This thread is for ideas, theories, or general speculation about what [your favorite manga] would be like if it were marked in the Seinen category of manga.

Seinen is basically manga for adults, and rather than copy and paste information from Wikipedia, I've provided you a link there so you can check it out for yourself.

There are plenty of manga out there that would arguably be better if they were part of the Seinen genre. Others would be worse, and some would be comically violent or depressing.

What mangas do you think would improve/fail if they written for Seinen audiences? How far do you think they would make it?

Akira Toriyama (April 5 1955 - March 1, 2024).

If Natsume Yuujinchou were seinen...it would be about Natsume Reiko, her battles with various youkai without giving a damn if the techniques she used were forbidden, her status as a social pariah, and her relationship with Hinoe. It could work, but it wouldn't be heartwarming like the original.

Cardcaptor Sakura may give its characters more flaws and inner conflict and probably give Sakura and her friends age-ups to at least teenagers (which would make Touya and Yukiko working adults).

Hataraku Maousama would have Maou actually be pretty evil, and play the whole situation for Black Comedy without getting too gruesome or vulgar.

But really, Chis Sweet Home and Yotsubato are also seinen. Anything can be seinen if the author says it is. It has many forms.

Loves feel-good animation a whole lot.

On the Seinen page, there's a list of "Series sometimes mistaken for seinen," most of which are bleak, violent, and/or horrifying. (There are similar lists on the Shōjo Demographic and Josei pages.)

I'm not sure if One Piece would benefit if it were in a seinen magazine. It takes place in a World of Ham in which comedy, drama, and combat can all coexist.

Likewise, quite a bit of Hayate The Combat Butler is episodic comedy. It has a serious story arc from time to time, but most of the series shouldn't be played for drama or fanservice.

I believe FOFD was implying that making a Darker and Edgier (or Hotter and Sexier) version of a series can sometimes work well, and sometimes fail. For instance, there are moments in Cardcaptor Sakura in which it seems the heroine is working to avoid an apocalypse. If that end-of-the-world scenario actually happened, the series would lose some of its strengths.
