Yuri!!! On Ice

Everything! Is! Beautiful! The skating animation, the O ST, the OP and ED, the characters (Both in terms of how they act, and how they look, from the attractive male designs to various female designs, from the MILF-esque Ballet teacher to the punk older sister to the sweetheart Childhood friend, to even the cute chubby mom. Hell, even the female skater that had a few seconds of screen time looked hot).

My face was melting from it all. Oh yeah, This is a follow.

Also, Victor is one the sexiest Men In all of anime, I'm calling it now.

Its the name of The main character and a blonde rival of his, no actual Yuri Genre (More closer to Yaoi Genre, really) is here.

Someone in the staff had to have been snickering when they heard the title.

Sayo Yamamoto previously made Michiko And Hachin and Lupin III The Woman Called Fujiko Mine, so she probably was too respected for being snickered at.

If I'm recalling correctly, the name Yuri and Yuri Genre Yuri are written and pronounced differently, so there was definitely no confusion there. I think the only confusion for the series came from everyone out here instead of Japan.

That said, I'm just glad this sports anime is focusing on a group of adults (and a teen) and they're actually in the national competition from the start. Even though Yuri kind of hits the notes for the baby-faced protagonist, it's still a little refreshing.

And I agree. Everyone is gorgeous in this series. I dare say even Jun Fukuyama's character is cute to some extent. It's definitely a feast for the eyes. I just hope Mappa can keep up this quality, because I remember someone coming back from the prescreening saying Episode 3 looked a little static.

The title is written Yuuri! in Japanese. At least in the opening credits.

Anyway, figure skating. The only Olympic sport I've ever enjoyed watching. Show seems good too.

I have to admire not just the high level of animation (hope it doesn't drop too much after the premiere) but the good use to which they put it. The idealised, handsome skaters were done at Kyon-Ani level, but there were also moments of looser, cartoonish movement in dialogue scenes, something that many studios seem to forget.

The opening song was definitely a j-pop melody, but the singing sounded a little different than usual. Can't quite tell why, maybe the pitch was lower.

Only shortcomings: everyone is already so skilled that it's difficult to appreciate the effort they make; a few moments of clumsiness could have helped. And some character designs are consistently idealised, while others are consistently cartoonish, to the point that they don't look like the same show. But I might actually follow this.

Sweet, Yuuri on Ice is good. Cannot wait to go home and watch it

Yes, I am still bitter that this is not about ice lesbians.

I didn't plan on watching this, but it's the most lauded anime of the season, so maybe I will? We'll see.

Victor is God, Yuri 2 is a little shit, this show is pretty and I can't wait

I'd be lying if I said there wasn't homoeroticism, but it's really not the point of the show so far. It's about a washed up 23 year old figure skater who basically seems to feel like he devoted his life to skating but never really got anything out of it. He fell into a rut of being good enough to get into competitions (like, real professional competitions) but not good enough to win, or even stand out. The female childhood friend who got him into skating in the first place has moved on and gotten married while he was off training overseas. And his dog died too.

So it's about a professional athlete who's reached a low point in his life and presumably it'll move up from there.

I enjoyed that far far more than I was expecting to.

I have no idea how Victor can be so mean while being so cute. I half expected him to start calling "sssoooooEEEEE pig pig pig!"

He's mean but not cruel and his jabs are aimed to motivate rather than depress the Yuris.

Did the episode of this week go by a bit too fast for you guys? It seemed to hop all over the place compared to the first. Tis the curse of the setup episode, methinks, and it wasn't bad.

The gay subtext is in full swing here. Get hype for next week, when Yuri gives Victor all the Eros he's got.
