The current image is okay, but I think that it could be better illustrated by showing a man getting killed by the Death Ray. I have an image here

That's not bad, but it may overlap too much with Disintegrator Ray. The current was chosen by Eddie back in '13 over this:

[up]That overlaps with Wave-Motion Gun. Both that and Disintegrator Ray are said to be variants.

I think the OP suggestion works. Can't tell if he's disintegrating or burning up rapidly.

So what's the difference between all those tropes? I see the Death Star being mentioned on Wave-Motion Gun as well as Death Ray.

Wave-Motion Gun is Death Ray but scaled up to city and planet destroying levels. When a Wave-Motion Gun is fired everyone within a 100 miles takes notice and/or is obliterated.

At its smallest I think would be the biggest of the big guns carried by Humongous Mecha like Wing Zero's Twin Buster Rifle in Gundam Wing.

The examples could use some better sorting.

[up] Nothing in that suggests "death."

The OP option's text creates the impression that it relies upon the text. Here it is without the text.

It shouldn't require death though, also that one looks like Disintegrator Ray.

EDIT: in fact all of them look like that

The laconic makes reference to it being a ray gun that kills. But assuming the laconic is unfitting, and non-lethal examples also count, let me rephrase that.

Your option shows the energy beam, but it doesn't show that the energy beam causes physical harm. It could even be physically helpful, for all anyone looking at it out of context knows.

The current options aren't perfect (and I'm not sure yet what to suggest as an alternative; probably should've gotten involved in this thread before I saw a crowner) but they at least indicate a relationship between the energy beam and physical harm.

EDIT: As if on cue, I thought of something, but it's a non-lethal example, and out of context I'm not sure if it could be mistaken for being exclusively an Agony Beam.

Ok with Ray Gun and Disintegrator Ray existing, do we even need this one?

[up][up] Still doesn't demonstrate physical harm.

As for the other post, are you referring to its tropeworthiness? I think that's more of a matter for TRS.

9.1 and 9.2 look like they're just Ray Guns (and the image on Ray Gun doesn't help with that).

Moreover, the trope description does make it clear that whatever is hit by this ray gets killed: "In function it's a Ray Gun that causes death ... whatever the ray hits, dies — instantly and without question."

Very well, then.

What about this from VG Cats? Have I permission to add it to the crowner?

I'm beginning to think that almost anything suggested will illustrate a subtrope. Should this be BUPKIS?

[up][up] Not sure, but a lot of images that demonstrate one trope will inevitably demonstrate another in the process.

[up] Added to the crowner, then.

I've added a new option to the crowner —since so many of the options have clear overlap with more specific subtropes, I'm thinking we should just BUPKIS Death Ray and make sure the subtropes have good pics.

Calling the crowner. The pic's pulled and the page is tagged; I'll add it to the BUPKIS list shortly. Locking up.
