Self-Demonstrating Character Pages

Do you think they are bad en masse?

Of course they're not supposed to be nuked. We're supposed to properly go through them, repair any that can be saved, and nuke those that can't.

Although it'd still help to have more clear rules, that way it's easier for the YKTTW process to make proper pages.

The problem with SD character pages is that they completely miss the point of such pages, and seem to think they're just "Character describes themselves in first-person".

The joke with the original Deadpool page is that since Deadpool regularly breaks the fourth wall in his comics, it would make sense for him to also break the fourth wall in his TV Tropes page by "talking" to the reader. SD character pages are supposed to be written in the character's "voice", and the "talking with the reader in first-person" thing was part of Deadpool's "voice". However, breaking the fourth wall by talking with the reader is NOT part of most of these characters' "voice", so it doesn't make sense for them to be doing so in their Self-Demonstrating page.

I am pretty sure that's not the problem with SD character pages. That's a problem. As this is the first time I've heard about it, I would say that it is not most of the problem, or someone would have told me about it before now.

... no, that's a huge part of the problem. That's what we call "boring" SD pages.

In an unrelated note, I have to bring up Captain Falcon again. Discussion stalled earlier, though most people were in favor of cutting despite the absurd number of inbounds.

Here's the Cliff's Notes of the issue:

Pros:

• Most certainly has a unique Voice

Cons:

• Unique voice is completely fanon and injokes
• Many examples are also based on those same injokes.
• A page fitting either of Captain Falcon's canon personalities wouldn't have a unique voice.

Neither pro nor con:

• Over 1000 inbounds. Meaning a cut is unlikely, but it means a shitty page is being seen by a lot of people.

Which sites are providing the inbounds?

Technically, the Captain Falcon page is fanon that's based off of a non-canon portrayal of him (Super Smash Bros.).

It still needs to die in a fire, though.

It's fanfiction, so it should be cut.

But what about the inbounds? Redirect to Super Smash Bros.?

Probably just make it a disambig that links to Smash Bros and F-Zero.

Um, if the content is really popular, maybe it would just be better to move the page to Darth Wiki? Getting rid of popular content does not make much sense unless it somehow makes the rest of the site less popular.

Getting inbounds doesn't necessarily mean it's popular, it could just mean it's pimped, or mocked, or what have you. And again, it's just plain hosting a fanfic.

... and honestly, if for whatever reason it should stay, I'm running a Search+Replace to delete "FALCONE!" That's a stupid joke that doesn't even sound right.

The character page for Mass Effect has Mordin's entry written as self-demonstrating. I'm assuming this isn't allowed, but I'm not familiar enough with Mass Effect to fix the entry myself.

Not in the vanilla namespace, no. It should be moved and replaced.

Guys, i have been thinking, not to sound like a troll or something, but what do you think of programming the pagesthat refer to poorly writing, or derivatives, and the ones like Something Awfull whose names sound like complaints in a way that in 1th April and only 1th April they become self-demostrating? IE the content gets put on giant spoiler tags or gets garbled unless you highlight it making it appear like garbage. It would be one hell of an April Fools prank...

Plus, i think that saying Lost Forever will be never Self-Demostrating is a giant example of Tempting Fate. Need I remind you all of the Giant Crash?

I think that would be a great idea. It would be fun to code, too.

Bumping because the Captain Falcon discussion is petering off again and like last time, the consensus is "it's rubbish, but there are inbounds."

Inbounds do not justify inproper usage. There's literally no reason not to shatter that page with a falcon punch.

Remember, inbounds do matter, but if the trope is being used inproperly, well, that matters even more.

That's my opinion. More eyes seeing something embarrassing is not a good thing.

Popularity does not matter unless the trope is being used correctly. If the trope s being used badly, we do something about that.

Appeal to Popularity is a large fallacy that allows a lot of problems on the Wiki to fester. Quality fixes are necessary.

Keep in mind that Troper Tales were kiiiiiiiiiiiinda the most popularly linked to pages on the site. Which is precisely why we cut them, we don't want people to think of this site as... that.

But popularity may not be the end goal of this site anyway. And if you think quality is more important than popularity, then that is fine.

I just want the site to grow.

More specifically, most Troper Tales were either a major case of TMI/Stupid or a case of Misuse.

Popularity did little because of how bad the tales were. It's exactly the same case here for this namespace. Quality is the problem more than anything.

Wait, if inbounds are the issue, why don't we just erase everything on the SD page and redirect it to, say, VideoGame.F Zero?

Also, why and when did it obtain a YMMV page? I say 12 inbounds is small enough to atleast nuke that if anything.
