Can we just go ahead and cut Characters.Chess at least?

Oh god. I don't want to cut all the subpages. (For one thing, some of them refer to the Musical.) But the characters page is awful! Full of ridiculous shoehorning. Can I add an option to just cut that page?

(I do think we should scan it in case it has a valid trope or two that isn't currently on the main page or the sandbox. But that shouldn't take long.)

You can add an option, although I think that this crowner is superfluous.

Ok, added the option (since "cut all subpages" looks like it's going down).

Also, finished scanning the characters page, and found some possibilities. I think this one is good (rewrote the description myself):

  • Mechanically Unusual Fighter: The knight's movement of exactly two squares seems limiting, especially since it's the only piece which cannot capture an adjacent piece, but the odd pattern of its movement means it is the only piece which can threaten a queen without being threatened in return, and its ability to leap over pieces means it's the only piece which can checkmate a king behind a wall of his own pieces.

This one is ok, I think. (Again, I rewote it.)

  • That One Rule: The "en passant" move of the pawn is the most frequently overlooked or forgotten rule in the game. The fact that allowing your piece to be captured en passant doesn't even help with a sacrifice play means it almost never comes up in games between experienced players. And for a newbie, thinking that you can move your piece to safety, only to discover that it's not actually safe, can be extremely frustrating.

This one I'm not sure about, but I'll toss it out for discussion. (This one I didn't rewrite).

  • Back-to-Back Badasses: While a Bishop is usually only as strong as a Knight due to being restricted to only one color of the board, having the Bishops pair (when the opponent doesn't) gives a great advantage by covering the whole board, as they're stronger than Rook and pawn, can hold their own against a Queen by building a fortress with the help of pawns in some situations, have good coordination to help pawns promote, and can mate the King (two Knights can't do that.)

I just looked at the sandbox and I must say, it's miles better than what the page looked like before y'all started working on it. Good job.

I'm voting against "create a useful notes page", not because I think there's something wrong with the idea of having a useful notes page on chess, but because I think it's silly to insist that someone else be required to provide this page on demand!

TRS has a bad habit of ignoring all the work that's required to accomplish some ideal solution. If we're not going to move the page to useful notes, then I think the whole issue of whether we "should" have a useful notes page is beyond the scope of what TRS can or should address.

Same, and voted the same way.

Ok, I removed the "shoehorned/misuse" tropes from the sandbox page, since it looks like we're going to use that. We still have a handful of tropes left in the "uncertain" category, though, and we should probably make a final decision before resolving this.

My suggestion is that any trope which doesn't have someone speak up for it soon should be dumped. (And if someone does speak up, we can debate it—though if no one opposes the motion, we should probably keep it.) So, in light of that, I'll speak up for: One-Hit-Point Wonder, and I'm on the fence about Character Death.

Calling the crowner in favor of options in the green. Let's get to it.

Characters.Chess added to the cutlist. One item down, 3 to go.

Fixes from the sandbox implemented. As for the remaining two (create new pages), as I said before, I don't believe they're within the scope of repair shop. Someone who didn't vote against them on that basis is welcome to do the necessary work.

It's been ten days. And as mentioned before, adding these new pages is really beyond the scope of repair (although it's fine that we've ruled that they will be allowed). Motion to close the thread, without prejudice against crazysamaritan's plans to make the extra pages at his leisure.

Crown Description:

Chess is a game without story/narrative, and much of the tropes about it are either speculation or blatant shoehorns. We have discussed in TRS several options. The options are usually not exclusive, so feel free to vote up/down several different ideas. If tabletop is not cut, but the sandbox fails to gain consensus, it is approval of the current tropes.
