When all you have is a blowtorch...

Basically, I'm wondering if there's anyone else out there that has a song that they really love yet really hate at the same time.

Right now, I have a love/hate relationship with Bruno Mars' "Gorillas." I adore the sort of throw back-ness of the tune, LOVE the way he sings it, but...seriously, couldn't he have chosen a different topic? The lyrics feel so off with the song (not even in that awesome way of usual lyrical dissonance) that it always pulls me out from fully enjoying it.

Anyone else feel that way about a song? You either like the song but hate the lyrics or like the lyrics but hate the tune that's been paired with it.

"Yo, those kids are straight up liars, man. All I told them to do was run product. And by product, I mean chewing gum."

Many songs written by Casey Beathard tend to have ridiculously limited melodies that consist of the same three notes. For instance, "Just Fishin'" by Trace Adkins has great lyrics IMO, but I just can't get over the fact that the intro is so unmemorable, and that 90% of the song is a D-sharp.

And I've never had any problem with the sound of Lonestar's "My Front Porch Looking In" other than the fact that Richie McDonald oversings it a bit, but the lyrics are loaded with Narm such as "There's a carrot top who can barely walk, with a sippy cup of milk / A blue-eyed blonde with shoes on wrong 'cause she likes to dress herself". Which is a shame, because I think the title is actually a good hook.

"What Is This Note?" by Eels used to be an example, but then I gradually gained appreciation for the music via Fridge Brilliance. To start with, read these lyrics, then try to imagine what kind of music would go with them. The answer is probably the exact opposite of this. For a long time I wondered why these sweet love song lyrics were set to ugly Noise Rock (which isn't even a typical style for the band). I started liking it a little more when I decided it was an inversion of how E usually uses Lyrical Dissonance - it's rare to hear an Eels song with lyrical content that's actually happier than the music lets on. Then I finally got it when I realized the mood of the music isn't meant to be angry, just jittery and hyperactive - it's basically supposed to capture the feel of being so in love with someone that you have all this excess excitement you can't hold in.

I also think "I'm Not A Loser" by Descendents is a fine bit of Hardcore Punk teen angst up until the sudden homophobia of the final verse (featuring lyrics like "Your pants are too tight / you fucking homos" and "You suck, mister buttfuck, you don't belong here"). Though I was glad to learn that the verse in question is at least considered Old Shame by the band themselves.

Spanish band Mago de Oz's Fiesta Pagana (Pagan Party). It's an excellent song, musically, but the lyrics are violently anti-Catholic. Being one myself, that doesn't fly with me.

As for The Eels, it just sounds like a much more ABRASIVE way to record something a-la "A Hard Day's Night" to me... I think they could've turned down the noiseness quite a bit musically, but it's an interesting combination.

I enjoy some songs by the Russian darkwave band "Otto Dix", but the lyrics tend to somehow manage to combine "pandering" and "pretentious". The voice can also be quite irritating by trying to be operatic but not quite getting there.
