Because someone, somewhere wants to talk about Tony Hawk 5...which was released sometime last month—I'm not sure, but I don't feel like combing through the internet for that sort of info right now. But what does matter is this discussion about the series. So have fun, and whatnot.

I've blanked the two posts above. They weren't conductive to a good discussion. Let's start over, OK?

I'm not sure the thread title is conductive to a good discussion.

Does anyone really play the Tony Hawk games anymore?

Yeah the thread title is loaded but Tony Hawk 5 is pretty awful, let's be honest.

And it's a damn shame because Tony Hawk went from one of best games on PS 2 (seriously I adore THPS 1-3 and I could go on for days why they're such good designed games) to one of the worst on PS 4.

I once played N64 Disney Skate Adventure... which is a spinoff using the engine, right?

Tony Hawks Underground was pretty good. Tony hawk 4 was good.

Haven't played 5 yet. What's the issues? Another open world game filled with too many gaps?

The game is the new Sonic 06, its only entertainment value is to see what bugs you get as the game hilariously implodes on itself.

That's what happens when they shove a game out because the license is set to expire, not the first example of this though and not the last.

I haven't played a Tony Hawk game since the demo for Proving Ground.

I had THPS through Project 8 with the addition of Downhill Jam. I liked all of them but I didn't purchase Proving Ground after the demo because the demo was a glitchy mess.

I moved onto the Skate series after that. I was looking forward to THPS 5 but not really paying attention hopefully they get a better developer if they make another. Robomodo isn't that good.

I honestly had no idea this game even existed. Surprised they even went with it, considering skateboarding ain't exactly the phenomenon it used to be. Shame it seems to suck.

Is the soundtrack at least good? One of the things the Tony Hawk games were always consistently fantastic with was the soundtrack. They couldn't have screwed that up, right?

Licenses?

Did Tony Hawk die or something?

[up]No but I think if Activision didn't make a new title they would lose the trademark and Tony Hawk would've went somewhere else to make the new game.

Well you buy a license for a certain amount of time, if they want to go somewhere else or you don't want to actually pay for renewal then it expires.

Pushing out a game just before it expires means you can make money without paying much, it just happens to be a game so broken that its only Youtube poop and Steam Refund bait.

Activision's license with Tony Hawk expired this year, basically implying they probably pooped this out just to get some quick money before the series died.

Also Disney Skate Adventure was on N64!? I know the PS 2/Xbox/GC version was pretty much a reskinned THPS 4 (you had to go into the options to turn on the proper Tony Hawk controls tho) but I didn't think there was a last gen version. I wonder if it used the THPS 1 and 2 engine or something like that. The first two games and a noticeably different feel than the games after 3 so I wonder how their any different (the PS 1/N64/Saturn version of THPS 3 played fairly differently than the PS 2/Game Cube/PC version for this exact reason.)

[up][up][up][up]Yeah the soundtrack is pretty dope as usual. Hell, even the crappy skateboard controller ones had a pretty good soundtrack.

Jim Sterling called Tony Hawk 5 "Goat Simulator on a skateboard." Make of that what you will.

I'm pretty sure the video from polygon by griffin mcElroy pretty much sums up how hilariously bad this game is.

As does the Jim sterling video.

Oh man! I loved Tony Hawk when I was little! I had all the games on my PS 1. I might pick this up if they fix all the bugs.

You can't get it wrong if it's the truth!

[up]Don't bother dude. Even if they patched up every bug it'd still be below average at best.

THPS 3 is basically the best game in the series, THPS 4 and THUG 1 good too.

I cast the card of the necromaster (again) to ask...

Are you dissatisfied with your copy of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 5?

(That's what we've been talking about, genius.)

Do you feel you got far less bang for your buck than you would've liked?

(No, we feel like we got a lot for what we paid. OF COURSE WE FEEL THAT WE GOT LESS BANG FOR OUR BUCK, YOU IDIOT!!!!)

Are you praying to a higher being of your choice (Zeus, Buddha, God,    Satan   , etc.) and/or utilizing the law of attraction to make THPS 5, at the very least, less bad?

(I...wait, what?)

Well, good news are to be had! For those sneaky devils at Activision have succumbed to the prattling and the whining you've all been making to give you all...a brand-new, hopefully awesome, 7.8 GB Patch for the PS4 version of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 5!!!!

Featuring Tyler the Creator and America's favorite Heroes in a Half-Shell, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! grin

This is undoubtedly Activision's way of saying "Thank you all for proving to our jerkass, cocaine-snuffing boss that we shouldn't have half-assed this effort! Now please stop yelling at us as well as wishing the Pox on us!" grin

It's already been marked down to like $12 at Best Buy because nobody is buying it at all. THPS 5 is basically screwed at this point, so I just hope whenever the next attempt to regurgitate the IP comes around (and trust me there will be one) they don't fuck it up again........

As someone who used to generally mock people who earnestly said the phrase "ruined my childhood", I can't help but utter those same words about Tony Hawk 5. I mean, it's not just "good game series is now bad", it's "one of the best games of the PS 1/2 era is now worse than Sonic 06"

Edit: I'll admit the soundtrack is still pretty dang good though, so that's one good thing about it.

...oh.

Man, you try to raise some optimism around here and you get swatted like a bug. sad

Was my post a least a little funny if mind screwey towards the third question?

For what it's worth, I'd get this game if only for the Turtles.

Plus, someone posted this:

I've been playing for several hours. The ability to turn the slam feature off (it's now done by double tapping grind while in the air if you want) fixes a huge issue I had. I noticed the game loads much quicker between missions than it did before and the levels load in much quicker at the initial start than before, but for the larger last few stages it's still a bit of a wait. I did notice some of the texture improvements, but it's subtle. You can now regain the special meter in the same combo you used it in. I didn't experience any of the glitches I was accustom to after over an hour of gameplay. However, the game still feels like a budget title at best. The levels are still uninspired and those annoying repetitive missions are still there. The game feels better but it's still not great. If you are interested in the title then wait until a price drop to $20.

For what it's worth. tongue
