Sign Ups Can Be Considered Closed To Anyone Who Has Not Expressed Interest Already

The history of RP for the absolutely mind blowing and amazing Japanese animation series known as Neon Genesis Evangelion and the massive media juggernaut that has (perhaps ironically) sprung up around it is a less than storied one. They more or less all die to a man within a few pages without having achieved much. Whether ambitious or more relaxed and slice of lifey (heaven forbid), whether free form or built on a tabletop system like Adeptus Evangelion. They never last.

It's not something that's avoidable, to some extent. There's character chemistry and player chemistry that has to be considered, and if it doesn't hit off people just vanish and find better uses for their time. But to some extent a bit of pre-planning can help make it more likely that the players will enjoy playing together, that they will come into the RP with similar expectations and thus avoid power struggles or the like.

So... let's talk about what we'd want to see in an Eva RP. The one thing I will not budge on, as potential GM. The overall tone. It must remain Evangelion-esque. The world should still be Earth, it should still be under attack from supernaturally powerful beings defined by their violent search for the mother figure from which they sprang to return to. Psychology of the individual characters and philosophy of why they do what they do should be front and center. The giant robot fights have always been a means to an end, not the end in and of themselves, and I hope any prospective players share this sentiment with me. Characters made need to be well thought out, deep and rich with plenty of bits and pieces to weave into character arcs that will honestly be the centerpeice of the RP, not just a side note like most RP. There should be depressing content, brutality; just as much as there should be inane occurrences and even a fair bit of comedy. Life isn't static, after all. One must get hope in order to be plunged truly into despair.

But beyond this, the mythos we could build for this RP is definitely flexible and we should consider customizing it to fit our own purposes. Maybe a few more weird Judeo-Christian symbols incorporated into the conspiracy that surrounds Eva canonically? Maybe change up the conspiracy all-together, make a different reaching theme from the one SELEE provided Evangelion. Use the classic angels, the Rebuild angels, a bit of both, or a new progression customized just for us? As long as we do not make changes that stray from the core of Evangelion, I will allow a good host of potential changes to be debated on.

So yeah. If you're still with me after all of that, if you're rearing for a good, epic Eva RP that might actually mean something this time around, feel free to post! Ideas, suggestions, character sketches, or even just an affirmation of interest will all be welcome.

Alright, a tentative character sheet:

  • Name:
  • Age:
  • Gender:
  • Occupation: For the kids this would obviously be pilot unless you're gonna make them secret agents or something, ala Rebuild Mari.
  • Appearance: A picture works fine here but some words on stuff like relative height still help.
  • History:
  • Personality:
  • Skills: Probably more mundane than combat applicable for the kids, but you never know.

Our Cast So Far (Check against these while making your character):

Well, one thing about the tone, there should probably be room for some lighthearted slice of life stuff, especially near the beginning, provided it doesn't get too inane or forced. After all, that's prevalent in the series as a means to build the characters up before we bring them down as well (Both Of You, Dance Like You Want To Win anyone?).

Still, it might be good to go the condensed route in depicting events from the series, though maybe not quite so much as the Rebuild movies.

Oh, and I've already called a spot for an mission control character. I know people will probably want to be pilots, but it's fun to have the adult characters with their own little social group on the side.

I covered that in my long spiel already, slice of life is fine provided it's sensible content considering the characters involved. There is room for hilarity in Eva, at least until the part where shit goes down.

I'm thinking a few of the angels at least have to be eliminated (Ireul, anyone?), maybe a few condensed, and some of the Rebuild designs are too cool to pass up. It'll probably somewhere between classic and Rebuild in number and scaling intensity.

So that's three interested, with one specifically going for a Misato like character. One or two more Children would be cool, so I don't have to play any of them myself. You said you had a character sheet from an old Eva RP, Combat? So far nobody's made any major suggestions for change ups so it seems the one you used should be fine. In the mean time let's get character ideas out there, perhaps? So the others know what they've got to play off of.

Well, more like Hyuga. Aoba, and Ibuki working under the Misato-like character (with perhaps some more interaction with the kids than the lieutenants had in the series, because RP character development). Ireul would probably be his chance to shine...

So you're not going to be the tactical director? Huh, I was operating under the assumption that that was what you were doing...

Would you be playing the Gendo-like character or is a player allowed to do that instead?

I will allow it, but you're going to have to probably accept additional responsibilities with plot and pseudo GM stuff depending on the nature of the character you made.

Honestly, it would probably be easier to retool him into a Ritsuko-like character. I'll PM you the character sheet.

Alright, a character sheet has been posted to the OP. Do study others sheets as they're posted and think about making a fluid ensemble, certain personalities will provide more 'entertainment' in tandem than others.

As I P Med to you, here is my character sheet copied verbatim from the old R Ps.

Name: Gabriel Scott

Age: 24

Gender: Male

Occupation: Sync Ratio Specialist/NERV 2nd Lieutenant (Basically a Bridge Bunny, but he'd probably dislike the term if he was called that in-universe)

Appearance: Short blue hair (think stylized black, like Misato's, not vaguely inhuman albino like Rei's) and blue eyes. Distinctly Caucasian in appearance; people can tell he's not native Japanese by looking at him. About 6'4'' with a thin and gangly build (slightly above average height among his American peers, but sticks out even more in a Japanese crowd). Slight permastubble.

History: Gabe was born to scientist parents in a small New England coastal town, where he spent most of his early childhood, and is an only child. He had a mostly normal early life, but this all changed when his parents took a fateful research assignment in Antarctica at the dawn of the 21st century. The rising tides of the Second Impact left Gabe's hometown underwater and forced him to move further inland to live with his grandparents. In actuality, the move was arranged by Gehirn officials who secretly kept a close eye on him through his adolescent years, though Gabe himself is unaware of this. This trauma didn't affect Gabe's performance in his schoolwork but did turn him into a bit of a loner in his early adolescence, really only snapping out of it when a teacher suggested he try some sort of after school activity for his own good. Deciding to try out for baseball for the hell of it, Gabe discovered he had a decent enough arm to make the mediocre team as a relief pitcher, and the experience made him a few new friends. As he matured into young adulthood, Gabe decided to follow in his parents' footsteps and study Metabiology at MIT, eventually earning himself a postgraduate job at NERV's First Branch through his faculty connections. After a couple of years helping to oversee experimental A.I.s and contact and dummy system experiments with Eva 03 (and 04 at the Second Branch in Nevada on occasion), his superiors send him to Tokyo-3 for reasons as of yet unknown to him.

Personality: Gabe was old enough at the time to remember the loss of his parents and the horror of Second Impact. While he sees his job as necessary for the future of the human race, he has a guilt complex over the use of young parentless children to fulfill NERV's goals, identifying with them just a little (although he might have a little difficulty relating to them on a personal level, especially with the culture barrier). This is something that could send him spiraling into full on depression should he end up blaming himself for something particularly horrible happening to one of the pilots, but for the most part he likes to keep these particular worries hidden under a facade of professionalism and rationalism. This can cause him to come off as emotionless and impenetrable at times despite being known to make sarcastic quips on the job, but he will be more relaxed, casual, and even somewhat talkative off duty around people he trusts, which sometimes surprises people getting to know him. Coming from a scientific background, he isn't yet used to the more militaristic aspects of NERV culture (owning a sidearm, wearing a uniform instead of a lab coat, etc.) His hobbies and interests skew towards stereotypically geeky American stuff (comics, tabletop and video games, movies, maybe the odd anime that he's seen), but he does have an affinity for the game of baseball, and the Red Sox in particular, thanks in part to it being one of the few constants in his life that he feels ties him back to his parents when they were alive. He's also a bit of a Covert Pervert (with standards; he won't be ogling any 14 year old girls in plugsuits, but let's just say he appreciates that the female officer's uniform includes a miniskirt). Also hates being called by his full name, preferring Gabe to Gabriel.

Skills: Gabe is very scientifically-minded, tech savvy, and intelligent, although he isn't much for coming up with tactical ideas on his own, owing in part to his tendency to overanalyze options and not think well on the fly. He knows this is a weakness of his though and prefers to defer to the man or woman in charge during combat situations, helping iron out their existing plans. He is very good at appearing to remain cool in high pressure situations, rarely becoming externally flustered (although you can be sure something has just deeply affected him if he does show any outward signs of emotion in these situations). Also, given his awkward physical frame, he has a slightly inexplicable ability to throw palm-sized objects with decent speed and accuracy, however this really hasn't done him much good since his high school playing days.

Gabe is a native English speaker but also fluent in Japanese, a requirement for him to work at the main NERV base in Tokyo-3. Any words or lines he has in English will be differentiated with red text. He also has enough of a basic understanding of German to be able to hold somewhat broken conversations, but he's nowhere near as fluent in it as he is in English and Japanese.

Feel free to take your time guys, this is most likely gonna be a slow burner RP (quality of posts counts more than quantity!) and through PM I've learned that Combat might be changing his character anyways. Just post if you lose interest, please. So I know the prospects for this RP going into the future.

I should explain about my character. I would very much still like to use Gabe, but in the past I've found he works best when his immediate coworkers (the tactical officer, other lieutenants, and possibly head scientist) are a little eccentric and can bring him out of his shell. He's so much fun to play in lighthearted situations where he's out of his comfort zone. Otherwise, it would be in character for him to just put his head down and do his work in a role that honestly would be better suited for an anonymous NPC.

So if that helps anyone who was thinking about putting together a tactical officer or something like that, go ahead. I was just thinking that since this is probably going to be smaller scale in terms of the overall number of players, I might want to think about playing a character in a more important role, who I would want to build from scratch. I'll wait to see what kinds of characters other people come up with before I make my decision.

Ha ha ha ha ha!... Believe me, you're not.

The last time he tried that, the results were rather insufferable... We're talking about levels of Wangst that make Shinji at the End of Evangelion look like a super-cool-headed badass... Believe me, it's bad...

He would be better trying the character concept he used to replace that character... To me, it was far more interesting.
