[up] The Walt Disney and Minnie thing was before it was revived, by the way.

South Park apparently did an episode that was incredibly offensive to transgender people.

[up] Mr. Garrison's Fancy New Vagina?

I remember at one point someone told Mr. Garrison something along the lines of, "You're not a woman, you're just a man with a mutilated penis."

So, yeah, incredibly transphobic by today's standards, but in their defense it was made before trans issues really started hitting the mainstream.

How they portray gays and trans people (Ida, Jasper, and Peter in "Family Gay" were all camp gays/trans, which is stereotypical)

South Park said without a hint of irony that trans women are nothing more than men with mutilated genitals. That is FAR more offensive. As for the gay characters, SP has three: Mr. Garrison, Big Gay Al, and Mr. Slave. Talk about stereotypes. That being said, both FG and SP make fun of the stereotypes themselves. I wish more people would understand that.

Made SEVERAL disrespectful cutaways

Eh, YMMV. The writers love to make fun of things that they themselves are fans of.

Meg's abuse itself can be a big reason as to why FG gets a lot of bile

Butters is basically the Meg of South Park.

Don't get me wrong, I am a fan of South Park. However, I'm sick of people bashing FG for things that SP and other shows are just as guilty of doing.

[up] As I said, it was offensive even then.

Note that while The Simpsons has done cutaways like Peter Griffin being accused of "plagiarismo" (and Stan Smith of "plagiarismo di plagiarismo") Groening and Mac Farlane are apparently friends in real life.

I'm pretty sure that was incredibly transphobic even then.

I'll take your word for it, but I don't remember anyone making too much of a fuss about it when it was first aired. Hell, I think Bloody Mary garnered more controversy.

Note that while The Simpsons has done cutaways like Peter Griffin being accused of "plagiarismo" (and Stan Smith of "plagiarismo di plagiarismo") Groening and Mac Farlane are apparently friends in real life.

Even after the scene where Quagmire boned Marge and then murdered her family? I heard that Matt got legit pissed about that scene.

On a side note, I wouldn't mind the portrayal of gay people on shows like FG and SP as much if they didn't try to mix it with serious social commentary about LGBT rights. It's part of the reason why 'Family Gay' was so cringeworthy.

If you're going to say that gays are people too, then you have to portray them as... well... actual people. Jasper has no character outside of being a gay male stereotype. Neither does Big Gay Al, as far as I know. Mr. Slave did show some Hidden Depths in the Paris Hilton episode (his speech at the end was a Crowning Moment Of Awesome, in my opinion) but that's all I can think of.

[down]He had a brief cameo in Brian's Play, but that's it.

[up] Well, transgender people weren't quite as big a cause as gay people at the time. Undoubtedly any transgender people who saw this episode were probably offended, though.

Mac Farlane later sang the opening theme to "Into the Wild Green Yonder" so I think they made up.

And that, I think, is why Jasper has not appeared since that episode.

Yeah, I forgot about that South Park episode.

Simpsons, to my knowledge, does not use cutaways as often as Family Guy does. It they do, it's usually the Couch Gags, not the actual episodes. (though there was the ending of Dark Knight Court that parodied Avengers and Dark Knight Rises, which was a cutaway)

@ Redhed Yeah those disrespectful cutaways featuring other cartoon characters (furthermore, why does FG use other cartoon characters for jokes?) are YMMV, but they still have the ability to piss people off.

[up][up] This is what Homer's Phobia for Simpsons did right. John was not a gay male stereotype and it did have social commentary.

[up] John was pretty much a caricature of John Waters, so he had a lot of the man's personality in there too.

Man! Who knew a thread about a crossover would turn into a discussion about the portrayals of gays and trans in cartoons. This place is weird lol

Yeah those disrespectful cutaways featuring other cartoon characters (furthermore, why does FG use other cartoon characters for jokes?) are YMMV, but they still have the ability to piss people off.[

Cartoons, live action TV, movies, books, plays, video games, real people... EVERYTHING is poked fun at and many of the butts of these jokes are things that the writers are fans of. I think the real problem is that people don't know how to laugh at themselves or the things that they enjoy.

Or people can't take criticism about their favored style of humor.

Jokes, especially of the mean spirited variety, don't HAVE TO be accepted if you don't want to take them. If you think someone or something is being of bad taste with their humor, you're perfectly entitled to voice your displeasure with it. And please don't fall back into the old 'But other shows aren't criticized as much as Seth's are!' because at this point it's just become your automatic defense mechanism, and you pretty much are falling into a dual strategy of asking others to find that brand of humor to be good (and implying there's something wrong with THEM if they don't, which I find quite offensive in an underhanded way) and trying to shift the 'blame', if there is one at all, on a whole genre or style of animation instead of making a good concrete case for the criticized shows on themselves.

As I said several times before, my problem with these boards was that Family Guy is an Acceptable Target. Sponge Bob too, and that show was never even on my radar before I noticed all of the hate it got on the forums, so at least you can't accuse me of selective outrage and hyperfocusing only on the things that I like. However, people have pointed out to me that there are a few other shows that get that amount of bile spewed in their direction. I just never noticed because they aren't discussed as often outside of their own threads compared to FG and SB. I meant what I said in that previous post. I was incorrect and I admit it, so I'm no longer bringing up FG's disproportionate amount of hate unless it's relevant.

Or people can't take criticism about their favored style of humor.

I can. I am not implying at all that people need to accept that brand of humor. I respect that everybody has different tastes. My problem lies with the people who continue to watch, despite being continually offended. Why waste your time on a show that distresses you so much?

I don't think I'm being unfair when I rightfully point out that everything is made fun of on the show. Why should people focus on the things that offend THEM only? Anybody who laughed at the butts of jokes and suddenly got offended when something THEY liked or a group THEY'RE a part of got made fun of might want to take a good, hard look at themselves. That's my other major beef. "That joke about the screaming black dolphins sure was funny! But wait, they just sang a song making fun of white people! I'M WHITE! THIS TIME THEY'VE GONE TOO FAR!"

A person with the ability to laugh at oneself and the things they enjoy is someone I admire. Anybody who lacks that trait shouldn't be watching equal-opportunity offending shows like this in the first place.

Ah, so we have arrived to the old fork trap where you can't complain about a certain offensive thing because either you don't watch it regularly and so you 'don't know what are you talking about' or you watch it and then the counter argument becomes 'you keep watching it anyway, so why do you complain?'

Let's be honest here, if you say you don't watch a show because you hate it, and you know what exactly went on in one of the latest episodes and are complaining about it, as some people have done, you either are:

  • Getting your information from somewhere else,
  • Tuning in randomly and watching anyway,
  • An Internet reviewer, or
  • Still watching the show despite the fact you hate it.

If it's the latter, one has to wonder why. There's other things you can do with your life, after all.

Pretty much. It's an unfortunate but understandable dilemma.

[up] Neither The Simpsons nor Family Guy has ever been at Bile Fascination levels.

That's reserved for stuff like The Room or Batman And Robin.
