As far as 'a realistic depiction of Pokemon' go, they're not bad. Hard to determine the actual quality of the CG from that.
More set photos:
Those people in blue tights are the Pokemon, obviously.

Visit my Tumblr! I may say things. The Bureau ProjectHuh, aren't motion capture suits usually green? Or is that for green room sets?
In any case, Bill Nighy and Chris Geere are joining the cast.
Anyone reckon we'll see a teaser trailer somewhere in the summer, like in San Diego Comic Con or something?
No one has brought up the fact that Tom Mc Carthy has done some polish with the script. Just something to reflect on. It's like they want to be super sure that the script for a talking Pikachu is perfect.

Had to Google who Tom McCarthy is. Apparently his references include co-writing Up with Bob Peterson and Pete Docter and directing and writing award-winning titles like Win Win and Spotlight.
Sure enough, this article not only confirms it, but it also mentions another polisher named Eric Pearson, who was a writer for the really-awesome Thor: Ragnarok.
I mean, can you blame them? This isn't just some run of the mill live-action video game movie we're dealing with here, this is a live-action video game movie based on a Nintendo game. The last live-action movie based on a Nintendo game was Super Mario Bros. And how did that work out for everyone involved? (Answer: It didn't.)
I wouldn't be surprised if, during the interviews and so on for Detective Pikachu, they say stuff like "we consider the Super Mario Bros. movie a great example of what NOT to do for a Nintendo movie."

But why pick Detective Pikachu of all things? There are other ideas that would probably lend themselves better to movies.
But not many others would allow them to have a majority-human cast and still have a big name actor voice Pikachu.
This song needs more love.Because the classic Pokémon tales usually involve Gym Battles, fighting Team Rocket, or meeting a Legendary Pokémon. And they're going to involve lots of battling. Great for animation, not so great to test out our first official live-action Pokémon.
That's what the anime did back in the old days. Before they mastered art of battling by Johto (and perfected in Pokémon XYZ, the anime would often go for the Slice of Life episodes where Pokémon do comedic things. And battles were fairly short. That is something that works well with Detective Pikachu.
With that said, I do want another adaptation of Pokémon I Choose You. That story is a classic; perhaps the best Pokémon story ever told.
Another update:
Suki Waterhouse is joining the cast of Detective Pikachu.
Her references include playing Cecily of York in the Starz series The White Princess. She also starred in Assassination Nation, a highly touted upcoming independent film.
Also the weird-as-shit The Bad Batch.
"All you Fascists bound to lose."They're pulling out the stops. It's an impressive cast.
Visit my Tumblr! I may say things. The Bureau Project@Karxrida I think my post on the first page of this thread would make it clear what I'm always referring to.

She's a British singer/actress whose references include herself from America's Next Top Model and...Mia Grey from Fifty Shades of Grey and its two sequels.

Bump.
Alleged photos from the movie's set are buzzing around.
The article says "purported", which means they might be somewhat phony?
Mexican actor, Omar Chaparro, joins the cast.
In an unexpected twist of events, there's evidence saying that Legendary's Detective Pikachu will NOT be distributed by Universal, but by Warner Bros.
The article says this course of action is coming from the underwhelming performance of Skyscraper.
Not sure if this is a particularly good thing or bad thing...
Universal is unlikely to renew their financing deal with Legendary when it expires this year because of all the bombs from them Universal put out and all the problems they've had with Legendary management over Jurassic World, so it's no surprise to me that Detective Pikachu is moving shop to Warner Bros. Bear in mind Kong: Skull Island suffered this same Channel Hop because Universal didn't want a King Kong/Godzilla crossover.
The irony of this is that Warner Bros. was a major player for the live-action Pokemon movie rights when they were put up sale a couple years ago because of their history with the franchise (they released the first three anime movies outside Japan and Kids' WB! was the main broadcaster for the anime until The WB closed in 2006). Now it seems they got what they wanted by pure luck.
"The devil's got all the good gear. What's God got? The Inspiral Carpets and nuns. Fuck that." - Liam GallagherI'm not sure if you meant the first or the second, but regardless, yikes! Didn't even know there was drama behind the scenes...
But yeah, I guess this could be a win for Legendary and WB. Not only is there precedent in WB distributing Pokémon movies (like you said, the first 3 movies were released by them), but it looked like Legendary and WB has the stronger relationship than Legendary and Universal did anyway, what with the Godzilla and Kong movies looking and sounding like all kinds of kickass. (Saw the first Godzilla, but not Kong: Skull Island.)
But yeah, between having to drop out of the Fox bid and the split between Legendary, things aren't looking Universal's way, are they? (Not complaining, btw.) I wonder if this bad luck will affect that Super Mario movie coming from Illumination Entertainment...(though I'm wondering if Illumination's even a good fit for Mario. Would kinda rather see a Mario movie from DreamWorks, but I guess that's beside the point.)

This article delves into detail of the issues between Universal and Legendary.

"The devil's got all the good gear. What's God got? The Inspiral Carpets and nuns. Fuck that." - Liam GallagherThis part of the article leaves me thinking it's now Harsher in Hindsight.
...And then it turned out Brett Ratner was one of those sexually harassing a-hole jerks. Whoops.
Semi-related update:
Legendary and Warner Bros. are nearing a new distribution deal.
The article mentions that the choice to move Detective Pikachu from Universal to WB might have been a clue that Legendary wanted to end their deal with Universal sooner than planned.
Hate to double-post but...
And we have an official (but not that surprising) title:
Pokémon: Detective Pikachu
Look nice.
Although I don't know about having the Pokemon logo on top. I mean I know Star Wars does that with their Anthology movies, but tell me another name that happens to be "Pikachu" that is not from the Pokemon series.
We've got set photos, people!
They're really small, but you can see Victini, Machoke, Graveler, and Pancham in these photos, thus giving us a clue (heh) about how the whole "CG Pokemon in a live-action world" thing is going to work out. (Although this article suggests that these might get touched up in post-production.)
So what's the verdict?
