Not even that's necessary to get Yhorm's attention; just standing in front of him for a few seconds will cause him to prioritize you. Heck at several points I had to wait until Siegward blasted Yhorm with the Storm Ruler in order to shake him off. (I was trying to pelt him with Great Arrows and fireballs at the time)

whelp. having blitzed through most of dark souls 2 with my greatsword, i am back at the dlc.

and man

fuck shulva. fuck sinh.

elana's easy but sinh is, like all dragon boss fights, total trash sad

just reminds me how with midir, they literally learned nothing from every failure prior :/

I tend to not like the dragon bosses either, not because I find them particulary hard, but because I just don't find them fun or interesting to fight. Dark Souls 2 tends to get criticized for having too many guys in armor bosses, which I agree with, but I have fun fighting most of them.

Nameless King will forever get my hatred because you have to fight his pet dragon every single time you die and start over again. He's ridiculously easy, boring to fight, and just wastes time before the real fight starts. Once that's over with the boss fight is great.

The biggest waste of time boss in the entire Ringed City DLC is the Demon Prince, honestly. If the two halves have different attacks I didn't notice them, and overall it felt like they just really wanted an excuse to do another three-health-bar boss like Friede.

It's been fun.

I liked Sinh, to be honest, but I fought him using a greatbow so it felt pretty satisfying.

Just beat this game last night. Finally, I have beaten a Dark Souls game, whoo!

Also beat the final boss while drunk as hell too. I feel like that's an accomplishment in itself.

Nicely done! Was it your first Souls game?

Also, stunningly appropriate avatar.

It's been fun.

finally back at fume knight. trying to solo him this time, which at first seemed easy...

but after dying a dozen times in the 2nd phase i guess not.

oh well. im getting closer.

i ended up upgrading my shield for the first time in any of these games just to get a little bit more leeway in blocking his stuff

RedSavant Since: Jan, 2001
#4009: Jun 16th 2017 at 6:26:46 AM

What's your Int at? if you want to have more breathing room with blocking you could try picking up Magic Shield or Great Magic Shield, both of which will make blocking (if the block itself is successful) trivially easy.

When I did that fight, though, I eventually lost my shield and just went for pure reflex dodging.

It's been fun.

my int and faith are at 20 after i respecced in order to get some shit from certain npcs

the shield im using is a great dragonshield or something. 38 or 39 strength required, now fully upgraded. running it with the pursuers ultra greatsword

my last run i was using two swords so i didnt have any choice but to dodge, and while i didnt solo it, i gotta admit this time around, his attacks are so easy to pin down the timing i think i could do it without a shield. i just dont want to. solo's enough of a challenge for now.

Aside from hitting like a fucktruck, he's actually pretty easy.

his 2nd phase is a little trickier because he changes the timing for a certain attack in the middle of a combo and gives you less time to heal, and attacks are more punishing, but overall, he's pretty easy to pin down the timing to dodge for.

problem is, he can very easily push you into having no stamina to dodge with, which is usually when you get hit, which is usually when you start trying to estus, which is when you usually mis-time it so badly you die. ive found that estus-ing right up in his face is more effective than being any distance away from him.

Red Savant: My first Souls game beaten. I have 1 and 2 on the 360, but never got too far in 2 and in 3 I'm right at the Ornstein and Smough battle.

I was listening to my mp3 player as I fought the boss, and the most oddly appropriate song came during the fight - Blue Oyster Cult's "Don't Fear the Reaper".

okay so strong magic shield can let me tank even 2nd phase hits with no damage

but uh

it doesnt last long, and theres only a very very specific window of time to recast it, which is usually spent healing instead.

oh well.

whew!

finally killed him solo. in the end i didnt use strong magic shield in the 2nd phase of the fight. as it turned out most of his attacks can be tanked with only minor damage if you just strafe to the left.

the alonne fight is great, i just wish i didnt have to go through the entire legion of alonne knights every time i die.

it gets tedious.

im not even kidding, the 5minute run to gwynn is precisely why i hated that motherfucker. alonne is not inclining me to solo him.

Let me get this straight:

  • In Demons Souls you're some traveling adventurer who DUN GOOFED and ended up trapped inside of an interdimensional turnstile called the Nexus. Okay, okay, so you're capable of great things even though you could be from Fuckknowswhereville. Being undead in Boletaria pretty much means that you suck.
  • In Dark Souls, you're an undead stuck in a prison. Whoever you were before, you died and got thrown into prison by destiny or whatever. Okay, so you lucked out that Oscar of Astora was around, and yeah, maybe you were a powerful fighter who just so happened to be in prison - and accomplished great things in spite of being most likely emaciated.
  • In Dark Souls II you are again some traveling fop who got his and or her ass CURSED and stumbles into some ancient kingdom looking for a cure. You kill just about goddamned everything in that kingdom, you re-kill everything that was already dead just to make sure, and then you kill the person in charge - and you still don't cure yourself. But, whatever, you're King/Queen.
  • And then in Dark Souls III, you're not even a destined Undead, or a cursed warrior, or some powerful rogue adventurer. You, oh ho ho, no, your ass is UNKINDLED. Being undead already sucks, but you're a failure even amongst the ranks of the Hollowed. And you still go off and kill the ever-living sh't out of a nightmarish ancient kingdom from it's mythical beasts to its gods?
  • In Blood Borne you're not even real; you're a mental projection that old, dying man injected into some kind of shared Lotus-Eater Machine. You are literally a thought lodged in some kind of nightmarish hell conjured up in the minds of countless others and you proceed to murder the other dreamers, finally culminating in you either becoming in control of the simulation, or killing the guy in charge.

Will Dark Souls VI's player character be a speck of bacteria that eventually evolves into a proper eucaryote and somehow conquers the plant and animal kingdoms? Will there be some lengthy, Spore-like sequence where you're fighting demonic white blood cells for control of some ancient corrupted deity's body?

[up] Oh no, in Bloodborne you are just some unlucky bastard who is terminally ill. The entire reason you go to Yharnam is to get your ass cured. Then you get an inoculation of alien god-blood that traps you in their nightmare realm. And then you kick all of their asses.

The general idea is that, yes, you suck. You suck ass. But because you can't stay dead, you persevere anyway because you are too damn stupid and crazy to give up.

Not that it really matters. Pretty much all of the games have you perpetuating an ancient Vicious Cycle at best.

Basically, you're Caleb from Blood, only less of a sociopath. In the words of the blurb: "Too stubborn to quit, too stupid to die".

[up] Whether or not you're less of a sociopath depends entirely on you, since the player character is a Heroic Mime. There's nothing stopping you from just slaughtering everyone in these games.

You are basically Subaru from Re Zero or Keiji from All You Need Is Kill.

[up][up][up][up] A correction for DS2: You do cure yourself if you complete everything and get Vendrick's true crown. While wearing it you never go Hollow, but still come back to life. The Dark Souls 2 protagonist is pretty much the only character who honestly can achieve their goals in the confines of the game's story, although it's not clear the sort of consequences that this 'success' might have. You also can only protect yourself, so all the NPCs you meet are doomed eventually - though given that Dark Souls 2 posits that Undead only hollow as they lose sight of their goals and memories, Majula might keep them alive for some time. You even make the Crestfallen Warrior hopeful again. Though... Given Aldia's twisted, merged-with-the-archtrees shape, you might find that curing the Curse for yourself only makes things worse in the long run.
