek, Jane having stalked right up to him and viciously slapped him across the face while he was distracted.

He stumbled back a little from the shock, before swiftly recovering and immediately fishing around for another cigarette, earning himself a glare from the woman in the process.

“Well that's a fine hello,” he commented.

“Why are you here?”

He scoffed. “What, I can't say hi to my kids once in a while?”

“No. Not on your terms, from what I can gather. You don't actually care, do you? If you did, they'd know you,” she spat back, motioning to the stunned David and Lucy and not even bothering in hiding the sheer spite in her voice.

“I do care,” he muttered quietly. Jane just let out an incredulous half laugh at that, quirking an eyebrow as if to challenge him.

“Oh really? Where have you been then?”

“Busy,” he growled, tugging out his cigarette and gripping it tightly between his fingers as his frustration began to build up further. “Very busy.”

“Busy enough not to care, Lucius?”

The cigarette snapped.

“Don't...” he hissed, before squeezing his eyes shut and shaking his head back and forth, backing a pace away from her and forcefully slowing his breathing. “...Don't... test me.”

Unamused, Jane crossed her arms, shifting protectively in front of their three children and briefly looking back at them. Lucy was on the brink of tears, David was mostly unreadable, barring the fact that his clenched fists were almost drawing blood at this point, and Hannah's overtly enthusiastic sense of presence had devolved into an aura of darkened, disappointed melancholy, sending a wave of depression out towards any of those standing near her.

Feeling her husband's lingering gaze on them, Jane turned back around, before addressing him in a flat monotone.

“If that's all you came for you got it. Now go.”

He started, but the deepening of Jane's glare at his hesitation gave him pause.

“Go.”

He promptly spat on the ground at her feet, throwing the two halves of his cigarette into the earth furiously before whirling around.

“#$&%. You.

With that, he stormed off, disappearing out of sight and into the crowd. After a minute or two, there was what sounded like crumbling rock, and a decidedly larger silhouette rocketed off the ground into the distance with a powerful jump, the shattering crashes of his consecutive leaping gradually fading away with him.

Jane watched him the whole way, before sighing to herself and moving to sit down, placing her head in her hands. Hannah soon joined her, leaning into her shoulder with an unusually numb expression on her face.

David was too young to remember him. Lucy was only a fraction more knowledgeable, perhaps even being able to recall a blurry caricature of the man. But Hannah was old enough to have had seared every second of Lucius's presence into her brain before he had left them.

Why else would she have elected to continue be happy, despite all odds, if only for the others? Who else, even, if not Hannah?

Gym: Rubble

“Well that was something.” Came the gruff voice of Garret as he stood among the ruined gym without a scratch...no, a more accurate description would be that he stood in the rubble, his now-translucent figure phasing through the dust and debris like it wasn’t even there. He followed the other, more abrasive man out of the gym and stood a short distance away from Hei and Lucy’s family. Judging by the expressions of the lady and her children, it seemed to be a family spat.

Meanwhile, Hei just looked on with a mixture of concern for his girlfriend and wariness at the man who was Lucy’s father. Once the man left, Hei nervously glanced at the tearful Lucy, before slowly wrapping an arm around her shoulder.

I don’t know if this helps, but I’m here for you.

Gym—Ruins

"Why did you save them?" The double of the wiry man experimentally shifted his arm into magma in a sliding ring, even while keeping his face hidden and giving himself a tight hug. "Had those tin men detonated here with all those juicy bits present, well, that would've been like the dupes giving you a fruit basket."

"That's my job here?" Mahvash never left her perch at the wall to look at him, redundant though it would've been. Fair's fair. He stood faced away from her too. "The whole is greater than the sum of its parts, and they're mine." She raised her hands in a small gesture of supplication. "Respectfully, I mean, your honor."

"I could have come up with that." Yes Mahvash flinched back when Areshko appeared nose-to-nose with her. That was plain survival instinct, and she would not fight that. The elder daeva managed to lean in further while still avoiding her eyes. He traced a finger around her head. "What else?"

The younger daeva tilted her head. "...I understand that you didn't have the time for this. What do I owe the honor?"

Areshko mirrored her movement—after taking the shape of Cinnamon Roll. Of all People... "I can multitask." She twiddled her thumbs, failing miserably to hide a blush and a small smile. "And I do get curious, especially for innovations. Playing house isn't the first thing I imagined, but motherly love coming from you is quite the curiosity. Especially when my line gets to be at the cutting edge." She tapped a finger on the younger daeva's nose before vanishing.

"...I don't love anyone." Mahvash threw up her hands at the empty air. Could at least tell me if mom and pop made it safely to whatever safe house they had prepared for this visit. I guess I'll get a call.

Mikael and Armada reappeared in the ruins. He saw someone talking to Matten, only to disappear. A relative of hers? He supposed that if she'd survived this long, it stood to reason that other daeva would be around as well. Now I wonder what Angra Mainyu is like.

"Well, here we are. Fortunately Matten got everyone out of the Gym before the bomb went off."

He paused, looking back towards the entrance of the Gym, almost worried. He reassured himself that grandfather had left before the fighting started, and that his mother could just warp away. They were fine. Physically, anyway, emotionally... well. He still needed to get them to reconcile at some point.

Armada whistled as she got a good look at the gym. Or rather what used to be the gym. "They really did a number on it this time. Gonna take a whole week to make a new one. Anyway, let's see what we got here." She went over to the remains of Arthur and Joan and took out a small, wirey device almost like a magic wand. "Sonic screwdriver. Cribbed it straight from Doctor Who. Still working on a functioning TARDIS, but I think I'm just about there." She held the device over their remains. Her eyes began to rapidly flicker on and off as though streams of data were being sent to her brain. Only when they started to slow down did she finally have a decent grasp at what was going on.

"Okay. Still gonna have to do a proper exanimation later, but as far as I can tell, those two aren't dead. Seems like their data cores got transferred right before they denoted. They're probably waking up in new bodies somewhere as we speak."

Omega breathed a sigh of relief or at least made the attempt. "Thank God. Do you know where they might've gone?"

"No clue. What I do know is that they didn't blow up on their own. Someone sent them a detonation signal. And as far as I can tell..." She moved her wand around the room like a metal detector. It blinked slower and faster depending on where she aimed it, almost as if sniffing something or someone out. "...whoever sent it is on school grounds. Might even be right in the crowd. That said, this thing isn't perfect. Unless it's plain as sin who did it, it's gonna take a while to figure out who's the culprit. Unless anyone's got any ideas?"

Outside Ground Zero

Still in shock, Lucy didn't initially seem to register Hei's presence, before she gradually began to realise his attempted comfort and leaned back into him with a solemn expression on her face, resting her head in the crook of his neck and unknowingly mirroring her sister's current state in the process.

As what had just happened slowly started to sink in, she realised why Jane had been so determined to get her to be a hero following the incident. Despite not knowing the full details, most importantly that of the deaths, she had clearly pegged onto the severity of the situation nonetheless, enough to feel an urge to protect and help her daughter to move past it.

Lucius, from what little she had seen of him, seemed to be very familiar with his powers, and their manifestation must have made the already severely stressed woman increasingly overwhelmed.

No wonder Jane had been so emotional regarding it. The thought of losing someone else to their own abilities would have sifted up these already raw experiences with her husband.

It was at this point Lucy clicked to the fact that she was just thinking for the sake of thinking, and promptly forced herself out of it. The sudden lack of distraction meant that the emotional backlash caught up with her in an instant, however, and before she knew it she was already shedding quiet tears.

Damn it. Damn it all. Damn her crying. Damn her stammering. Damn this pileup of depression that seemed to just follow her and her family around. Damn just whoever Sardar was for starting all this. Damn the so-called 'Entity' and her selfish inability to accept her own mistakes. Damn the ones who kept turning what should be mundane into horror shows of life and death. Damn every single thing that she despised.

She was absolutely sick of it. Right now, the only things that were keeping her going was her family, her class, her promise to Jane to help others, and Hei. That was it.

But perhaps that was all she needed for now. She wouldn't let this overcome her permanently. No way in hell. As long as she kept herself going, she knew she'd be able to bounce back.

She just had to hope that she'd bounce back right.

''Did I go deaf?" He wondered, until he saw Caleb doing something to him. Deciding to not to question it, before trying to get up, but tumbled a bit as if his legs were made of jell-o.

"Stupid cat ears" He felt himself moving his mouth, but didn't hear his own mumbling, as he felt somewhat disoriented. A step forward, some stumbling and he was considering using ice bracers or something.

All of that went through his mind, he felt something drip from his head, his hand went to his head, and realized there was blood.

"Not again" He groaned. Looking at Armada, he decided to simply write the message with big letters.

FOR WHAT IS WORTH I THOUGHT I HEARD A FEMALE VOICE GIVING ORDERS IT WAS NOT VERY CLEAR WITH ALL GOING ON SOUNDED FAMILIAR THOUGH.

Gym—Ruins

"Yes, they said that another party controlled their self-destruction," Mahvash gave Armada a brief Old Persian salute, "I'll see about a search party and a lockdown." warp skipping past debris and fully warp ringing to where she'd sent the others outside. "The Xerox of Ultron have back up bodies and only gave me two, and their puppeteer is accommodating enough to stay on school grounds."

The daeva found Omega's reaction to the news of the 'parents' that she'd just denounced among other hiccups that night peculiar, but, probably just artifacts.

Outside Gym

"Oh, Cinnamon Roll..." Mahvash gave a flat look down at Lucy ...doing Lucy. That's quite the leaky pair of eyes. "Well one has to account for that. Lin, Samuel—when you're done with that, guests, our other guest with the explosive collar remains on school grounds. Corral this crowd and help Armada pick them out. Or do something immediately. Don't let them escape." Armada had the device, though she would not highlight that, and the others could look for psychosomatic tics.

The daeva ascended, scanning the area for anyone who'd left the main crowd of people. "By the way, the Beavertons are still alive. Like Ultron but stingy with the bodies they offer me."

Outside Gym

Caleb stared as Sam took an alternative method to communication and stopped absorbing the sound; hopefully it was past the point of causing any hearing trauma.

"Uh... you ok there? You should probably see the nurse."

Ace perked up as Armada did her research.

"Ooh, I can check my suit recording!"

Ace hesitated for a second. Anyone listening carefully might hear the noise of the chaos coming from inside his helmet, followed by a disappointed sigh.

"...That's nothing."

Gym

"An inside job?" Mikael pondered Armada's words. It was somewhat... convenient, that his Opa had left right before the fighting started. But no, if his grandfather had been involved, the robots probably would have attacked his mother.

"I'll keep the crowd from dispersing." He decided, before following Matten outside.

Gym Ruins

Mikael appeared behind the throng of people, carefully scoping out anyone who didn't belong. Unfortunately, there were enough people from outside his class there that no one immediately stuck out to him. Nonetheless, he kept an eye out to make sure no one escaped or tried to leave.

What is so amusing about this? Why do you take lives? How can you forget?

Sam had been kind of deaf when Matten arrived, so he was kind of ignorant on what she said. But it wasn't needed as the guests got surrounded by ice walls, sturdier looking than anything Sam had made to that point, as Chris arrived limping.

"If any of you can fly, it would be great if you could check if anyone tried to sneak away" The older man said "We'll have tougher luck if someone decided to teleport away in the middle of all the chaos"

Sam's hearing came back, causing him to flinch, and the headache remained, with his ears still ringing. He only nodded to Caleb's suggestion, but he wanted to end this. His dad walked up to help him, but he held out a hand to keep the distance.

"They had back up bodies?" Chris frowned "This is gonna be tricky"

Sam heard that, and nearly laughed at the revelation.

"We really had nothing" He said "In the end, only we were ever in risk to lose"

Outside Gym

Mahvash growled before sending a 'less than lethal' look that would kill just under Samuel, wearing away at the earth. "That light a fire under you, dearie? I assure you, I'll cradle you and rock back and forth and sing a nice Nursery Rhyme. Your turn shall come right after Lucy. Here and now...?"

The daeva folded her arms, still glowering, "Jump to something that's not some version of moaning 'the end is nigh'. Decide that's your calling, and I'll help you make a sign and tell you if I ever plan on it later. For now," She raised her hand, counting off on her fingers. "...an ice bench? A nice paddy wagon for unfamiliar people, so we can process them quickly? A perimeter wall? An ice figurine show to calm the guests we suddenly told cannot leave here? Help me ask people what they saw before the gym went boom?"

Mahvash put a finger to her chin, momentarily coming down from her scowl. "Our trigger puller was probably not frolicking with the others but was watching. A wallflower? A caterer, 'beneath notice'? Think on that, and don't outlive your usefulness."
