I replaced this image unilaterally at first, and I apologize for that.

At any rate, I think this image is in need of a change, as its depicting solely Asian women comes dangerously close to conveying a race fetish-esque deal, and conveys also very negative stereotype. IE, there is no need to have solely Asian women in the photo. Too, the focus of the image isn't even remotely on the car, thus doesn't really convey the trope well.

I have found a prior photo that definitely fits the trope better, without conveying or being at risk of conveying racism or sex-race-based stereotypes.

I think it works well. That the focus is on them more than the car also sells what the trope is actually about.

Not sure what negative stereotype it's showing that isn't the trope itself. Considering the typical examples I've seen, they're not even relatively skimpily dressed.

I don't... huh? Your issue is that they're Asian... and that's it? The closest thing to an issue I have with them being Asian is it might be confused for the Japanese-exclusive Race Queens, which is apparently closer to Pit Girls. But even that's a stretch.

This seems like borderline Political Correctness Gone Mad...

EDIT: Okay, so here's the image you suggested:

My issue is that I can't even tell she's on a car. I get that is sort of the idea, but it's too zoomed in to even really make it out at first glance.

Can't tell what the suggestion is.

And I don't agree with the current being in any way race-fetishistic. If it were, one could argue that any fanservicey image of more than one person of a given ethnicity is race fetishistic, and that's fairly unreasonable.

[up] Hell, technically any image of just one person of any given ethnicity would be race-fetishistic, wouldn't it?

While I also don't see the race-fetishist angle of the current picture (I assumed it was form a car show in Tokyo, since bunny-girls aren't usually what American car companies use as a Booth Babe and Hood Ornament Hottie (far more likely that they'll be tall, blonde, leggy and in a bikini or slinky Little Black Dress); I also don't think the current is very good. They car is too completely hidden, and it looks more like a cast picture. The girls should be there to show off the car, not hide it.

On the other hand, I also don't think the OP's suggestion is very good. If I wasn't told she was sitting on a car, I wouldn't know. And, despite the name, the girls are rarely actually allowed to sit on the car. They may be leaning against it, or sitting in it. They very often aren't even touching it...

So, suggestions:

  1. Car show invite: Moved to post #14
  2. Red Abarth
  3. Angels, SEMA 2010
  4. 2011 Bangkok car show
  5. SEMA 2010, white bikini
  6. Silver car, black dress, Detroit
  7. Skoda, 2011 Geneva, white dress

7.1 gives me a redirect error. 7.2, 7.3 and 7.6 work. 7.4 is too small and I reflexively dislike showing so much skin as 7.5.

I don't either, but it wouldn't hurt to show the car better...

(and besides, even as a photograph, the reflective glare from behind the 4 girls' heads is painful to look at.)

I think the current works fine.

The thing is, Asian women are under heavy sexualization and race-fetishization in the media (and get stereotyped as such), and that is not what this trope's about. This image, being only Asian women, plus the car not shown in its entirety, gives off race-fetish vibes more than anything, and carries a negative stereotype with it completely unrelated to the trope.

Its not PC so much as "Hey, this is giving off heavy racist vibes" Had it been one women of such, or a group of multi-ethical or white (as white is the "standard"), the vibe wouldn't be so heavy.

However, with this picture, its not the case.

But in a more technical note, this image really does not even capture the trope. The car is hardly visible, and nothing is really known past the fact there are women there.

On another note, I should have said "Does Not Illustrate".

I think the current works fine, though of the suggestions, 7.2 is best, with 7.6 in second.

If you put a woman in that kind of outfit it doesn't matter what race they are. They're heavily sexualised anyway. And pulling any image that show that isn't the answer. I think it only looks race-fetishist if that's what you're expecting to find. My impression is that they're Japanese, so them being any other race in that context would be out of place.

You're missing the point entirely. Its one thing to have scantily dressed women, while sexualised in it self, but choosing a photo of a group of over sexualised women of one ethnicity, especially that of one that has been consistently sexually stereotyped throughout history and especially now, gives off heavy unfortunate implications, especially if the trope is not specific to it.

And on the technical note, again, the page image does nothing for the trope. The car is not really the subject at all, the photos focus is just the women. In other words, not at all what the trope implies. A large majority of the images suggested here show the trope far better than the original image, regardless.

On second note, you seem to be thinking that their being Asian is the reason why I'm saying its over sexualised, which is the reverse. The problem with the image is that its solely Asian women being depicted in this sexual manner, and nothing else (not even the car of which is supposed to be part of the trope), which portrays race-fetishy tendencies. As I said, had it been one girl, that vibe would be reduced somewhat, and had it been multiple ethnicities, the notion generally could not be made.

But the trope is about them, not the car.

The rest I'm just going to disagree with.

The purpose of this thread isn't to discuss your opinions of the moral and ethical shortcomings of the trope.

It's to find a pic to show it. That's all.

Now that I've had a chance to look at the current, my only real objection is how obscured the car is. I don't have an issue with the women in the pic; given the nature of this trope, the less risque the pic is the better, and while their outfits are revealing they're tame in comparison to how this usually presents itself. The debate about the stereotyping aspect of the pic is utterly irrelevant and needs to stop.

Overall, Keep Until Better Image Suggested.

Yeah, I think "racist" angle is just really reaching. For the suggestions, 7.5 is the only one I can see working, but the current isn't worse.

Keep Until Better Image Suggested. Wanting to change a pic solely because of the race of the person depicted strikes me as similar to wanting a change because a work is overrepresented; i.e. not a good reason.

Rhetorical, eh? ... Eight!
