The point is that Workout Fanservice is a workout actually shown in a story for the sake of fanservice, not because it serves an actual plot or characterisation purpose. But of course something can serve as fanservice while still also serving a plot purpose - the Basic Instinct flash being a case in point. Heck, most workouts are probably also there to help justify the character being slim and healthy.

I just think that a workout serving a specific plot purpose (e.g. "Distract the guards") is a weaker example of Workout Fanservice than one that's totally gratuitous, because gratuitousness is a big part of the trope. But I'm happy to throw that to the popular vote via crowner...

[up]

How are you getting that from the description? The description clearly states that Workout Fanservice is using a a scene of a character working out as an opportunity to throw in a bunch of fanservice tropes.

It doesn't say anything about the workout itself being the fanservice.

Tag it, would you

By the way, since the first five suggestions weren't sourced, I didn't give them names. If someone could name them, that'd be swell.

The French lady ones I don't personally consider fan service, which is strange... I mean, she has a large bust, but she's doing whatever she wants. I don't care for any of the suggestions with her as the focal point.

It is what it is.

Heh, If you squint a little you can kinda see the purple in her hair. Also, that would be a super OOC for X-23.

Hmm... Looks like Batman is currently in the lead. Which outright baffles me since it's so small and it's certainly no more revealing than the rest of the time, when he's not working out and in his regular costume. If anything, it's even less emphasised.

In contrast, Psyloche's one is blatantly obvious with the final shot so OTT it crosses the trope into comedic territory.

I dunno... Maybe I'm just missing something. Can anyone help explain Batman's appeal?

Personally, I prefer Wayne because I am quite tired of getting semi-naked women shoved into my face. Plus, we've been having problems with very fanservice-y images recently.

Perhaps. But those aren't really good reasons to make such decisions on. I disagree with making this about the meta level situation and instead feel that the images should be selected on an individual basis in isolation of the others and judged based on their respective merits. To do otherwise would be to exercise affirmative action and a Double Standard. You should be picking the best because it is the best.

Even if you do go along those meta lines, then picking "yet another" female image would better reflect the current status of modern media. I don't think it's really TV Tropes' place to be the arbiter of what's right and wrong in media or to censor media; save for when it risks running afoul of certain third parties/advertisers (meaning, self preservation) or threatens to derail a certain subject. Otherwise, I'm afraid we've fallen to the Dark Side.

Well, we have had problems with advertisers over fanservice-y images recently and I dispute that "semi-naked woman" is the only way to bring fanservice across.

Plus, regarding @33, we aren't looking for "most fanservicey depiction of Batman", we are looking for "workout fanservice".

[up] No one's disputing that. What I disagree is that the Batman one one is objectively the best nomination or that we should be picking only male examples (or vastly weighting in favour of them) from here-on-out simply because it has been underrepresented. In that respect, we should stop picking Caucasian examples in favour of Vietnamese, Inuit or Latino examples because they too are severely underrepresented on this site. What I'm saying is that line of reasoning simply doesn't make sense to me.

Personally, I too am tired of the Male Gaze oriented forms of fan service, or even the "Sex Sells" approach to fan service in general. However, that doesn't stop me from acknowledging that the X-Men one is a mighty fine example of this trope in action.

Also, the reason why I bring up Batman's overall fanservicey-ness is because just showing his muscles isn't particularly fan service. They're virtually always on display. Showing them while he's working out is no more Workout Fanservice than showing them while he's eating should be classed as "Eating Fanservice"... Which now that I mention it, should really be a thing. evil grin Okay, back on a more serious note - heavily muscled males are so common in comics that simply showing them is not a particularly strong form of fanservice unless it is particularly gratuitious; which the Batman one is not.

While the site as a whole has run into some problems in the past regarding fanservicey images, they were much, much more gratuitious than the X-Men one, which is quite frankly very sanitised. Frankly, if there are comments that it is too provocative, then something is very, very wrong. And indeed, I don't think anyone here has made such a comment. So, that argument is null.

Just to be clear, I am not overly committed to my vote, but I am not particularly persuaded by your points; they are too much like "other images have this problem too", which is not an argument.

While I like the DiDi images, especially the one with the guy and the tree, my judgement may be affected by the fact that I know she's the comic's resident Ms. Fanservice, so I see any picture with her in as fanservice by default. (The guy and the tree at least emphasise the "distractingly sexy" aspect, though.) Anyway, I've also voted for Batman, because actually that includes male and female fanservice (the woman there is a worse case, really, given her taste in underwear), and the bare chest and the female costume do tip it over the line from "exercise gear" to "fanservice" for me.

(The woman's speech balloon rather hints that she's being Distracted by the Sexy, too.)

And any sensible illustration for a fanservice meme is going to be fanservicey, while any fanservice-looking scene might be justified by the surrounding story, when one finds out what that is. I think we just have to take the best thing we can find and go with it.

Offhand, my suggestion for a caption for that Batman picture, if it's used, would be something like "Of course you have to strip down to boxers or a thong to discuss giant robot mice".

(Who is the woman in that picture, by the way?)

I want to say, "A little fanservice for everyone," but it's really just most people, and even less if you account for specific tastes. Overanalysing stuff can be a drag sometimes...

Whatever's going on with catwoman isn't part of this trope so I'd rather not have a quote that references her, least as far as fanservice.
