It occurred to me when reading through tropes for certain videogame bugs, particularly Minus World and The Missingno, that your typical Holodeck Malfunction on Star Trek could create very similar, but much more advanced and interesting, versions of these tropes.

Both tropes seem to rely on the game programs misreading random data as level data, or character/object data, respectively, and in the case of Minus World happening because the environments are based on stock objects/parameters. Look at the way many holodeck "programs" seem to come about- all the user needs to do is tell the computer what he or she wants and the computer will auto-generate a program, based one presumes on a library of stock objects, environments, etc.

Now imagine Negative Space Wedgie of the week shows up and starts interfering with the way the holodeck operates. We already see from "A Fistful of Datas" how stuff from Data's brain somehow "leaks" into the Wild West holodeck program and gets confused with the character programming, when Data is plugged into the ship's computer. Now imagine the parameters of our program are broken by the malfunction and the computer starts randomly generating characters, environments and scenarios that are not part of the original programming, which may or may not be taken from other data in the ship's memory banks, throwing up unexpected challenges for whatever hapless crew member is stuck in there.

Anyone think this might make good Fanfic Fuel?

An additional thought- what happens if a real person in the holodeck oversteps the bounds of the program? Does the computer somehow have a way of compensating for the changes, and what might this produce?
