I own a Grimms compilation, an Andersen compilation, and a collection of various tales from China, so I think I count.

I also own both Hans Christian Andersen and Brothers Grimm collections, so I definitely enjoy reading fairy tales and folktales! I also love reading folktales from around the world including The Fool of the World and the Flying Ship from Russia and Lon Po Po from China.

My favorite versions of fairy tales are those by Jay Ward. Do I count?

[up] Don't forget "Riding Hoods Anonymous." That one always cracks me up, especially the part with the basket full of (BOOM!!!) ...goodies...

Jay Ward also did "Aesop and Son," which was Fractured Fairy Tales applied to the fables of Aesop. It wasn't as successful.

Woo! Hello, you guys!

I enjoy Hans Christian Andersen, Grimm's collection, and whatever else I can find regarding fairy tales. Then for folklore, I'm not quite as well-versed in that as mythology, but I think I have a fair grasp of it.

Mostly I use them for springboard/inspiration about my own writing. I don't really study them as a formal thing.

I love Italo Calvino's Italian folktales. I grew up with them.

East Of The Sun And West Of The Moon, The Firebird, and the story where a girl finds her cursed brothers and has to remain silent while she makes them shirts of nettle fabric to change them back. It's either the Seven Ravens or the Seven Swans.

[up][up] Well, I got the swan part right. grin

Is anyone else writing original/inspired-by/adaptation works? I'm technically writing a Fairy Tale styled story called Moonflowers (see link in my sig), which isn't based on one specific tale/myth. It's just me having fun with Urban Fantasy and Celtic Mythology for now, but I'll tighten up the plot once the story's done.

That sounds pretty cool! My friend's planning to write a novel in that all those fairy tale people appear, and I might write a sci-fi story based on fairy tales at some point.

My favourite thing about fairy tales is showing people the true face of fairy tales, like the fact that Snow White's mother was forced to put on glowing iron shoes and dance herself to death at Snow White's wedding in the original Grimm version. I have a book with all the original versions, and believe me, you would not read those to your children.

My favourite is Fitcher's Bird

I hate Pinocchio.

I took the book when I was 8 thinking it would be like the disney film version. 'Wrong'

I spent the day crying depressive.

I then learnt my mom bought it to read to my father while he was at the hospital.

Nice way to uplift the sick, mom.

No fairy tale is like the disney version. Most are actually cruel, bloody and/or depressive, and "They lived happily ever after" is by far not the most common way for a fairy tale to end.

Is anyone else writing original/inspired-by/adaptation works?

I've long been knocking around an idea for a sequel to Disney's Snow White that delves into the otherwise unrelated story "Snow-White and Rose-Red." In this version, obviously, the two girls wouldn't be sisters—Rose Red would be the princess of a neighboring kingdom, whose fiancĂ© is missing.

Stuff what I do.

I was thinking about writing a fan made movie script to The Fool of the World and the Flying Ship that's inspired by Rabbit Ears Productions' version of the tale. I'll let everyone know when that is up and running!

I love " The Little Girl Sold with the Pears" from Italo Calvino's collection. I also love " the dragon and the enchanted filly" and " the Great Narbone" from the same.

in non-Italian, I love Beauty and the Beast, the Goose Girl (which has a fantastic adaption by Shannon Hale) and Cinderella.

I'm actually working on an expansion adaption of "The Little girl sold with the pears." It's been my favorite story since I was small. I used to ask for it every night, until my Da told me it didn't exist, I was making it all up, and here, lets read this story instead....

I've loved me dearly some compilations by Keightley and Yates, so very British Isles and Ireland. The Grimms and Andersen have a place in my heart, too. Also, the Child Ballads.

But I've also been trying to expand more Eastward.

So...I'm catching up on The Arabian Nights, right now. I've already read a compilation of Japanese fairy tales by Yei Theodora Ozaki and have the new version of the Night Parade of 100 Demons. Am aiming to write a short story for each entry in the latter.

Yay, Amazon has finally added an entry to my ONLY paperback resource for Asian myths and fairy tales! Water in the Ring of Fire. That's where I learned about the folktale Makala's Crystal Ball (from Thailand, the origin of lightning and thunder) which is my favorite fairy tale.

More modernly, has anyone read Salman Rushdie's "Haroun and the Sea of Stories"?
