New Design and Code Update - January 8, 2015

Go To

Tropers - The first of many exciting updates to TV Tropes is upon us! In this update, we focused primarily on making the header and side navigation bars consistent throughout the site. We also reworked a ton of the backend code to allow for easier and more rapid development as we move forward.

Some of you may love the new design, others may hate it. Either way, we would love to hear from you below. We are listening, I promise.

If you have a bug to report, please use the designated thread on the Tech Wishlist and Bug Report to let us know about it.

Now get back to Troping!

I don't appear to have mine yet. I don't have much experience with the badge shops, though.

Suggested new feature:

I've always wanted to be able to add a trope example to a work page and be able to indicate that the trope is being used in-universe. What I mean by that is, supposing I want to add the trope "Fridge Brilliance" to a work's work page, but it's not an example of Fridge Brilliance I've had about the show, but rather an example of a character in-universe experiencing Fridge Brilliance. Would this be possible?

We already have such a mechanism; just write In-Universe in the example text.

Or put the [[invoked]] tag somewhere in the example (it stays hidden, so it doesn't matter where). waii

Where is everyone getting these Kickstarter badges from? I got the confirmation email and the follow-up email and I've checked my badge collection, and nothing has showed up. Are badges just broken for me or something? I know the one I'm wearing hasn't worked for two years but I didn't think that would affect the others.

And now the resources have flipped to the other side. Interesting.

Will take some getting used to, though.

I was about to post in the bug report asking if this was a bug. So it IS intentional. I'm rather 'meh' on it myself

Is there any reason why they need to be on the right? It greatly disturbs me. sad

Edit: Night Vision on the other hand, is great. I don't know how I lived without it. grin

I have a wide monitor; any chance that the massive blue bars on each side could be rescaled or something?

I came here to ask the same question. Not that it's bad, but right now the actual page is... I dunno, I wouldn't say deformed, but maybe out of scale? Maybe it's just because I'm used to the old layout, but I'm pretty sure the text is slightly smaller than before.

I also do not like the latest look at all. Everything looks squashed.

Yeah, not a fan of this new layout. I didn't necessarily care for the last one either, but this one is even worse in my opinion.

This recent change reminds me of Reddit a bit (namely, the right side part with the list of resources and stuff).

Woah. We just got a new sidebar.

I like the new design for the website, but...

I don't like this latest update. It takes up 1/3rd of my screen. I don't know how it scales but on this 1024 by 768 screen it's really big. Not to mention uncomfortable as well, because it squishes the remaining 2/3rds of the screen without adding too much in the way of content. Not to mention it's on the right side of the page (ehgads).

Can we revert to the older style? I liked it much more.

All I know is the usable real estate just shrunk and these blue bars don't actually match anything else on the page.

The fuck just happened? Everything's so small now. This is horrid! About half of me screen is covered by huge blue bars!

Either I'm just dumb or there's a new night vision thing. I like it.

Though I'm not fond of the squishing the new boxes make.

Shlugo_the_great Since: Sep, 2009
#1348: Apr 2nd 2015 at 4:50:46 PM

Yeah, it's a small box on the top of the page, and then rest of the page it's empty space that forces the actually useful and interesting part of the site to be squished.

What's with this format change? Who thought this was a good idea? The forum page is being squished smaller than it was before, and the threads in the thread lists are being spread out vertically (requiring extra scrolling). Plus, wasted blue space at the sides of the page.

The night vision is cool, I suppose. I'll be able to actually comment on it once those hideous blue bars are gone.
