The Mona Lisa is used to illustrate three tropes: Magnum Opus, Mona Lisa Smile and Creepy Changing Painting.

The one on Creepy Changing Painting is apparently not just a picture, but encoded to be subtly moving, so I guess it's untouchable.

I wouldn't mind Mona Lisa Smile to still use the painting but with a close-up on said smile.

Magnum Opus is much more open.

Opened. I am dubious on leaving the painting on Mona Lisa Smile because that trope does specify "Homages, Shout Outs, and outright parodies" but I am not certain whether that excludes the actual Mona Lisa.

Yeah, it doesn't illustrate Creepy Changing Painting at all.

I'm leaning towards it being on Magnum Opus; it would be easier to get an example for Mona Lisa Smile.

[down] Uh, I didn't notice it did that. Can someone tell me how that even works?

The Daria pic that's used as the Mona Lisa Smile pic on Stock Poses would work just fine, methinks.

[up]I approve, that would be good start.

Yep, that one works on Mona Lisa Smile.

It's already on Stock Poses, so it makes sense.

The image being used on Stock Poses doesn't make it another duplicate right? If not, then it has my support.

I'm good with changing the Mona Lisa Smile to the suggestion.

Now, shall we consider the picture on Magnum Opus, and the variable one on Creepy Changing Painting different enough to not be considered duplicate? Magnum Opus is bigger and of a different coloration. Also, is it the best illustration for this trope?

I'd be fine with coming up with a different one for Magnum Opus...even a collage of different media would be good if we can come up with one.

The Daria pic is good for Mona Lisa Smile. I could go either way on Magnum Opus. The Mona Lisa is arguably one of the most well-known paintings of all time, so I think it works pretty well.

That's enough consensus for the Daria pic to go on Mona Lisa Smile; can someone please upload it and swap it in? Thanks in advance.

If Magnum Opus needs another image I would replace it by some iconic art image that is well renowned for being a masterpiece. Like the Venus of Milo, perhaps?

I also agree that the large picture of the Mona Lisa on Magnum Opus would fit better on Creepy Changing Painting than the smaller image that is now there. It's indeed a lot creepier at a bigger size.

Creepy Changing Painting is not an image proper, but a piece of HTML. It needs backend work to change.

[up][up]I don't think that particular work is a good example. I don't even know who carved that, let along what other works they've done.

Something like Michelangelo's Statue of David would be a better example.

Another suggestion: how about Rembrandt van Rijn's Nightwatch? It's definitely his masterpiece and widely considered one of the highlights in art. It's both grand in scale and exquisite in portrayal and we don't have any other tropes attached to it (unlike Sistine Steal, for instance.)

Is there a way to show that the work is a magnum opus without knowledge of the work? There was a Jesus picture that got contested for being JAFAAC in another thread so I don't think assuming that the viewer is familiar with the western history of art will work.

A Magnum Opus implies that you know something about the subject. Otherwise you wouldn't be able to tell a masterpiece from junk.

Also, the Mona Lisa, Venus of Milo and the Nightwatch are art works everybody on Earth can recognize and easily identify as a masterpiece. We're not talking about obscure stuff here. Perhaps if you're five years old or live in North Korea, but really... you don't always have to dumb stuff down to the lowest common denominator. If people haven't heard of half of the things on this page it should encourage them to find out more about it. There's more in the world than easily accessible popcorn entertainment and widening your cultural horizons should be everyone's goal in life. In fact, that's how the term magnum opus came into existence. To distinguish the good stuff from the forgettable garbage.

All the image needs to be is instantly recognizable as an idea of a Magnum Opus and encourage people to read the article. Therefore an iconic painting or a statue works better than any other, younger art form. Everybody understands why these things are exhibited in musea.
