I figured it was just the typical "no one has parents in anime".

It could be, but the fact that we have an explicitly dead parent at all is suspicious. I'd expect it to be connected to the events seven years ago, but it clearly affected more people than Nonoka's family. Expanding the idea suggests that there's a number of single parents now

I saw an interesting post on another forumnote  and I'm posting it here to see what you guys think.

Domvina said:

You and your friends make a wish as children. Something bad happens as a result of that wish. Right after one of your friends suddenly leaves without saying word.

The vast majority of people would put the bulk of the blame (if not all the blame) for the bad result on the friend that was no longer there. People are notorious for not taking responsibility for their actions. Give them a ready scapegoat, especially an absent one that can't defend itself, and they'll be all over it. Not just children or teenagers but adults and older adults who should know better.

It's human nature. We don't want to believe we're capable of doing bad things.

The sort of reasoning these characters show is the same sort of reasoning used now by people across the globe. It's a reminder to the viewer to stop and think more carefully about a situation rather than looking to avoid responsibility for your part in it.

[up] Yeah, it was pretty obvious that was headphones reason. Yuzuki seemed to be something different.

Who's the explicitly dead parent? I don't remember that. I probably just forgot since this is kinda slow paced.

Didn't we see store-girls parents in the first episode in the store?

[up] Nonoka's mom

Yuzuki seems to blame everyone but I think it's also because she can't accept responsibility for her participation in calling the saucer

I think what's going on with Shione is a more complicated and personal than just blaming the person that's not around to defend herself. She seems to be more angry about Nonoka leaving than anything else, for one

[up] Shione seemed to consider "Nonoka leaving without saying goodbye " the bad thing that happened. At least that was the impression I got.

[up]If that's the bad thing that happened, then it just cemented Shione as an incredibly unlikeable character.

I mean, I went through the same situation she did. And when I met him again 6 (or 7?) years later, I didn't act like Judgemental Mc Imbetterthanyou. None of my friends who felt betrayed by his sudden leave acted like that, either. Because we had empathy and the tiniest shred of human decency. Something Yuzuki and Shione don't seem to have.

[up] I would agree with that from what we know so far. Yuzuki is at least entertainingly unlikeable. Shione is just kinda dull. Actually, they all kinda are. Yuzuki is the only one who really stands out.

Episode 4: Watching Yuzuki is an exercise in frustration. What an obnoxious brat. Wouldn't even listen to the people who're just trying to talk it out with her, and she has the gall to say she's alone? Well of course, you're pushing the others away!

Even more glaring is that nobody else is telling Nonoka anything. A bit of information would help her build her case y'know?

At least Noel was there to be randomly cute.

I actually kinda like Shione. Doesn't mean I don't think she's a jerk, though.

Episode 5. In which they solve problems.

Sure, "dealing" with her problems. "Trying to work with people."

Excited for something she has no clue what it is. Too excited for her own health.

And honestly, the fireworks seem to be far lower than the saucer. Makes the ban seem kind of arbitrary. Well, I suppose it could potentially look hostile, but...

More importantly, what would the second plaster do?

Funny hearing her tell someone something can't be done.

Technically, it wouldn't be raining under the saucer. Well, not that it rains at the right date.

She's a sneaky little ninja. Someone's slowly warming up. Or letting go of her grumpiness, at least.

Does she blame the saucer for him getting hurt? That's it? I thought it was at least something serious. She can't be that petty. Can she?

When she said "one week", it didn't seem more than a random date. But...

And then she gets over her selfish arse.

Boom.

Good episode overall, but didn't do much to make me like Yuzuki. Can we focus on Shione now?

So.. that was it? That was the big problem with the saucer? Well that's just silly.

...I clearly expected too much of this show, like giving the characters motivations that make sense. This is clearly just a feel good dabble about friendship and stuff.

I will keep watching it because it's cute and stuff but I'm no longer expecting anything more from it.

So on to next week, let's see if Shione problem is as silly as this.

Didn't I drop this show last week? Why the hell did I even bother to actually watch it this week? Oh well.

So we learn why Yuzuki is such a douche canoe. Souta broke his leg... and it was her fault because she was doing something really stupid and he was looking for her in order to prevent her from doing said stupid thing... and she blamed the saucer (and by extension Nonoka). Oh well. So, what I think they tried to do is redeem Yuzuki by actually showing us her motivation. But said motivation is nonsensical, selfish and stupid, so I like her even less. Oy.

At least the saucer effects were kind of extremely pretty, so there's that.

Next episode, we'll probably learn more of Headphones Mc Twat, the character I cared so little about I still don't know her name. I can't wait for next week, where I'll definitely, completely 100% drop this like an ebola infested hot potato. I swear.

Well yeah that wasn't the problem I expected for a seven years grudge...Anyway that's finally over.

[up]Yeah, maybe this show would've benefited from a heavy dose of Backstory Horror. It would have given these characters much better motivations for a seven year grudge.

But I've never held a grudge in my life; not even against the guy who bullied me in middle school. Maybe I just don't understand grudge holders.

It doesn't fit the writer's MO though. Go back a page with what I wrote with Sola which had VAMPIRES in it, but it never amounted to much aside from character flavor and a source of mild angst.

Ouch, that was quite the crash, Souta.

Yuzuki's heart has been mended. After a long struggle to come to terms with the fact that she messed up, blaming everyone and everything within earshot.

Not even Shione can resist Noel's charm. Well, at least she's beginning to defrost.

Now, let's get to removing her negative code.

Episode 6. In which there's thawing in hot water.

She's way too practical for her own good. Then again, I'd probably pick the same.

Yeah, I could hear that question long before she asked it.

I wonder what the frequency of that golden ball appearing is in Hot Springs Episodes. Well, after the last episode, a Breather Episode seems like a good plan.

Too bad it's the red one that's the first prize here. Well, there's always another one who can pick it up instead.

They seems to be a lot closer than previously implied.

Good picture.

He totally doesn't want to get invited.

It's like mom's leaving the house for a day with her only son to take care of himself.

You Moment Killer, you, Koharu.

I think she unwittingly owned him.

And she wittingly owned her.

Those are some vintage games.

Totally not intimidated.

Okay, if that's what she was going to ask, I can certainly see a direct connection to her being intimidated by that. Unusually direct.

I think I'd have preferred the line, "That was as hard as I could hit you."

Can't resist the little blue ball of happiness. Even if she tries.

Overall, slow episode where not much of anything actually happened. But not bad.

Enjoyable breather episode

Is it just me, or has Yuzuki developed a crush on Nonoka?

This episode proves that this anime does better at lighthearted humor than at drama.

Yuzuki is back to being nice, fun character she is when she's not forced to play the antagonist. Much better if you ask me. I liked her interactions with Souta, they were pretty true to life.

Speaking of Souta, wow things didn't go good for him this time around.

Shione is starting to thaw out due to Noel influence. Little ball of sunshine, that one.

I wonder what's on Nonoka's mind.

Episode 6:

Time for some hot springs.

Enjoyed Yuzuki and Souta's much friendlier interactions.

Poor Souta. He's the go-to guy for keeping shop. And Koharu's so oblivious.[lol]

It's amazing Shione never bumped into Nonoka.

...Um...is curry soup even possible? Even if it is, he's a terrible cook!tongue

Yuzuki/Nonoka: Support level increased.

Noel's doing a great job in defrosting Shione. But since Nonoka isn't doing the thawing, she isn't gonna be jolly towards her yet...

Wonder what's on Nonoka's mind. Why is she mulling over gratitude?
