The Guild of Friendship - Magical Girl RP Interest Check/Planning

I noticed there didn't happen to be any Magical Girl RPs running at the moment, so I figured I'd start one. The name is a working title; feel free to suggest better ones.

The basic premise: Anita Torre used to be a magical girl, but has since grown old and retired. All the same she still wishes to help out future generations of magical girls even if she's too old to go out adventuring herself. So she decided to start a guild of magical girls to help them practice their skills and deal with whatever crazy thing gets in their way.

This is an open-ended RP; that is, there isn't a unifying plot to follow (at least to start with). Instead, the participants can come up with their own subplots, or go along with somebody else's subplot.

The other important thing is that this is a pseudo-crossover. Basically, the participants are free to use whatever magical girl character they please. Want to use a character from an original story of yours? Go for it. Fanfiction characters? Sure, just be careful about Mary Sues. Canon characters? If you think you can write them well enough. And of course, creating a character specifically for the RP is fine and dandy.

The setting is basically Earth with a loose masquerade of assorted abnormalities (read: whatever the participants want to bring in for subplots). Some things are very good at keeping hidden, others just don't care to stay hidden, and the rest are somewhere in between. Magical girls fall into that latter category; Anita won't go out of her way to advertise her guild's true purpose, but she certainly won't complain if anyone figures it out on their own.

The starting area I currently have in mind is remniscient of midwestern America. It consists of the guild building itself (a sort of mix between a job office, a military barracks, a gym, and a fancy hotel), a major city and some of its suburbs, maybe some other locations of interest, and whatever locations the participants come up with for subplots.

Since this is a pseudo-crossover, magic is obviously going to vary from character to character. For now, the only defined rules are that it's there and can't be used for ass pulls.

I think that's all the important things; if there's anything you feel should be addressed then please bring it up. Who's up for this?

Interest!

Question can they get the powers in the game? also are groups are allowed? I know a certain group that can't use their powers with just one member.

How intricate can a subplot be, and would the players be writing the subplot characters or you? I'm doubting villainous Magical Girls are proper player material, yet I do have an idea for a fallen hero alternate of a Magical Girl that's just been itching at me to be written.

[up][up]For the first question: if you're using a character you created yourself, then said character can earn her powers in-thread. Characters you didn't create yourself do have to start with their powers, unless there wasn't an explanation provided in their original work.

For the second question: I was planning on making the character limit per participant be three to begin with, which should allow for a small group.

[up]The one rule for subplots is that participating in them should be entirely voluntary; that is, they shouldn't envelop the whole RP and force characters who would otherwise avoid them to participate. For example, having a group of girls go out to hunt for treasure is okay, while having ninjas attack the guild building isn't.

Other than that, they can be as crazy or as low key as you wish. There's also nothing stopping subplots from intersecting; one group in a subplot can meet another group in a different subplot and have a quick chat with them, or even work with them for a while before going their separate ways.

Characters in subplots would be controlled by the player who introduced said character. However, if you aren't the one running the subplot I would suggest consulting with the other players in the subplot before introducing characters willy-nilly.

All right, I think enough interest has been displayed that it's worth making a sign-up thread. I'll get to that tomorrow.

In the meantime, I'd appreciate suggestions for starting locations/other things that might be worth establishing at the start of the thread. Worldbuilding isn't one of my strong suits, unfortunately.

Then, for starters, how does one become a magical girl? Do they have some sort of magic amulet or were they visited by some wish-granting cat or is it something else?

Well, establishing the magical girl/witch relation would be handy for older Magical Girl lines. Basically, were witches Magical Girls, were Magical Girls mistaken for witches, and so on. Though if Puella Magi show up, renaming the Witches would be helpful for preventing confusion (more in-universe than out).

Though how would solo Magical Girls and Magical Girls from non-Magical Girl things fit in? Furthermore, even if Magical Girl shows aren't fictional, there could always be the chronicle/obviously-not-real story route. Really, a handy tool for a masquerade is tricking people into believing the fantastical is fake.

Back to Magical Girls proper, outside of the guild is there any common unifier they have? Or is every Magical Girl touting her own pantheon and cycle of fantastic? Furthermore, how are fallen Magical Girls handled? Oh, and what generic forces are there for any Magical Girl to fight?

Sign Ups are go. That took a while to write up.

I ultimately decided that most of the things about this setting could just be made up as we go along. To answer some of the questions I have immediate answers to:

To facilitate the crossover element, I decided that most magical girls aren't actually native to the world the RP takes place in. Instead, what usually happens is that they just tend to find themselves here one day, through whatever sort of strange happening. This tends to happen only to girls who have already gained their powers.

For the unlucky few who got there powerless, or for those native to the setting who didn't already have powers, they have a bunch of options considering everything else that might pop up in the setting. There's no one way to gain powers; it depends on what the girl in question is lucky (or unlucky) enough to find.

The girls who find themselves here usually do so by virtue of simply being a magical girl. Whether or not they were working on their own, or whether or not their home story was magical-girl focused or not, hopefully shouldn't be too much of a concern (unless I'm not understanding that question right).

There aren't any generic threats to face off against at the start; the point of the RP is that the participants come up with that sort of thing on their own. That being said, the plotline I intend on running would have the participating characters face off against a group of Mechon-esque robots known as the Bleaksteel, and this plotline would be available from the start.

As for everything else, I'm either not sure at the moment, it's something the signup thread (hopefully) answers, or it's something I feel is best left being made up as we go along.
