IGN can exclusively reveal Metal Gear Survive, a four-player stealth co-op game set within the Metal Gear universe, due for release on Xbox One, PS 4 and PC in 2017.

Set directly after the events of Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, Survive sees the members of Militaires Sans Frontières not killed in that game’s finale transported through wormholes into an alternate universe, where they’re forced to battle a force of crystalline zombies and, it seems, at least one Metal Gear itself.

Watch the trailer now:

“Metal Gear Survive will offer a fresh take on the series’ famed stealth elements,” said Konami European president, Tomotada Tashiro in a press release, “but within a unique co-op setting that is designed for a truly engrossing multiplayer experience.”

Survive will be the first full Metal Gear game made after the departure of series creator Hideo Kojima, and Konami has been unclear as to how much, if any, of the original Kojima Productions team will be working on the game.

While Big Boss appears at the beginning of the game’s trailer, it remains unclear whether he, the Snake clones, or any recognisable characters from Kojima’s games will appear in the core game. However, Konami does make clear that this is “a new addition to the Metal Gear Solid V experience”.

Konami has revealed few concrete details about the game at this point, barring a teaser trailer (above), but it will be built for four-player co-op play, and will have players using brand new weaponry to fight off enemies. A Konami fact sheet refers to the game as “survival done the Metal Gear way”.

The zombie-like enemies shown are referred to by Konami as “biological threats”, and mention is also made of teaming up to take down “massive threats”, which could potentially be the Metal Gear heard at the end of the trailer.

Going by the trailer itself, the game appears to involve scavenging for resources from the destroyed Mother Base, parts of which have been sucked through and scattered out of the wormholes that transported the game’s central MSF characters.

Survive will use the same FOX Engine that powered both instalments of Metal Gear Solid V. Konami will release more information following Gamescom, and we’ll update you as soon as we find out more.

so this is getting a like/dislike ratio on par with Infinite Warfare... great sign!

i'll probably be hung and dried for saying this, but i'll be willing to give it a shot once this hits the bargain bin, like every other game i'm not 100% clamoring for. people were wary of Metal Gear Acid when that was new because it was a card game.

Press at the event are saying it's a $30 game so yep, expect a loot crate system and micro transactions.

On a scale of 1 to You Feel It, Too, Don't You

How this isn't right and Konami should give it back do you feel right now.

I always felt the problem with Metal Gear was that it wasn't a completely different game and genre.

Fuck Konami.

Welp, everyone's greatest fears are being realized. Konami just took Metal Gear and lazily slapped Call of Duty Zombies onto it!

Fan-fucking-tabulous.

I think the first most-Kojima Metal Gear game being a zombie game is a perfect statement on the state of the franchise.

Called that this would happen by the way. Not this specific game, but a cynical console Metal Gear game was obviously going to happen. And I think this fits Konami very well. Easy to make, simple to market, and ripe with opportunities to stuff with microtransactions. The real question is if they'll actually bother to have actual stealth gameplay.

I accidentally posted this on the Phantom Pain thread... oh well, no harm posting my thoughts again.

I'm reminded of the Clickers from The Last of Us. Notice how they're lacking the upper cranium and eyes, and instead have only that odd red crystal formation sticking out? I'm betting these guys are either near or totally blind, but in return have great hearing, smell and can feel vibrations. Thus, the stealth part would have the player trying to move around as quietly as possible to avoid aggro-ing the zombie hordes, ammo being limited due to the lack of modern factories or supply lines, and the melee weapons coming into the forefront since they are easier to forge and don't waste precious ammo.

Federation Force was a well-intended spin-off that came off at a really bad time, seeing the drought of games the Metroid franchise has seen these last years.

This is just straight up a cynical cash-in of a beloved franchise announced just a year after a massive clusterfuck involving its creator and the company behind it.

Co-op zombie shooter Metal Gear made after its passionate creator left the company is the kind of thing I'd expect to read on The Onion. Poe's Law at its finest.

I don't know if this is amazing or horrible.

Like, I could imagine Brojima actually making this, maybe as a Phantom Pain minigame. And it wouldn't surprise me if it originally was and Conami just cut it out to sell separately, but that's conjecture.

It's giving me some Operation Raccoon City and Umbrella Corps vibes, tho. And I don't know if I can get behind a non Kojima produced MG title. It just... It feels like I'd be betraying him? It's stupid I know.

This is going one of two ways.

One: This will be the end all be all game to reboot and refresh the Metal Gear Franchise in the wake of Kojima's departure/Firing/Ascendance to Godhood/Whatever the rumor is at the hour. This game could take the Metal Gear Franchise in wild and exciting directions that don't involve pachinko.

Two: It's Resident Evil Umbrella Corps.

I'm hoping for number 1. I love the franchise more than I loved Kojima.

Yeah I can't really get worked up about this. For me, Phantom Pain was already an unnecessary cash-in so this is just adding to the pile.

This song needs more love.

Yeah, from many way Konami can milk this franchise, they have to add zombies.

A tactical stealth Co-Op focused on MSF survivors actually sounds neat, but wormholes and zombies...

A stealth zombie game with wormholes and zombies...wait? I covered zombies.

Point I was trying to make is that this isn't the stupidest thing I've seen from Konami. I'm not trying to issue a challenge, but I had expected something much, much worse.

I won't be able to make real decisions until after we see a little more.

Like I said: It could be Resident Evil Umbrella Corps.

I feel this game's plot would've worked without wormholes and alternate universes.

And does it have to involve Ground Zeroes and MSF survivors? It seems better for me to set it sometime, say, after Revengeance, and since cyborgs and nanomachines (son) are the in thing, some organizations are looking for the next best thing in warfare and so we have crystalline bio-organic weapons...

Does anyone remember that Metal Gear Solid V: Phantom Pain cost around 80 Million dollars to make?

To compare, GTAV took 40 Million to make.

I'm sure Konami wants to get the most out of that money, and with the quick turnaround (not to mention trying to release it around the Metal Gear 30th Anniversary), they probably reused a lot of Phantom Pain and/or Ground Zeroes.

If that's true, and again I'm thinking about the crazy turnaround time on this, then it means that this game might very well be Metal Gear meets Dead Rising.

Then again, that seems a little too good to be true...I dunno. I've been following Metal Gear since '89. I'd really rather Phantom Pain not be the swan song every one says it is.
