Here's a problem for making the page: out of all the wicks Adept Rogue checked, it looks like 4 are of Septimus's type. That's less than 10% of the wicks becoming the definition of the page. At that point, isn't it better to scrap it and start a new page entirely? One that won't have the baggage of memes and ZCE?

You can't ignore the inbounds, There are 56 of them. They need to go somewhere.

If we have to do something, I'd say that.

Honestly, Jesus Saves is just not a good name. For anything. No matter what we do, if we pick out a perfect definition for it, as a name, Jesus Saves will just never be terribly clear. It's too ambiguous.

Divine Intervention is as I mentioned before a plot device, usually along the lines of a Deus ex Machina or Ass Pull, not usually with emphasis on religious aspects as this trope.

Is it possible for the mods to see who left the hostile descriptions?

[up]I don't really see it as hostile, just making obvious jokes because the name kinda invites them.

[up][up] Is it? The examples look pretty divine to me...

The inbounds are about the meme, not a trope.

How can you be certain of that?

[up] Not at all, but my gut feeling is that the majority are either about the meme or the belief.

So, it appears we shouldn't worry about the inbounds then? Is that what you're saying?

OP here. Glad to see people mostly agree with me.

The first part of the writeup is more about a stock phrase than a trope. Actually, about jokes about a stock phrase.

The next part is kind of about how the Christian theology of the forgiveness of sins is bad. Considering the purpose of this wiki is generally not even to judge whether *tropes* are good or bad, this seems to me to be getting well away from the mission statement.

Optional theology follows. None of which is necessary for discussing this "trope"'s lack of tropiness, so feel free to skip it if it may offend:

PS Some of the critique is based on a misunderstanding of most Christian sects' theology about redemption and the forgiveness of sins.

To be specific, deliberately sinning away while gloatingly planning to exploit a loophole by using a sudden not-very-sincere deathbed conversion to get into heaven...does that sound at all likely to work on an omniscient diety?

Repentence is often regarded by Christian sects as being as necessary as faith (or as the sign or result of true faith). Given that, yes, most Christian theology holds that any sin can be forgiven up to the point of death. Re: the Parable of the Prodigal Son.

yeah, I'd say we can just loose the inbounds, as this doesn't appear to be a trope in any way shape or form.

So if the inbounds is no longer a concern, do we have any reason to still keep this one around?

Catbert's right, scrap this one.

I guess I can rustle up a crowner for this, unless we have enough consensus already?

Crowner. We didn't start off with a clear unanimous vote, and the number of inboinds is significant. The only other option I can think of for saving the inbounds is a redirect to a "meme" page.

So, a single-prop on whether to cut it or a page action with cutting and redirecting somewhere as the options?

It's one of my favourite tropes out there. I don't get to use it very often, because writers of fiction seem to go out of their way to not be specifically and overtly Christian like that, but when it comes to Real Life news, it can be easy to find preachers that have this as the linchpin of their message. For instance, Francis telling the mafia to repent and entrust their souls to Jesus. The trope "Prepare to Die" is also fundamentally based on Jesus Saves: the enemy is given a moment to pray to Jesus and repent before being run through or Double Tapped, or what have you. A related trope that doesn't show up very often nowadays is the sacrament: you know, "I'm dying, call the priest!"

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.

Page action, I think. "Cut" isn't the only thing that's been suggested to solve it.

[up][up] Pray tell, what exactly is the trope at play here?

It's using religion as a messianic message. See also the definition I gave beforehand.

So what options do we have here? So far we have considered:

  1. Redefine & clean up
  2. Redirecting the trope
  3. Axing the trope completely

Crowner time?
