So Stupidity Tropes was made to contain both contrived and non-contrived stupidity.
That seems to defeat the purpose of Contrived Stupidity Tropes.
There's nothing wrong with a sub-index. Animal Tropes has quite a few. In this case though I don't see how you draw a clear line between contrived and non-contrived.
Contrived means, "deliberately caused," in this context on the part of the writers.
The definitions of the indexes are:
- Contrived Stupidity Tropes: Plot requires characters to do stupid things.
- Stupidity Tropes: Tropes related to stupidity, absentmindedness, and forgetfulness.
That seems like a clean distinction. I have to ask, how many entries on Stupidity Tropes aren't also on the other index?
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanEasier question is how many tropes are on the Contrived Stupidity Index that shouldn't be there. I think it's a lot.
Rhymes with "Protracted."I suspect there's some holdover from before Stupidity Tropes was created. It happens a lot in cases like this.
Clock is set.
All right, looking in that old thread, it seems that Contrived Stupidity Tropes was put up because the tropes were not contrived and a separate index was created, but the misuse tropes were not removed. What to do?
Remove the misuse tropes, I suppose.
Rhymes with "Protracted."Since the clock's up and nothing was apparently done, I'd say lock up.
This index has almost every page on Stupidity Tropes. There are only four tropes that are not also indexed there (Clutching Hand Trap, Cutscene Incompetence, Hand in the Hole, and Running into the Window). Stupidity Tropes is the larger index.
While the description says this is a list of tropes of stupidity that are used to drive the plot, very few tropes actually support that definition. It seems that the "contrived" is interpreted as allowance to complain about stupidity over very obvious things.
I suggest merging this under Stupidity Tropes. If anything can be saved, rename to something else and restrict this to examples of stupidity driving the plot.
