Pacfic Rim. No contest. Edge is fun and clever, but it's basically the Peggy Sue genre distilled to absolute perfection. It's still kinda narrow. But watching Tom Cruise play a handsome coward and a Butt-Monkey is a joy for the eyes. And the monsters were magnificent, they were like pure little storms of violence. They really get the fight-or-flight instincts going.
But Pacific Rim is so much more... everything. It's not just one clever idea, it's a boatload of them.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.My brother refuses to watch it simply because it has Tom Cruise in it.
That is the face of a man who just ate a kitten. Raw.He's missing out. One of the best movies from the summer.
Same for my girlfriend. Tom Cruise was perfect, though. The perfect mix of Jerkass Woobie, of blatantly fake charisma and genuine caring. It takes balls ta play an outright coward.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.Did you mention that Tom Cruise dies in it? A lot?
Oh, right. That's worth a try XD
That is the face of a man who just ate a kitten. Raw.Yeah, look at my post on the Guardians of the Galaxy forum thread about how I would've advertised this film.
I seriously think that Tom Cruise is one heck of an under appreciated actor nowadays. Just cause he supports The Church Of Happyology doesn't make him a bad actor.
Also, I feel that his performances in sci-fi are his best. His roles in Vanilla Sky, Minority Report, War Of The Worlds 2005, Oblivion 2013, and of course this film are show some of his finest acting imo. Heck, I feel his role in EOT is his best role yet.
Now if only they could get him to play Levi should a live-action Attack On Titan film get made.
I don't know, I think his best was probably A Few Good Men, but then anyone who can go face-to-face with Jack Nicholson and hold his own gets elevated a few points there.
Of course, don't you know anything about ALCHEMY?!- Twin clones of Ivan the GreatDarkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
Knight and Day was good as well, but mainly because he embraced the state of Tom Cruise Crazy.
Still say his performance in Tropic Thunder was his best.
Have you seen Edge of Tomorrow yet?
That said, it's a lot easier to ignore the matter and just enjoy his movies when he's not going around jumping up and down on couches and generally acting like a crazy person while being one its biggest spokespeople.

What, that is what you blame him for? That was Charlie Sheen-grade hilarious. Seriously, being insane is perfectly okay for an actor, as long as they're functional at acting. Heck, it's almost expected.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.I probably phrased that wrong.
No, I don't blame him for that per say, but it's the signature bit from the height of his role as one of the most recognizable faces of Scientology when Scientology was at the height of its public infamy and getting scrutinized the most.
Except he never actually jumped up and down on the sofa.
With cannon shot and gun blast smash the alien. With laser beam and searing plasma scatter the alien to the stars.Saw it twice in theaters.
Crazy!Cruise was almost a decade ago though.

Yeah, I know. Which is why it's been far easier to go and enjoy the movies he's been making more recently.
He really is a good actor when he's got the right part, and as I think it was mentioned at one point it's surprising to think about just how many Sci-fi movies he's done over his career, especially when he's not really the kind of guy who immediately comes to mind when you think "Science Fiction Actor".
The more I look back on Edge, the more I think that it is Tom Cruise's best film. It's certainly his most generous towards his co-star. If anything Emily Blunt has got more work to do and has more agency for a lot of the film than Tom has.
The film should have more of an audience in home formats.
I don't know, Cruise has been in some pretty memorable movies (such as a Few Good Men) along his career. But I will say my personal favorite of his is The Last Samurai, which holds the remarkable honor of being one of the few movies I can overlook the atrocious historical inaccuracy due the well-done story and acting.
Edge of Tomorrow is pretty up there, though.
"All you Fascists bound to lose."I gotta say, this is probably my favorite mash-up with this film:
That got a live tear out of me...
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.Ok finally got to see this.
This is a good sci-fi action flick. Clever, good action, cool sci-fi gear, and the aliens are actually kinda scary. They are like horrifying and violent tumble weeds blown out of the gates of hell.

Who watches the watchmen?
Told ya it was as good as Pacific Rim.
Which do you like more for that matter?
