Has there ever been a video game character you loved that most consider to be The Scrappy? Or maybe you have your own Scrappy that most others tend to adore? Share your thoughts here and please explain why. Note, please avoid characters that are deliberately meant to be a Base Breaker.

I'll start us off with one of each. I really have a lot of respect for Maven Black-Briar from The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. People tend to despise her for her bossy, high and mighty attitude, as well as being a Karma Houdini in general. Personally, I grew up watching a lot of mafia-related movies and shows, such as Casino, Goodfellas, and Scarface. And just a few months ago I finished watching The Sopranos. What I'm getting at is that Maven is really just a mob boss if you think about it, and so she has to give off that constant air of authority. Trust me, if Maven was the Villain Protagonist of the story, with no change in personality, I bet players would love her.

Now if there is one super popular character that I can't stand, it would easily be Liara T'Soni from Mass Effect. I will admit that my first reason for her is mainly due to a bug that pretty much forces you into a romance with her if you aren't careful. Even ignoring that, something about Liara was always... disturbing in the first game. I'm still not sure what it was. In Mass Effect 2, I could not stand her forced attempt to act tough. Don't get me wrong, I like a tough girl, but Liara was just trying way too hard. Plus her extremely breathy voice got on my nerves. So far you may think my reasons may sound petty, but Mass Effect 3 is where I can give a genuine argument. I swear that everyone on the Normandy keeps acting like Liara is the only victim. Asari are being turned into Reaper slaves just like everyone else? "Poor Liara shouldn't have to see this!" But the worst for me is Liara's It's All About Me attitude after the Thessia mission. Liara goes into this huge depression and acts like she's the only one who lost anything; bare in mind that both Earth and Palaven have been under Reaper invasion for months now, and yet Liara seems ready to give up when Thessia gets invaded. Yeah, bitch, this is what happens in a war, do you see the others moping in self-pity? Lastly, if you have Javik in the crew, she acts like everything is his fault, saying "You're a prothean! You're supposed to have all the answers!" Really, Liara? I think this comic sums up the flaw in that logic.

Hoooooooo...boy.

I will say that Zoey from Left 4 Dead is absolutely overrated. It doesn't help that she suffers from Artificial Stupidity.

How many posts will it be before this gets locked?

[up] I think you got the premise of the thread backwards.

But yeah, this has the potential to go horribly wrong, especially if people start arguing. We need to be careful. (Heck, I won't be surprised if this thread gets locked by a mod before the first page is even finished.)

But for one of my own examples that I can think of off the top of my head, I honestly don't mind Birdo. Maybe it's just that I find her Gonky design endearing instead of ugly.

Well I remember there being a similar thread on video games in general, so I don't think a thread about characters should be a problem.

I don't know if the "vice versa" bit is a good idea, because it basically turns the thread into a complaint thread.

It's already a complaint thread either way. Even without the "vice versa", the basic premise is complaining about other people's opinions.

I'd have to think really hard for someone I hate that most people like, but as for the other way around: Tingle.

No, not his endearingly odd Majora's Mask incarnation, I mean his asshole money sink Wind Waker incarnation. The reason why I like him is simple enough- I think he's a funny character just for how much of a sleazewad he is.

The title did say vice versa.

I wasn't annoyed by Tricky from Star Fox Adventures, given that he was pretty full throughout my entire playthrough (seriously, it's not hard to find those mushroom grubs).

I also wasn't annoyed by Tingle in The Windwaker, although that might have to do something with me only playing the remastered version, which has a higher Rupee cap and less Rupee gouging from Tingle. I can see why people could despise him in the original release, but I wasn't too inconvenienced by his Rupee laundering thing.

It's still a complaint thread because the premise is "other people don't like this character". So no, we won't be permitting this.
