I already did that during my one and only run through of the show. lol I was told it was all downhill after Dark Signers and that was easy enough to believe because DS was mindblowingly good.

Also from what I read, 4Kids really out did themselves with mangling the series after Dark Signers. I can't recall exactly all the details but I heard it wasn't as simple as stopping before the last season a la GX. After Dark Signers they skipped around a lot and made a huge mess of things.

The second half of 5D's had, through no fault of its own, an extremely Troubled Production resulting from a perfect storm of real-world crap converging on the series all at once by some unholy miracle. Real-world scandals, actors being occupied with other things, The Movie siphoning off the most talented crew members for a while, Executive Meddling from the card manufacturers, and more.

Even people who don't like it say they respect the fact that it managed to get any resolution at all after all this.

TL;DR Carly's Japanese voice actress was part of the same kind of cult Carly the character was in, leading to marginalization of the character and the supernatural/cult stuff as a whole and a shift to sci-fi. That's why Devack was never given much characterization, among other things.

[up] That's not 100% known for sure, but it's what a lot of people have been speculating.

Aki's VA also took significant time off to prepare for her wedding, leading to her character being marginalized too.

And of course, we can't forget how they wanted us to BUY MORE BLACKINGS!!!

Along with Leo (can't remember his Japanese name, since I get it confused with what his sister is named) suddenly being the Sixth Signer out of nowhere.

Edit: That being said, before you completely write the latter half of 5D's off, I have two arguments against it's poor quality:

Exhibit one:

And Exhibit two:

Also, that final duel, especially Yusei's last move. T'was magic.

Edit 2: [down]

Really? Well, colour me surprised.

I like post-signer 5D's cause it has all my favourite characters (Bruno, Sherry, Team Taiyou) and my favourite duel (Team Taiyou) but the way that Aki and Carly get squandered is a big let down.

Also Duel Skateboards only happen once and that's a tragedy.

Looking over older posts in here, I forgot when Legacy of the Duelist was brought up. I was kind of excited for it. That was over a year ago now.

How was the game? I was interested in the Story Campaign and the scenario where you take on the villain's role and have them win.

This might sound weird but in spite of being a fan of this series fo rwell over ten years, I've literally never played a game of Yugioh, be it IRL or in a video game. I have no idea how well I'd even do in this video game. If all the raging I see on forums is any indication, the show isn't even a good representation of how duels are.... Jaden and his Elemental Heroes/Neo-Spacians makes no sense, apparently and that's just the tip of the iceberg.

The problem with the Neos cards was that they were created with dramatic convenience in the anime in mind, then brought into real life exactly as they were in the show. To say the least, few real Duelists are as lucky as Jaden.

Konami has mostly learned its lesson though.

Yeah, the whole idea behind Contact Fusion was handled poorly when it came to the real game.

I'm sorry, but by dissing Contact Fusion you're insulting my beloved Gladiator Beasts, who are fucking awesome, thank you very much. tongue

Seriously though, I'm surprised nobody in GX used them. They've got a lot of solid parallels to the Heroes.

Well there is that Mini-Boss of the Week guy in ARC-V currently who's using them.

When I was assessing the different characters elsewhere, I said Kaiba was Chaotic Neutral because he's completely selfish, if not outright malicious.

As pointed out to me though, and as I am seeing in "One for the Road" he's not all bad. He went through with his plan to build amusement parks for all the children of the world, after all. I guess it's just that, since we mainly see him interact with our heroes, especially Joey, it does come off like he hates pretty much everyone and only cares about himself and Mokuba. He has his Pet the Dog moments in addition to Kick the Dog.

So was Battle City the final time we saw Mai in the manga?

I think maybe I should watch the Dartz stuff. I totally skipped it during my one and only run through of DM. It seems to be a huge YMMV thing. Some people regard it as one of teh best arcs of the series, others seem to think it's total bullshit.

Battle City was the last time we saw Mai in the manga. Her Penalty Game was different than in the anime (in the manga she was being devoured by flesh-eating bugs ans scorpions and would have died if not rescued within a day), but she took it pretty well and left happy.

Ya know, how the insanity of GX came to be make a lot more sense after re-watching DM. Sure, the kid who goes off into the woods for a year to learn how to draw better and the guy who fucking SELLS HIS SOUL to become better at drawing sound crazy but look at Battle City in DM.

Joey is at death's door and what do they do? "Make sure he's holding his Duel Disk, he'd want it close by." Because if there's anything Joey Wheeler wants in a tough spot, it's a symbol of Seto Kaiba's power and wealth. And then later on, what do they do? TAKE HIM OFF LIFE SUPPORT SO HE CAN WATCH YUGI'S DUEL. I mean, perfectly sensible.

I still take issue with 5D's, though. With DM and GX, this madness was at least isolated. In 5D's, it's institutionalized. The inmates are now running the asylum and all of society is determined by card games, be it judging your social/economic class or determining your guilt in crimes.

It says under Chazz's character sheet he's an Expy of both Kaiba and Joey.

Where does the Joey part come in?

That's a very good question.

He doesn't really have anything in common with Joey since Silas is Jaden's best friend.

Hell, Jaden has more in common with Joey.

So that whole Reincarnation stuff with Jaden is something I'd sooner forget because it's pointless and unnecessary ripping off Yugi but I am curious about something. Does Season 4 actually explain what Jaden's power is? His Character Sheet says he wields the Darkness of Justice.

How is that different from Nightshroud? And what's the damned point?

And why was Nightshroud/Darkness, which is apparently a cosmic entity on par with the Light of Destruction, serving the Season 1 Big Bad?

Good news, the English version of DSOD isn’t getting any scenes cut. You can get away with more in movies than on TV! (That’s also why Duel Monsters cards look different on TV over here, as there are laws against showing feature length commercials so they have to change how they look.)

@Nikkolas: Arc-V is actually the answer to your complaint about card games being such serious via action duels, which is essentialy a shadow game that anyone can play. Certain people then take it to its logical conclusion that it can be used for warfare. thus, the interdimensional war begins, and it actually explores the ethics of using child soldiers out on the battlefield.

[up] Yami Yugi and Seto Kaiba would be horrified at Arc-V, Yami because he fought so hard to prevent the return of Shadow Games, and Kaiba because he turned Kaiba Corp away from war to make Solid Vision and that's exactly what it's being used for.
