Nah, they were all saved and returned to the real world. Somehow.
RE: Cyborg 009 is Kamiyama's own take on God's War.
God's War is an unfinished arc that is about the Cyborgs fighting against God that was supposed to be the end of the series. Ishinomori attempted several endings, but fans either didn't like it or he jut ran out of ideas leaving many of the ending arcs he started unfinished.
Sometime in the late 90s, he made up his mind to try his last attempt at writing and finishing Cyborg 009, but he passed away after only writing some notes about it.
There is also God's War, the manga done by Ishinomori's son, Jo Onodera and Ishinomori's other assistants which is inspired by Ishinomori's notes. This was done only a few years ago, and it's considered to be the ending of Cyborg 009. However, not everyone was pleased with it.
Kamiyama's film is dense and tries to be philosophical, but what Ishinomori had in mind for God's War wasn't too different either.

So... a bunch of cyborg super-heroes are supposed to take on God- the Judeo-Christian one? Even if you are from a nation not very familiar with the religion (like Japan) it should be obvious that's ridiculous, after all God is supposed to be omnipotent.
Even worse: Is this movie trying to say that those religious fanatics who become human bombs and kill hundreds of innocent people in God's name are RIGHT? Because that is what the ending seemed to imply.
And the movie was so tonally wrong. What need does God have of terrorist attacks and frame-ups? If He wanted to end the World and start it again, He'd just do it.
Speaking of tonally wrong, using cyborg superheroes crated in the 60's for a (mostly) grim-and-gritty thriller felt wrong, too.
I wonder if 009 vs Devilman will be a sequel to this or just ignore it (probably the later.)
Unbuilt Trope exists for a reason. There were plenty of dark moments in early 60's manga like Cyborg009. hell, Skull Man was '90s Anti-Hero in the sixties, also created by Shotaro Ishinomori.

Watch Symphogear<nods>
When the first Hot-Blooded Idiot Hero fell into the cockpit of the first Super Robot, it went on a rampage that wrecked half the city before he managed to understand enough of the controls to make it stop.
Necroing the thread because, in a real surprise move. Netflix has the entire Cyborg 009 vs Devilman OVA (in the 3 part structure) up for streaming right now.
And there's an English dub with a whole new cast, well mostly. Still handful of actors from Re:Cyborg's dub in this but in completely different roles. But since this is a different continuity I don't really mind.
I'm on Youtube Reviewing Things Cause I can. This crossover wastes a number of opportunities by never having Devilman fight cyborgs besides the big bad and 009.
I still like it.
Having seen it I can't wait for the sequel shown in that Sequel Hook.
Every accusation by the GOP is ALWAYS a confession.Yeah, I came to ask, what was that sequel hook? Another old school anime? The tropes page wasn't any help.
My various fanfics.Psycho Jenny is Satans psychic minion.
Every accusation by the GOP is ALWAYS a confession. What about Skullomania there at the very end?
My various fanfics.Dunno
Every accusation by the GOP is ALWAYS a confession.Ahhh, yeah. Him.
My various fanfics.Of which the modern Skull Man anime made into Black Ghosts origin story.
Watch SymphogearThat wasn't a Sequel Hook. That was Foreshadowing for the final arcs of Cyborg 009 and Devilman. Though I guess since this came after both the mangas were finished, it's reverse-foreshadowing or something like that.
Just imagine something here.Oh yeah, that's right. The appearance of Black Ghost at the end seemed like it was the unveiling of the statue from the Underground Empire arc.
Still would be cool to see a Cyborg 009 vs Devilman 2. or perhaps other crossovers between the works of between Ishinomori's works and those of his former assistant.
Blog - TumblrHer name is psycho-Jenny? I always thought it was psycho-meanie or psycho genie lol.
(Spoilers): My first reaction to that was, "Seriously? They are going for the Angel Fossil thing from the Simpsons? SERIOUSLY??" but the movie is otherwise *entirely* straight. And what about all that zombie cyborgs thing, was it resolved? Who was incriminating the 00 cyborgs? Are the characters in the end dead and in Heaven, Ala Lost? Does this mean the Angel "won"? I think they were going for meaningful but ended up just being a mindfuck.
