I didn't watch CN much during that era, but I'm regretting missing out on Kenny and the Chimp. I busted a gut laughing at that and the episode it was from ("Diseasey Does It"?) when I dug it up on YouTube.

That's actually the only episode that aired, sadly.

Oh. Well that's a bummer. Kenny and the Chimp looks like it would have made a hilarious series if it had been picked up.

You can't really top Salmonella Fitzgerald.

It was probably better off as a one-shot.

I really liked Kenny and the Chimp. You have no idea how often I find myself using the line "Chimps are just not careful."

I think what I really enjoy about that short is that Hotline Guy who helps Kenny with his problem. The dry and very bored tone in his voice implies that he receive these situations on a daily basis. Especially how he seems to have frequent experience with the disease "Selmonella Fitzgerald". Seriously, how many people in real life actually mess around with dangerous diseases?

Also, Swine Flu. It one thing to have a pig face but a pig for a face? Why wasn't this a series back in the 90s . . . oh right, the Off-Beats.

2125: Well, then it probably wouldn't have lasted.

Most of the mini-series within the shows never lasted long, except for I Am Weasel - and probably with good reason, as that was the best of the bunch.

All I have to say about I am Weasel is that it was better than Cow and Chicken.

Honestly, that Kenny and the Chimp short is immensely quotable.

"MAN, LOOK AT THAT BACON SIZZLE"

And I totally didn't get that Salmonella Fitzgerald joke as a kid. Now I can look at it and think, "oh wow, that singer nailed Ella's voice."

That is, in fact, Candi Milo.

Basically back in the day, Cartoon Network used to air the pilots of various cartoons to see which ones the general viewing audience responded to best. Both KND and Billy and Mandy got picked up that way.

Before that, they had What A Cartoon! Show, where different artists got to flex their creative muscles, and the more popular shorts got their own series.

Now they just air whatever pilots they receive online.

But anyway, I remember when Cartoon Network used to annually (admittedly I think only for 2 years) do those Big Pick Weekend special events, where they aired a bunch of pilots and had the viewing audience vote online for which one they wanted developed into a full series. I do need to wonder how much influence the viewing audience actually had on the decision for which series they'd pick up, versus whatever the execs saw more franchising potential in (and at least one of the two—Grim And Evil, more so the Billy and Mandy half—certainly got that treatment, while the other one—KND—at least had a halfhearted attempt at it, though I certainly feel like they could've merchandised the hell out of it).

I actually went and watched some of those "Big Pick" pilots a few months ago after watching gameplay of some party game featuring CN characters from the time. Some of them were pretty bananas.

Heck, the main character of one was a sentient cactus. Ironically, that one I felt had some potential. I mean, the pilot wasn't perfect, but I felt building upon and explaining the madcap setting and characters could have been worth exploring. (Such as how that kid wound up with a living cactus for a sister in the first place.)

Incidentally, Chris Savino had a pilot for the Big Pick: "Foe Paws". The resemblance of the character designs to those of his newest show The Loud House is uncanny.

It should be, considering the style...but not very surprising.

[up][up] Funny. The Cactus Pilot was the one I picked as a kid. For the second one I chose the one with the furries that deals with the latest technological advancement known as cell phones; man I was ahead of my time as a kid to choose that short. Nobody would of guess that cartoons nowadays will be more slice of life like with talking animals and that cell phones will be a common thing people used in life instead of a one-note fad.

I feel like Kitty Bobo could've been a sorta proto-Regular Show, but I honestly don't remember the pilot being engaging enough to really capture what it possibly could've been. The character designs and animation was cool, but there wasn't much beyond that.

[up][up] I remember that was the one I actually voted for back in the day. Kind of funny it was sort of ahead of it's time by like a decade.

It'd fit right in with the type of cartoons CN greenlights now.

I looked up the creators of Kitty Bobo and it looks like they don't have much on their animation resume at all. The writer and artist has done next to nothing period in the entertainment industry, and the director seems to have mostly worked on a very small handful of Cartoon Network show episodes (including the post-revival Dexter's Lab episodes), three episodes of The Critic...

...oh yeah, and he also directed this bizarre, awful shortnote :

Lauren Faust was involved in this, you guys.

EDIT: Looks like it had a sequel too. Except the sequel is waaaaaay better. Directed by someone else too. Maybe this guy just sucks.
