It seems as though the tropes are similar to one another—they are larger than life, and make even the most mundane of tasks seem amazing. Can you tell me the difference between them?

Courtesy links: Hot-Blooded, Large Ham.

Edit: Funny, I would have said before reading the former that they were entirely distinct. Now, though, I'm not sure. The thing is that I am certain that Hot-Blooded is getting misused all over the wiki for its colloquial meaning: "quick to anger".

Large Ham can be any kind of emotion. Hot-Blooded is about passion, joy, anger and any kind of "hot" emotions.

We don't need justice when we can forgive. We don't need tolerance when we can love.

Large Ham doesn't even have to be about emotional response. It's more about performance level. It doesn't have to be to something emotional. Someone going into raptures about how good their sandwich tastes is being a Large Ham about it, but that doesn't make them Hot-Blooded.

Large Ham is about being BIG, not just fiery.

Robin Williams and Jonathan Winters were both Large Hams, but not particularly Hot-Blooded;

Gordon Ramsay is both a Large Ham and Hot-Blooded,

Creator/Joe Pesci's character in Goodfellas is Hot-Blooded but not a Large Ham about it.

It doesn't help that the page image on Hot-Blooded seems more like an illustration of Large Ham.

But yeah, Hot-Blooded is about intensity of emotion; Large Ham is about extremes of expression.

It may help to understand that the term "ham" started out (a long time ago) as a term for an actor who over-exaggerated everything. The phrase "ham it up" still means "to overact". Hamminess is generally associated with humor (when it's not associated with bad acting), while hot-bloodedness is found in all types of fiction.

Speaking words of fandom: let it squee, let it squee.

Sooo, Hot-Blooded is associated with being fiery and passionate and Large Ham is about being big and expressive?

Large Ham is about overacting essentially, any type of overacting.

Hot-Blooded is about burning with passion, like so fired up you are literally on fire or have flames in your eyes. Currently I think the image on this page is misleading.

[up]No, Absolutely not. Hot-Blooded is NOT about being literally on fire or having flames in your eyes. That is a complete mischaracterizion of it.

[up][up] Yes. That's it. You can be a Large Ham without being passionate about anything. You can be Hot-Blooded without being a Large Ham about it.
