Hmmmm...interesting idea. The only drawback I can see is how the first might look at wiki size.
The first, cropped and PNG'ed at wiki size:
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard Feynman
Surprised there isn't an image there. I love the cropped suggestion. It doesn't give focus to any particular series... though if I were to choose the most iconic series, I'd go with any screenshot from Street Fighter II.
It's amusing, but not particularly illustrative of it being a Video Game Genre. Well, it does show the basic idea. And the triangle on the left is bugging me.

Check out my fanfiction! If someone could photoshop in some medieval-looking life meters and names, and maybe an hourglass for the timer, that would be hilarious.
Methinks that the electric aspect isn't essential to this trope, so I wouldn'tdiscount the medieval pics.
More when I geg back from hiking.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanIt's definitely a VG trope, but there are exceptions like "Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots" and the robot-fighting in Real Steel.
Here's a plain version without the black triangle.◊
And here's a photoshopped joke version:
To tell whether a given example falls under Tropes Are Flexible or Square Peg Round Trope, one has to isolate the core components of a trope/genre and see if the example qualifies for them. If it does, it's the former, otherwise it's the latter.
In my mind, "game" and "controlled by player input" are core components of Fighting Game, but "video" and "electric" aren't since they just represent the way the player input is realized. So these images would still qualify for the trope/genre.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanThat's good. Could you possibly adjust the colors in the towers to show that one has taken damage?
Two alternate captions: "Who says they never had these games back in the day?"
Or simply: "Fight!"
Going medieval!
"Match one: SCUFFLE!" (Round one: FIGHT!)

I kind of like that but none of the words should be the same, and I dislike "scuffle" :)
Suggest:

Becky: Who are you? The Mysterious Stranger: An angel. Huck: What's your name? The Mysterious Stranger: Satan.Nice.
Is it possible to squeeze names over the towers? Maybe "Arthur" and "Mordred"?

I like the "some health missing" suggestion also :) Probably the one on the left, since the guy is looking at it.
Becky: Who are you? The Mysterious Stranger: An angel. Huck: What's your name? The Mysterious Stranger: Satan.Scuffle was the only synonym that I could think of that matches the medieval visuals. Not to thrilled with Engage... too... Star Trek-ie.
How about "Altercate", or "Confront", or "Contest", or "Joust"?
... or Foehtan, the Old English verb for Fight?
Also, instead of "Match the one", how about "First Match of Three"?
Quarrel.

- Different word for "FIGHT": Okay.
- I suggest "DO BATTLE".
- I don't like "QUARREL" because it implies an argument with words, not a fight with physical violence.
- Here are some other synonyms: [1]. I also like "ATTACK", "BRAWL", and "SKIRMISH".
- "First Match of Three": I vote no, based on several points.
- Unlike "Match the First", that phrase is not analogous to "Round One".
- "Best two out of three" games may only have two rounds (not three) if the same person wins the first two.
- I did not suggest "Match the One", which is not even fake antiquated phrasing, let alone genuine antiquated phrasing, which the suggestion is.
- I like "Match the First" way better.

Becky: Who are you? The Mysterious Stranger: An angel. Huck: What's your name? The Mysterious Stranger: Satan.I meant "Match the First" when I typed "Match the One". That was just an error.
And of course you would like it better. Just how I liked "Match One" better.
Anyway I don't care anymore. I'll let you sort this out.
Or for cheesy Ye Olde Butchered English: FIGHTETH!
Here's a version with missing Hit Panel & banner:
Nice! "Zounds! A doughty combo!"

Works well enough.
Check out my fanfiction! My only complaint is the white banner is too white...
Fighting◊ Games:◊ older than you'd think.
