I think Gina had her good qualities, but much of her personality was acting aloof or indifferent to most of the precinct and often inappropriate when does does show interest in them. Other than her and Peralta it felt like her interactions with the rest of the cast was for the express purpose of trying to prove she has a purpose on the show rather than just showing her purpose on the show on a regular basis.

I honestly find Boyle more annoying than Gina was. Boyle is basically one joke that's been repeated without much deviation since the very beginning of the series, and even though things about his life has changed, he's still very noticeably one of the only main characters who hasn't grown or changed as a character in any significant way.

I thought the problem with Gina is that she ends up being a lot more meanspirited than the general mood of the B99 heroes. Gina's most recurring joke is just that she's a comically egotistical and caustic person who does practically everything for self-serving reasons and who often enjoys putting people down to make herself feel better. She sounds a lot of the time like a character out of Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia timemorphed into B99, where the main cast is largely a lot more friendly and warm-hearted.

Granted I think I soured on her from the word "go" by the way that Gina sexually harassing Terry in the workplace very blatantly and very aggressively just slid by and went essentially unaddressed.

What? There's more than one joke to him. His jealousy of everyone close to Jake, his obsession with (sometimes weird) food, his accidental innuendos, his feminine side, the fact that he considers himself prettier than Terry....

[up] And stronger than Terry. And he's occasionally proven right on that one.

Most of Boyle's jokes boil down to either "Boyle is embarrassed" or "Boyle should be embarrassed but doesn't accept it," which I can admit can make them feel a bit samey. Still, I think he's got enough variance to stay an interesting secondary character.

Yeah, I very much agree that Gina feels too meanspirited. She also gets away with it, and eventually ends up being rewarded for her behaviour. It just doesn't work.

I think my problem with Gina, personally, is that, while she does have very funny moments and funny lines, she's so meanspirited that it's genuinely odd to me why anyone in the precinct even are friends with her, or are even nice to her. There are characters that I love that I'd consider fairly similar to Gina, but the difference is that the reactions they get for their abrasive and egotistical behavior feels a lot more... realistic, I guess? It's just bizarre to me that, for instance, Boyle and Amy, Gina's frequent targets, would genuinely consider her a friend and even want to hang out with her.

Well. I guess it's not weird for Boyle. But it feels fairly strange for Amy.

I honestly didn't have too much trouble with Gina being mean.

I only had a problem that she got away with them all.

I don't know if it's just me but I feel like the characters do often act very over-the-top since they are in a comedy show and often some of the characters act very extreme.

First ep didn't really work for me. I liked Charles being on brand with his clumsy attempts at being racially sensitive, the callback to Terrys Hitchcocks sex book and the way Rosa casually announces that she quit, very in character. However, this one did not find the right balance between the serious and comical plots.

The second one on the other hand was the opposite. Jakes scheme strategem, high Rosa, and of course Charles' accidental innuendos. And it ended on a hopeful note.

So I heard Diaz quit, in the show? Is Stephanie Beatriz leaving in real life or will it be like the arc where Holt was Kicked Upstairs, where the actor was still around, just not with the squad?

Yeeah, this thing should not have come back. The whole show just feels super tired, which is such a shame. Granted, I was thinking that the last season as well. Even the reaction to the recent spotlight on policing aren't bringing anything new and I'm not sure how I feel about how they're tackling the subject.

Both the second and the fourth episode were so boring I stopped watching them half way through and had to come back later when the ambient boredom level surpassed the episode's. I think I'll give this one more episode and then drop it, assuming no grand change.

I get why it almost never happens, but this is kinda why I wish series like these just had a set arc from the get go and thus the writers could work towards an ending. This would give them a chance to make the whole structure more focused and shows would end before they run out their welcome. It's minor torture to watch something that once was great shambling forward a mere shadow of itself.

Lets hope the creators and actors of the show take a deserved break and then come up with fresh and new projects that surpass B99.

I... could not get through 8x01. Trying to mine comedy out of the reactions to the Floyd protests from police characters, no matter how otherwise lovable, was a little too much.

I might try again if only for the residual goodwill.

Genuinely cannot tell if Stephanie Beatriz's natural voice just sounds that much like Melissa Fumero's voice or if that was just a really amazing impression of Melissa's voice that Stephanie did as Rosa. Either way, that was uncanny.

I enjoyed the Rosa-Amy switcheroo and all their drunk shenanigans and I liked how that episode actually did deconstruct the Jake's Cowboy Cop tendencies. But with the Doug Judy episode, while I love Doug Judy episodes, and I've always enjoyed him as a character, I was a little irritated that none of the other characters other than Jake got to have more than a few minutes of screentime each. Kinda irritating since it's the last season.

Been watching through the season bit by bit online (at nbc.com, no worries), and it's been pretty good so far.

The first episode was pretty much what I'd expected. Jake being uncomfortable about a narrative in which the cops weren't the good guys. Boyle making the other characters (and the audience) uncomfortable on the subject of race. Etc. It was a sluggish start - funny but undeniably awkward - but one that had to happen.

I'm also loving O'Sullivan and the Police Union as the Big Bads of this season. That's maybe the best move the show has made regarding the RL issues with cops. Though since our heroes in this show tend not to necessarily win against their Big Bads it doesn't bode well.

The rest of the season has been pretty great thus far. I just got finished with the Doug Judy episode. It was great and a good send-off to the character (I really like the book ends of Jake being doggedly after Judy at the start of the series, and in the end helping him escape at the end), though I admit I miss the time when Doug was Jake's super-friendly archenemy vs his super-duplicitous best buddy, and I have for the last few seasons. The relationship is very similar, but the big difference is obvious in this one: Jake is super easy to fool now, and so the back and forth between them that made it so fun at first only really comes in towards the end when Jake realizes too late that he's being fooled.

So, the series ended on an epic heist, full of the usual double crosses and Gambit Pileups. There were some fun twists and cameo appearances, plenty of Call Backs, and yes, Gina returns, but the biggest reveal of them all was that Jake quit the police force to focus on being a good father. All in all, a great send off to the Nine-Nine.

That was a really good finale. I'm glad this show had such a solid ending. I loved all the callbacks (the cutting-back-to-the-intro gag has to be my favorite) and emotional beats. I'm also really glad that the finale makes it clear that the squad is gonna still stay in each others' lives even if their arcs have taken them in different directions.

I'm gonna miss this show.
